WASHINGTON - A group of Senate Democrats called Wednesday for a special counsel to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales perjured himself regarding the firings of U.S. attorneys and administration dissent over President Bush's domestic surveillance program.

"We ask that you immediately appoint an independent special counsel from outside the Department of Justice to determine whether Attorney General Gonzales may have misled Congress or perjured himself in testimony before Congress," four Democratic senators wrote in a letter Wednesday, according to a draft obtained by The Associated Press.

"It has become apparent that the Attorney General has provided at a minimum half-truths and misleading statements" to the Judiciary Committee, they added.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House defended Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Thursday against accusations he gave misleading testimony to Congress. A key Republican senator critical of Gonzales said there was no sign that President Bush's support for the attorney general was weakening.

Sen. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, accompanied Bush on an Air Force One on a trip to Philadelphia. At a hearing on Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Republican had told Gonzales, "I do not find your testimony credible, candidly."

Our political acumen is beginning to resemble the rantings of governments in third world countries.

This belies the biggest difference between Republicans and Democrats.

Republicans want to increase the standard of living throughout the world by raising the standard in the third world countries.

Democrats was to even the standard of living throughout the world by reducing the standard of living in the United States.

You have to admit that a large number of FReepers called this one - the Dems' primary activity upon attaining a majority status is to investigate, pontificate, bloviate, and do anything but legislate. Anything for headlines, nothing for which they might be held responsible.

It's wearing a little thin. The moonbat wing of the party is already on the warpath the the powermongers at the NY Times are desperately spiking stories in their defense of She Who Must Not Be Named. It's going to be a long and tedious election cycle.

I believe these people, the congress people, are in Washington to work, not be on a perpetual witch-hunt. They are spending all their time on a get Bush at any cost campaign. Congress I pay your salary, it is time to get to work and stop the sniping.

Gonzales never said the meeting wasn’t about the TSP, he just said that’s not what he was there for as council for the President and that the descent was about another program.

Honestly. The dems urge more probes than Clinton with a fresh batch of interns. Do your jobs, morons, instead of wasting your time and our money telling everyone else how to do theirs.

Why should he resign... Democrat witch hunts... they like the traction they got with the Plame Game so they are doing what works.... Republicans better get onboard with this tactic quick... but then again maybe it only plays against who is in power... So the Republicans better start calling Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi liars and treasonous SOB’s ... Hey how bout our side do a documentary for once...

Anyone know how many “congressional investigations” and/or special persecutions about and of members of the Bush administration this makes?
