Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Thursday, July 26, called on rival Tom Tancredo to stop airing a "blatantly dishonest" campaign ad in Iowa that accuses Huckabee of favoring amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Huckabee said Tancredo either did sloppy research or purposefully mischaracterized his position.
"When people engage in a completely false attack, it's usually an act of desperation. To me, it's a badge of honor because he sees that we are reaching the people we are trying to reach," Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, said.
Tancredo campaign spokeswoman Bay Buchanan said the ad would not be pulled and insisted it was accurate. She said Huckabee supported a plan by Bush that would have allowed illegal immigrants to earn the right to stay in the United States, and that Huckabee refused to sign a pledge opposing amnesty.
"All indications are that Huckabee supports amnesty. He's a pro-amnesty politician who is in denial. There are a lot of pro-amnesty politicians in denial," she said.
The radio ad calls Mitt Romney a flip-flopper on abortion, amnesty and gun control, then attacks Sam Brownback, Fred Thompson and Huckabee, claiming "they're all for amnesty."
Huckabee said his first priority is to make the U.S. border secure, then require illegal immigrants to pay restitution for breaking the law.
Huckabee's campaign manager Chip Saltsman said that the ad "clearly distorts Mike Huckabee's conservative record on amnesty" and should be pulled.

We have made the world much freer. And we have pumped billions of dollars into lots of countries to improve their economies. So I think the United States, more than any nation in the world, has a right to tell folks, you folks stay in your own country, make it work and when you want to come into America *knock on the front door*.
I don’t think Huckabee will even carry Arkansas. I’ll do my best to make sure he doesn’t anyway.

your correct. i think a lot of people let w off the hook. he is the big pusher for the bill. he made a trip to penn this past week and had arlen specter with him. conclusion, arlen has a new plan to pass the amnesty bill. change a couple of words (z visa to green cards) and he thinks he has the votes to pass. w must have been in glee.
green card = z visa. changing the name does not change what it is, an amnesty bill. double speak. i hate to be negavtive but my “mike chertoff” is the bill will get passed.
That's the thing about Tancredo. He's targeting all the candidates who are soft on immigration, as he should.
The trouble is though, all of the GOP presidential candidates with the exception of Rudy, Huck, and Brownback supports border security. And these three are already written off by conservatives. Tancredo needs to distinguish himself from Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter, the other low tier candidates, rather than wasting money on Huck or Brownback, whom conservatives aren't going to support anyway. And there 's no way in Hell Tancredo can call Paul or Hunter soft on border security.
He needs to talk about the other issues. He's not going to win by being a one-issue candidate.

Bay Buchanan should not be underestimated in grassroots politics by any means. Tancredo could be THE surprise of next weeks Straw Poll.
hey Rachel! I have met Bay Buchanan. I have a couple of pictures of us together! She is a great lady! I would love to see a Hunter/Tancredo ticket. Just wish that Hunter had her on his campaign. I worked hard for her brother in his campaign.
Maybe Hunter could be a VP for Tancredo... I am 1000% convinced that he will do better than Hunter in the straw poll because of the organizational issues.

What about Fred Thompson? Fred discussed his views on illegal immigration as a sub for Paul Harvey, and he also said that the latest Senate attempt at immigration legislation was amnesty that wouldn’t pass because it was very bad legislation.
