WASHINGTON - A group of Senate Democrats called Wednesday for a special counsel to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales perjured himself regarding the firings of U.S. attorneys and administration dissent over President Bush's domestic surveillance program.

"We ask that you immediately appoint an independent special counsel from outside the Department of Justice to determine whether Attorney General Gonzales may have misled Congress or perjured himself in testimony before Congress," four Democratic senators wrote in a letter Wednesday, according to a draft obtained by The Associated Press.

"It has become apparent that the Attorney General has provided at a minimum half-truths and misleading statements" to the Judiciary Committee, they added.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House defended Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Thursday against accusations he gave misleading testimony to Congress. A key Republican senator critical of Gonzales said there was no sign that President Bush's support for the attorney general was weakening.

Sen. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, accompanied Bush on an Air Force One on a trip to Philadelphia. At a hearing on Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Republican had told Gonzales, "I do not find your testimony credible, candidly."

the Dems' primary activity upon attaining a majority status is to investigate, pontificate, bloviate, and do anything but legislate.

It keeps the Dems occupied and doesn't give them much opportunity to be passing dumb legislation, like the GOP-controlled Senate did last year when they passed their Comprehensive Immigration [Amnesty for Illegals] Act.

And they don't consider it taxpayer money, anyway. They consider it their money. Taxpayer money is the leftover amount in our wallets they graciously deign to give us.

And of course, not finding anything is just proof of the vast nature of the conspiracy.    *removes tin foil hat*

Does Bush really want to send another AG nominee before the Senate for confirmation? It will just give the Dems another chance to rehash all of the “illegal wiretaps” and Guantanamo hysteria once again.

I say Gonzales stays because there is nothing the Dem-controlled Senate can do about it...and Bush doesn’t want to put them in the driver’s seat once again by allowing them the chance to hold up another AG nominee just for show.

Personally, I think this might be good for the GOP. Let the Dems go after Gonzales.

I actually have no problem with this. Didn't he vow to uphold the laws of this Country? With the blind eye that's been turned towards illegal immigration, I'd want to investigate his involvement.

it was probably just a joke.

It's not their job to screw around playing election politics on the taxpayer dime, and every immigration bill is called an amnesty bill by "The Base" so your argument loses weight due to everexposure of the single, solitary issue. It's almost more onorus to see and hear the immigration dogma than it is to see and hear the Katrina dogma.

Hmm, perjury? Can’t Gonzales get out of it by asking what the definition of ‘is’ is? Compared to Clinton, gonzales is a saint.

How about the perjury of Sutton and Co. lying to Congress about the Texas Border shooting (re. “gonna shoot some Mexicans today”, a deliberate false statement”?

Sheldon Whitehouse (WHO?) of R.I.

The true Democrat who defeated the fake Democrat (Lincoln Chaffee, RINO) in last year's election.

After prosecuting boarder patrol agents and Scooter Libby; after not prosecuting Sandy Burglar or Rep. Jefferson; after not enforcing immigration law; after letting Mexican drug smugglers into the country on a free pass . . .

If he lied to Congress, I hope he sits in jail for a long long time.

This act of creating a misdeed where none actually exists has got to stop at some point.

From all accounts Gonzalez is a Bush crony who probably never should have been confirmed, but how can you prosecute someone over the fallout based on something that is well within the president's rights (firing of prosecutors).

Why is congress engaging in sting operations? It's not going to stop after Bush is gone. Any Republican president is going to come under the same attack. The left seems intent on instituting a one party system. How low can politics sink?

I heard here on FR before the 2006 elections that some felt it would be good to have the democrats in power to teach the republicans a lesson. Some like myself knew it would be a disaster. Is this good for you all? What has this lowest approval rated do nothing Democratic controlled congress done for you? A lot less than the republicans did. The democrats are wasting your money and mine with NOTHING BUT AN ENDLESS FLOW OF INVESTIGATIONS, THAT HAVE YIELDED ZERO RESULTS. They are submitting an endless stream of withdrawal of Iraq bills that are going no where. Yeah, this was good to teach us a lesson, idiots. Your money at work.

Typical RAT strategy. Go after administration officials one at a time, and with every success, they go for the next on the list. Tell you what, Senator Schumer, you take your request for a special counsel, and put it in line right behind the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the crimes your own staff perpetrated against Michael Steele, Harry Reid and family’s fraudulent real estate deals, and Teddy Kennedy’s murder of Mary Jo Kopechne. Once those issues are satisfactorily disposed of, we’ll be happy to work on your request. Until then, senator, piss up a rope.

They all make me want to puke, too. ALL of them — (R) and (D). The worst part is the sheer stupidity of most of them, and the arrogance. The impression they give the rest of the world that they represent me on anything is utterly embarrassing.
