Retailers Say Michael Vick Merchandise Not Selling
WAGT Augusta ^ | July 25, 2007

Posted on 07/25/2007 1:58:57 PM PDT by Shermy

Thousands of dollars in Michael Vick jersey's hang in limbo at a North Augusta sports store. A container with dozens more, still waiting for customers.

"We don't know what we're going to do. We know we can't sell it for anything close to retail. We're either going to give it away at $10.00 or 80% off or just throw it away," SMS Sportsworld manager Bobby Sheridan said.

Vick's Footballs on display, but no takers. Boxes of Vick's new football cleats, still taped up. SMS Sports World, sending back the leather. "No one is interested at all," Sheridan said.

Since the allegations first surfaced against Vick, stores say they feel like they've been sacked and 'Vick'timized.

"We probably have $10,000 in Vick product between the cleats, jersey, footballs and yeah that money is lost," Sheridan said.

Hometown Sports is also taking a hit.

"We just had some gifts and we canceled our cleats," owner Karen Rigdon said.

Hundreds of dollars in Vick goods, pulled off Karen Rigdon's shelves. "If I can't send it back, I'll just eat it. I'll just keep it and not worry about it or destroy it," she said.

Rigdon isn't waiting for a verdict, she's already made up her mind. "I've got two dogs, one of them was rescued about a year and a half ago and I just don't see how somebody could do that to an animal," she said.

Innocent until proven guilty, but costly accusations for retailers.

Put up a sign saying $10 from every sale goes to the humane society.

The gangsta teens in town, who have the pit bulls with the heavy padlocks around their necks, wear their Vick shirts proudly.

Maybe the jerseys aren’t selling that well, but I’ve heard the Michael Vick pit bull rape racks are all the rage amongst the G dog breeders in the ‘hood these days.

I was driving through the Atlanta area today and heard an announcement on the radio that a number of retailers are pulling Vick merchandise. They specifically mentioned Dick’s Sporting Goods.

It’s a shame if Vick doesn’t play this year. Why should Browns fans be the only ones who get to throw dog biscuits onto the field?

A better idea would be a hanging in effigy using a dummy dressed in Vick stuff, with a smoldering bonfire of the stuff next to it.

Put all the stuff in a big pile and burn it. The man is thoroughly evil.

I’m a bit disturbed by the “rape rack” stuff, because “rape” is a serious crime in the human world, and the idea that a dog could be “raped” as if it is a crime of violence I think cheapens the word.

Is it rape when the guy on Dirty Jobs puts the pig in a harness so the male can come do his thing? Or when they breed horses, do they get a signed consent form from the mare before the act is done?

I think the charges are sensational and shocking enough without trying to draw some moral equivalence between the method of dog breeding and the crime of “rape”.

Big dogs “rape” little female dogs all the time.

I’m not sure he does get a per-item cut — it may be that he just gets paid a fat fee upfront. If not, he already got the dollars when they were sold to the retailers, if they were sold on a basis that the retailers can’t return them. Companies often lose a lot of money when they’ve paid a huge endorsement fee to an athlete who soon self-destructs as a marketing vehicle.

The term “rape rack” is slang amongst the subculture. Apparently the dog fighting isn’t enough, but they apparently get some type of gratuitous, vicarous pleasure from seeing an immobilized bitch getting inseminated.

Now THAT is an excellent idea. Seriously. wow.

People do stupid things and get into trouble over stupid things and then there are those who do SERIOUS, BAD, EVIL things. This is horrendous. I don’t care if they are Pit Bulls or not. It is torture and it s barbaric to pit them against each other. Where are the very souls of the people who could do this over lousey money? Does money mean that much to them? If so...they are lost to begin with.

Michael Vick has taken himself from someone I liked and respected. I thought he was different. Now he has tossed a career down the drain and for what? More $$$$? I don’t care what anyone says...dog fighting is just unnecessary and unforgiveable.

Innocent till proven guilty but so far it’s not looking good for him. And if he IS guilty...it should NOT look good for him. People have spoken up and out once again and it is paying off.
