Smoking just one cannabis joint raises danger of mental illness by 40%

A single joint of cannabis raises the risk of schizophrenia by more than 40 per cent, a disturbing study warns.

The Government-commissioned report has also found that taking the drug regularly more than doubles the risk of serious mental illness.

Overall, cannabis could be to blame for one in seven cases of schizophrenia and other life-shattering mental illness, the Lancet reports.

The grim statistics - the latest to link teenage cannabis use with mental illness in later life - come only days after Gordon Brown ordered a review of the decision to downgrade cannabis to class C, the least serious category.

The Prime Minister is said to have a 'personal instinct' that the change should be reversed, with more arrests and stiffer penalties for users.

Cannabis has been implicated in a string of vicious killings, including the recent stabbing of fashion designer Lucy Braham.

The authors of the latest study, the most comprehensive of its kind and commissioned by the Department of Health, said: 'Policymakers need to provide the public with advice about this widely-used drug.

“Hello, is this the FBI?” “Yes, what do you want?” “I’m calling to report my neighbor Billy Bob Smith! He is hiding marijuana inside his firewood.” “Thank you very much for the call, sir.” The next day, the FBI agents descend on Billy Bob’s house. They search the shed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana. They swore at Billy Bob and left. The phone rings at Billy Bob’s house. Hey, Billy Bob! Did the FBI come?” “Yeah!” “Did they chop your firewood?” “Yep.” “Happy Birthday, Buddy!”

It would be interesting to know how the stats would break on this thread between those who have never smoked a joint and those that have, and whether there is a relationship to the opinion that is expressed.

POLONIUS: And then, sir, does he this--he does--what was I about to say? By the mass, I was about to say something: where did I leave?

REYNALDO: At 'closes in the consequence,' at 'friend or so,' and 'gentleman.'

POLONIUS: At 'closes in the consequence,' ay, marry; He closes thus: 'I know the gentleman....

“A single joint of cannabis raises the risk of schizophrenia by more than 40 per cent...”

Uh-oh, Where does that leave the 2.5 joints user?

Ha - fortunately, smoking a second joint reduces your risk of schizophrenia by the same amount. So always make sure you smoke two at a time. However, that extra half a joint will probably make you insane.

(1.3% * .4) / 100 * 100 million americans that ever smoked pot = about a half million extra nuts.

Where are they? This study is pure BS.

And remember, the first and foremost sign of mental illness is denial that one is mentally ill.

There can be little question that chronic cannabis use does result in an increased incidence of Schizophrenia; however, remember, while a catastrophic illness, schizophrenia has a lifetime prevalence of about1-2%. This low prevalence is based on adequate assessment and and not just associating bizarre behavior and delusions with the diagnosis.

The way the article is worded unrealistically accentuates the dangers. That said, it is hard to imagine anyone wanting to take on this risk. But, then again, what is sought is a form of pleasure and there seems to be a universal human desire througout all cultures to find something--alcohol, drugs or whatever--to alter consciousness.
