BUDGET UPDATE
California Republic ^ | 07-27-2007 | Tom McClintock

Posted on 07/27/2007 5:49:41 PM PDT by Amerigomag

The Senate did not meet again today, and that’s a big mistake.

We are running a very real risk of another Gray-Davis-sized fiscal crisis next year and for exactly the same reason: the governor increased spending much too fast, the economy is now cooling, and the level of spending cannot be sustained. We have to take decisive action now to avert far more difficult choices in the immediate future.

The proper parliamentary process is to put forth a clean senate bill that can be amended – and then to allow individual amendments to be presented – one after another – day after day if necessary – and to be debated and voted upon not as a package but as individual proposals that rise of fall on their own merit, under full public scrutiny. That’s the way it used to be done.

Over the last few months, we’ve been doing everything to avoid that process. Freely elected representatives with a sworn duty to the constitution and a moral duty to their constituents cannot be ordered about like children. I would have hoped the senate president would have learned that by now.

Name-calling is not going to achieve this. Threats and lock-ups and office lock-outs are not going to achieve this. Only many hours of honest and forthright debate in full public view are going to produce an honest budget.

Now is the time to open up this process, allow free debate and let the Senate hammer out a budget that works.

The voice of conservative, fiscal reason hammers away while the Democrats delay and promote their blind investments

There are none so blind as those who can see, but choose not to.

Tom, as usual, is dead on.

Many of the cuts affect programs most Californians would never vote for. The MSM/Drive By Media has done a bang-up job in hiding from Californians the truth as to how awful the budget is. The only mention is those wascally Senate Republicans holding up more spending for the children. How dare they!

Although Hesse is about 7 hours north of Arnie’s home, I definitely get your point.

Too bad that since day one he's been as courageous as a French ballet dancer.

I think a bunch of us need to silently go down to the observation section of the Senate chambers with some green signs that say "Good For You!" and red ones that say "Bullcrap!" Silently hold up the appropriate sign to what ever is being said at each moment for a full day!!!

They don't even need to know who we are, or that we're connected... We're just citizens that care and are paying more than just taxes... We're paying some ATTENTION!!!

Nope. No signs allowed. The sergeants will kick you out. But do wave. I'll be the good looking one at the back of the chambers.

Seems like only yesterday that Schwarzenegger was dreaming dreams of the White House - - amending the Constitution and all that. The only thing I can give Arnold is that he has not raised taxes. That’s a very big plus. Still, you have to be a little nervous.

I’m glad Tom is working on that budget.

By the way, I know Tom did not win the Governor’s job, so how did the campaign to become Lt. Governor work out?

Well then we'll order some scrolling shirts/blouses and send graphics of either a green "thumbs up" or a red "the dirty finger!" Ha Ha ha!!! Should make quite a fashion statement!!!

Hey! Who worries about a few sergeants? Civil disobedience is way overdue! These reprobates don't even subscribe to their solemn oaths!!! It's time the people actually got in their faces in a non-violent fashion!!!

In fact, just like children, they've gotten away with "pushing the limits" that they've practically forgotten there are any limits AND WE NEED TO REMIND THEM AS FORCEFULLY AS IS POSSIBLE!!! Nothing else is getting their attention!!!

I'll never forget how arrogant that damn Pistol Packin Perratta was when we were down there chanting "CAN YOU HEAR US NOW???" Were you there in those days???

They can start by totally abolishing at least two dozen state agencies and departments. CA’s government is the most bloated in the nation.

The only thing I can give Arnold is that he has not raised taxes.

Only one small problem with that gift. The statement isn't true.

The Austrian has raised taxes much faster than his predecessor Davis, has raised them to the highest per-capital level in California's history and has raised the taxes of at least two generations. Only Wilson imposed a larger, single, one-time, tax increase.

Not withstanding Wilson's one exception , Schwarzenegger has implemented the largest, cumulative, tax increases of any governor in the state's history. The Austrian is the King of California Taxation.

He isn't LG either, but it isn't because I didn't vote for him.
