WASHINGTON New signs are posted around the White House indicating a new strict enforcement of the dress code, the Washington Post reported Thursday. The code applies to all visitors and staff members, including tourists.
Some tourists are finding the strict clothing restrictions at the White House un-American.
The forbidden items include jeans, sneakers, mini-skirts, t-shirts, tank tops and absolutely no flip flops.
The motivation for the clothing crack-down comes from the Bush Administration who think some of those who work there and those who visit just don't dress appropriately.
Personally I don’t have a problem with the levi’s as long as they are not ratty.
Not the president’s house; public’s house. President’s house in Texas.
Has this been verified? I mean, this is from See BS.
I went to the WH website and saw what was prohibited - pointed objects, video cameras etc., nothing about jeans, t-shirts etal.
In fact, the part they seem to be talking about is the public part of the building, not the private residence, or the office building, where dress codes are acceptable.
This is not a particular President's house. It's the house they live in while serving. The President = the office, not the man.
Right .... try to get into the Oval Office without an appointment.
I think setting the dress code for visiting the President's house is a GREAT idea. Let's bring back some decorum and dignitas to the White House.
Everywhere in America.
Especially the bedroom.
You have too much respect for the clowns that get elected into the office. And you have too much respect for the office; it makes you vulnerable.

As I read this thread I think of old movies and photos showing people at baseball games, men wearing coat and tie, or old Groucho Marx shows, and the audience all dressed nicely (except that everyone seemed to wear only black, white and grey clothes back then...lol).
Fast forward to today and it really is disappointing. People, especially young people, including my own, don’t see the importance of dressing with some degree of decorum, or else they have lost the sense of what decorum is. I am only 49 years old (won’t be able to say “only” much longer), but I have a hard time going to church without a suit on, or at a minimum a shirt and tie. It isn’t that God demands it; rather, I think of it is as honoring God with the best I have, including presenting myself as well as I can to be in His house. I don’t look down on others who may not be fortunate enough to own a suit, and I don’t demand of my children that they dress as I do, although I do appreciate them making an effort to try and look nice.
As for the White House, the new dress code is probably a reaction to the utter degradation of any sense of decorum these days. Jeans and sneakers would be acceptable, until you see torn, sagging jeans with holes that ought to be covering butt cheeks and upper thighs, with crotches riding around the knees, t-shirts with sayings printed on them that in former years would have nearly started a riot. Flip flops slapping only slightly louder than the chewing gum popping in slack jawed, uncombed heads.
The reaction to all this was probably excessive, but it is understandable, at least to me. Yes, the White House is owned by the people. So is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but an argument that anyone ought to be able to march beside the guard wearing shorts and a baseball cap calling 1-2-3-4 is so distasteful that the argument defeats itself.
If I knew in advance that a visit to the White House required business attire I would see to it that I was prepared for that.
Very well said!
I wasn’t talking about going to the Oval Office. That SHOULD have a dress code. I was talking about tourists taking tours.
It really makes a difference.
Agreed - spend some time in a shopping mall just watching people go by! Americans look like trailer trash walking around, not caring how they look, what they say, or how they act! It’s not just about dress code, ever see how badly behaved children are now? How about some grown ups too? I personally think that the PR dept could have phrased this in a less “dictatorial” frame, but understand and appreciate that the purpose is to dignify a national treasure. They’re not asking for gowns and tuxes here!
If people who visit the WH can’t show even the slightest amount of respect for the Building they shouldn’t go. President Reagan would never enter the Oval Office w/o a suit jacket due to his respect. Too bad that is lost on today’s visitors.
Pray for W and Our Troops
Very Good Laz.
LOL
(snicker)
You’re right, they could have phrased it a little better but like you say, they’re not asking for anything unreasonable. A person can still dress casually, be comfortable and meet the dress code. The talk of slippery slope, the sky is falling and I always dress in shorts and T shirt are lame excuses, IMO.
Good to see you again, hope all’s well with you and yours.
It's not about respecting the clowns, it's about paying respect for the traditions and culture if the USA.
Vulnerable? Not even close. It's about having dignitas, gravitas and decorum.
Would you show up for a wedding or go into church in shorts and a T-shirt? Show at least that minimum level of respect when you visit the White House.
Then the tourists can stop acting like peasants and the vulgar mob and show a little respect to the White House and the historical significance of the location.
Yep, they had a civilization that lasted from 510 BC (Birth of the Republic) until 476AD for the Western Roman Empire and lasted until 1453AD in the East.
2000 years of civilization that conquered the best parts of the known world.
Our own civilization is descended from theirs. You have a problem with the Romans?
Do you really think that America in it's present state will survive another 100 years let alone 1000?
We need more aspects of Roman culture brought back if we are to survive the barbarians.
I can't understand why people are so bent out of shape over this. If there is a dress code you just follow it. We were wearing capris, sandals and knit tops (not T's) and we would have been fine. That is the way I dress when I travel all the time. Big Deal!!
I am glad Bush is setting a high standard.
