LOS ANGELES

An ethics investigation has been completed and a decision is expected soon concerning a Spanish-language journalist who had an affair with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a person familiar with the probe said Thursday.

Mirthala Salinas was having the relationship with Villaraigosa when she announced the news of his separation from his wife of 20 years on local Telemundo station KVEA, Channel 52.

Executives at the Telemundo network and parent company NBC Universal were reviewing the findings of the three-week investigation, and a decision on the fate of Salinas and perhaps other station personnel was expected to be announced next week, according to the person, who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly.

NBC Universal is a unit of General Electric Co.

Salinas, 35, was placed on leave July 5 while her employer investigated whether her romantic relationship with Villaraigosa breached journalistic ethics.

She has said station managers knew of her relationship with the mayor before she anchored the news of his break up. Salinas led into the story by saying, "The rumors were true."

The affair was acknowledged by Villaraigosa on July 3. His wife, Corina Villaraigosa, has filed for divorce.

She alluded to her personal problems Thursday in her first public appearance since filing for divorce in June. She has made no public statements in the weeks following the disclosure that her husband was romantically involved with Salinas.

In remarks at a fundraiser for Girls Today Women Tomorrow, a mentoring group, she said she considered canceling her speech but added, "I couldn't say no."

"When you make a commitment," she said, pausing with her head down, "you must always honor that commitment, unless, of course, there are extenuating circumstances or emergencies.

"When you keep commitments to yourself, it's easier to keep commitments to others," she said.

Her announcing the breakup on TV would be great to have on YouTube (with Englsh subtitles). At least Tony Villar picks cuter gals than Monica.

Even if she goes to jail, Villaraigosa will get re-elected in a landslide. There is a different standard, of course.
