Leading lawmaker dismisses US scholars' upbeat report on Iraq Jul 31 01:18 PM US/Eastern
A top Democratic lawmaker Tuesday dismissed the findings of two longtime Iraq war critics, who cited a dramatic improvement in the situation there following the infusion of thousands of additional US troops.
"I dismiss it at as rhetoric," said US Representative John Murtha, a former marine, congressional heavyweight on military matters, and outspoken Iraq War critic.
"I don't know where they were staying. I don't know what they saw. But I know this: that it's not getting better," Murtha said on CNN television.
"It's over-optimist. It's an illusion," the Pennsylvania lawmaker continued.
Independent Brookings Institution analysts Michael O'Hanlon and Kenneth Pollack, who often have criticized US Iraq policy, on Monday said they noted a marked improvement on their last visit earlier this month to the war-torn country.
Pollack and O'Hanlon returned from eight days of meetings with US generals, diplomats and Iraqis saying they were more hopeful than they had expected.
"We saw considerably greater progress on the security side than I would have expected," Pollack said at a press conference Monday, adding that economic and political strides were evident at local levels.
The two scholars warned however that on the national level, the Iraqi government was making "zero" progress.
Their analysis came around seven weeks before a crucial report is due to be delivered on the surge by US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, which is being seen as a crucial moment for US policy in Iraq.

They report that House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) says a strongly positive statement progress in Iraq by General Petraeus likely would split Democrats in the House and impede his party’s efforts to press for a timetable to end the war.”
“According to Clyburn, Petraeus carries significant weight among the 47 members of the Blue Dog caucus in the House (i.e., the less than liberal Democrats). Sadly, it’s not clear that Petraeus carries as much weight with moderate and liberal Republicans.”
“As significant as what Clyburn said is the way he said it. According to Clyburn, a strongly positive report by Petraeus would be “a real big problem for us.” Clyburn’s candor may be commendable, but it’s unfortunate that the Dems regard strongly positive news from Iraq as a problem.”

I`m not persuaded the tide has turned yet, either. But since the donk party is so heavily vested in our defeat, I can see why they would consider any positive news as a problem, and will dismiss out of hand anything positive Petraeus has to say.

The same goes with Jim Webb....in his face off with Lindsay Graham, he admitted that he had not been to Iraq...while Graham has been there 7 times. Both Murtha and Webb don’t want to talk to soldiers there because they are afraid of what they will hear. Better to stay put and put their hands over their eyes and ears...while they continue to shout out the same treason over and over again.

Frankly, I think those on the right are desparate for good news/polls and the left for bad news/polls. I’d rather be hoping for the best than for bad news for America, so I guess I’ll never be a dem/lib.

And, in a related development, Murtha was one of nine Congressmen who voted AGAINST increasing ethical standards in the Congress, especially regarding "earmarks".
Thus, in addition to being an asshole, he is also corrupt.

Sad to say that wishing him to Iraq is just wishing more work on the fluff and buff's. He would only be waiting on as he swills coffee in the green zone never listening to anything that could cause him a problem such as progress on the ground. The man has sold his honor for political gain. We can only hope that history remembers him for what he is doing.
