Pope: Creation vs. evolution clash an ‘absurdity’
MSNBC ^ | 7/24/2007

Pope Benedict XVI said the debate raging in some countries — particularly the United States and his native Germany — between creationism and evolution was an “absurdity,” saying that evolution can coexist with faith.

The pontiff, speaking as he was concluding his holiday in northern Italy, also said that while there is much scientific proof to support evolution, the theory could not exclude a role by God.

“They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other,” the pope said. “This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.”

He said evolution did not answer all the questions: “Above all it does not answer the great philosophical question, ‘Where does everything come from?’”

Benedict also said the human race must listen to “the voice of the Earth” or risk destroying its very existence.

you brought up surviving - I asked you ‘evolve to what’ and got a non answer. I ask about ‘surviving what’ and you say cold vs hot. Discuss what? ‘Your thoughts’? LOL! I’m got something better to do - I’m reading a Good Book.

>>Spending years of one’s life trying to prove God’s Word wrong is foolish. And detrimental to one’s life after death. Imagine man saying God’s Word isn’t true because man ‘can’t find something’ after hundreds of years of search.<<

Doubts are human. Jesus had them.

But the general theory of evolution, complex diverse life developing from similar small life over a very long time is like the earth traveling around the sun - its demonstrated so clearly that people who think God says differently must be wrong.

Not bad. Or sinful but wrong. God doesn’t want us to deny that which is clearly and abundantly in evidence -
it seems to be much more important to God that we respect him and treat each other with love.

I have that on very good authority.

But if that’s not enough for you, see the following scriptures...

That doesn't help you out. The word is also used in different places to denote vanity, which is also one of it's many meanings.

Look, I'm not disagreeing that the word could became in Genesis 1:2. My argument is that the article claims it must since the concept "to be" is not part of the definition....and he's wrong....and if you think I'm wrong, then formally refute the definition I posted.

The nice thing about citing god as an authority is that you can prove anything you set out to prove.

The Bible is the Living Word of God and It will stand when you are no longer here. It will NEVER change. You want ‘religious document’, pick up Darwin’s papers’ - your bible - with his anti-Christ, anti-God teachings.<<

You know.... men who receive revelations are still human. They still have only the knowledge of their time and they still have predjudices - that’s why Jesus admonished us to be kind and loyal when considering divorce and why he de-emphaisized strict kosher rules and why the Paul and Peter sometimes disagreed about important doctrinal matters.

We are still human. Moses and Abraham must have been truly special to recieve such great revelation but it looks like God did include in that revelation the advance math and science they would have needed to truly understand the age of the earth or the size of the universe.

The creation story is as they were able to understand it - more like the later parables from Jesus than a text book.

God doesn’t seem to preempt our learning but wants us to be good to others no matter what science we discover.

Ah yes, nothing like accusing me of hating God along with typical anti-Catholicism. Any other falsehoods you’d like to make?

God doesn’t want us to deny that which is clearly and abundantly in evidence -,

Yes, the universe is HIS CREATION - who can deny that. He created man in His image and likeness. He breathe into man and gave him life. He created animals and we have dominion over them. His Creation is clearly filled with evidence of His Majestic Power and His Word is The Truth.

it seems to be much more important to God that we respect him and treat each other with love.

God is worthy of all honor and praise - all the time - everytime as is, His Son, Jesus, who died for all. I do treat each other with love - that's why I'm telling them the Truth lest anyone perish. God doesn't want anyone to perish and without the belief on God and His Son, Jesus, he/she will perish. God is the Creator of all - and His Word is The Truth. Don't take correction as condemnation.

I have it on good authority too - God's Word. There is no one above HIM. Now, I'm sure you will join me in praising The Living God, The Almighty, The Creator of All! And thank Him for His Son, Jesus, Our Savior. He gave His Son as ransom - to pay our sin debt - because He loved us so much. Jesus is The Living Word.

Why would you suggest that in all of the universe that one small complex speck called Earth is a mere rock to God?

That’s as baffling as much of this thread.

You know what God wants? To believe what HE says and lean NOT unto YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING. And that's what you are doing.

You know.... men who receive revelations are still human. They still have only the knowledge of their time and they still have predjudices -

Really? Who gave the revelation? The Holy Spirit. Do you believe in The Holy Spirit?

Do you believe God created the universe just as He said. Do you believe God created man in His image and likeness and breathe life into man? And He created animals and we have dominion over them?

Do you believe that His Son, Jesus, died for our sins?

Do you believe in Heaven and Hell?

Do you believe satan roars around seeking who he may devour - con by deceit? Do you believe satan is the father of lies?

Do you believe every knee will bow and say Jesus is Lord?

I do join you in that.

My revelation did not include science or math beyond what is already known today. Reading the bible it doesn’t sound like God reveals math and science beyond that of the day.

So I don’t see a problem with accepting the people who wrote down their revelations did not know science like how the earth revolves or how life evolved and thus their words are a reflection of their time.

Even today good Christians don’t seem to get revelations of testable science knowledge.

I think the Pope got it right when he said there is no conflict between our faith and what we observe from science.

I think some people who think God is threatened by what science has found have too small a view of God. He’s not threatened by evolution - he was here he knows life evolved. he’s not threatened by the universe being billions of years old.

Maybe He’s even happy we are finally figuring this stuff out. It wouldn’t surprise me.

Heaven natural law, I thought that was a good name but you really take your schooling on the history of Hebrew quite seriously.

I think someone has discovered they are a bit out of their element. :)

Not clear why people find it so difficult in this very grand universe, that God can not put into place a measure of evolution among the many rules. That’s not to suggest that evolution is altogether correct among those laws, but it certainly can fit to some significant extent in our limited “universal” vocabulary.

Think I understood that in 9th grade. Why do people subscribe that among all the laws we have learned, i.e., speed of light, etc., that some form of evolution is beyond God’s capability?

Is it the need for a fundamentalist and simple belief based on words on a page?

That’s too sad.

Actually God spoke to me. There is a thread here about it somewhere. But its nothing new (although it was powerful and wonderful and new to me.)

Jesus was very clear on what is most important to God.

>>

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (NIV, Mark 12:28-31).
<<

>>
Really? Who gave the revelation? The Holy Spirit. Do you believe in The Holy Spirit?<<

I think it was God, in my case - But if the Holy Spirit is part of God thqt would be consistant.

>>Do you believe God created the universe just as He said. Do you believe God created man in His image and likeness and breathe life into man? And He created animals and we have dominion over them?<<

Just as He said, sure. Just as a human from thousands of years ago was able to understand and write down - that was limited by the man. Its like a parable of Jesus.

>>Do you believe that His Son, Jesus, died for our sins?<<

Yes.

Why do you seem so hostile to me? Do you feel threatened that I am not troubled by the evidence of our eyes?

Its bedtime here, so if you don't mind, I'll just put the spine to the feathers.

But you just go on preaching. You don't seem to need me for that.

If you have anything to say regarding science, just ping me and I'll check it in the morning.

But if it's just more preaching you have, don't bother.

When considering days its worth looking at Psalms 90:4 and looking up the research of Isaac ben Samuel of Acre and his work on the age of the universe in the 1300’s.
