The growing number of young Hispanic mothers is the primary cause for an uptick in Montgomery County's teen pregnancies, according to state statistics presented yesterday to county leaders.
In the county, which has one of the lowest overall birthrates in the United States, the birthrate increased 16 percent from 2002 to 2005 among all women 15 to 19, according to a report by county staff. In the same period, births for women in that age group dropped nationally and statewide.
Births among Hispanic women 18 to 19, which have particularly driven the growth in teen pregnancies in Montgomery, have increased more than 30 percent in the past decade, according to the report.
"The statistics are striking," said County Council member George L. Leventhal (D-At Large), chairman of the council's Health and Human Services Committee, which met yesterday with the Education Committee to discuss the numbers.
In Montgomery, births among black women 18 to 19 have declined in the past 10 years, and the birthrate for that group is nearing that of white women 18 to 19, the report said. Exact data were not available.
Committee members listened to testimony from social service advocates and others who pointed to a variety of factors for the growing numbers in the Latino community.
Candace Kattar, executive director of Identity Inc., a nonprofit group in Gaithersburg that serves Latinos, said low-income and undocumented teen moms often might not see pregnancy as a barrier to goals such as an education or career.
"A lot of the teen Latino moms are actually quite happy to be pregnant as teenagers," Kattar said.

"A lot of the teen Latino moms are actually quite happy to be pregnant as teenagers," Kattar said.
"These girls don't want to become pregnant, but they don't know much about contraception," she said.
"We're not understanding why these girls are getting pregnant. It's totally different for this community."
Not tough to figure. Latinos have sex at early ages, eschew birth control, know that their kids will automatically become U.S. citizens if born on American soil, and (correctly) assume that the U.S. taxpayer will foot the bill for everything.
The US pays for the births of Latino babies and supports Planned Parenthood. Cut it all out.
Rescind the anchor baby laws, cut off the welfare freebies, heavily fine illegal-hiring employers, and guard the borders as if our national surival depends on it (which it does).
Illegal Immigration’s Family Breakdown
Human Events 6/5/07
Social workers in Southern California are in despair over the epidemic of single parenting. Not only has illegitimacy become perfectly acceptable, they say, but so has the resort to welfare and social services to cope with it.

Ah yes.....More evidence of the “Shared Family Values” we have with the illegal aliens streaming across our borders —— just like El Presidente Jorge told us...
I for one, would rather deal with the “problems” associated with NO illegal immigrants.....
My lettuce may cost $0.20 more, but that would be more than made up by the money we would NOT be spending to educate, medicate, incarcerate or dodge all the drunk drivers or spend on securing our homes or spending on insurance....
Imagine -— Tax dollars being spent to benefit only CITIZENS !!
Isn’t that a novel concept?
How US demographics will change in a generation :
NOW :
35 million African-Americans have inflicted 17 million abortions on themselves. (Their numbers might be DOUBLE what they are now, without that.)
Hispanics eschew abortion and contraception, believe in large families, and increase in numbers relative to other groups.
A GENERATION FROM NOW :
The largest minority in America is Hispanic, Catholic, anti-abortion, believers in hard work and education, and rapidly mobile up into the middle class.
Actually the abortion rate among Hispanics is quite a bit higher than the white rate, although not as high as the rate among black women. So you are getting this outcome despite a substantial abortion rate.
“We’re not understanding why these girls are getting pregnant. It’s totally different for this community.”
It’s the water in Montgomery County?
In San Antonio the malls are filled with pregnant Mexican teens dragging their toddlers along as they shop on welfare dollars. They’ve learned it’s an easier meal-ticket than actually working or learning a skill.
So it needs to be taken away.
Same story as TN and GA from the other day. We may have won a few battles but we are ultimately losing the war. The numbers do matter.
At least 44 babies are born to illegal immigrants every day at one hospital in Dallas.
Check it out:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/parkland.asp
The article confirms that 11,200 anchor babies are born every year at Parkland. (And those figures are from a year and a half ago.)
stop the f’n anchor babies and the teen birthrate will fall like a lead ballon!!!
why do taxpayers have to pay for these illegals and their spawn???
You and I pay!
“why do taxpayers have to pay for these illegals and their spawn???”
Ask Jorge!
