The problem with emphasizing Detroit's and other older cities problems is that people from other areas of the world and country assume the entire State of Michigan is like Detroit.

That's absolutely true.

I have lived in the Detroit area all my life and there is nothing like it except the abandoned towns around Chernobyl. Take a look on Google Earth. Its shocking...

Detroit is a third world enclave in the middle of America complete with its own tin pot dictator. Whole neighborhoods of burned out and abandoned houses, giant car factories that havent built a car since the ‘70s, a magnificent train station designed by the same architects that designed NYC’s Grand Central Station stripped of every last scrap that could be stolen or just smashed in an orgy of spite.

I once visited a thrift store in the north of the city (On 8-mile) and there was a stripped Ford Taurus furiously burning in the middle of the parking lot. A dead German Shepard rotted a few feat away. No fire department. No Police. 25 people walked right past the scene without doing anything. Cars came and went like nothing was happening. It was surreal. I did get a nice Commodore PET though...

And in Hamtramick, you can hear the “Call to prayer” booming from the Mosque through giant loud speakers like its Mecca...

These are the people who betrayed Blacks in Detroit, not the Whites who took White flight (followed by Black flight) from the city and gave them free reign to "run" the city . . . and fail magnificently. And, yet, they still blame even this on the White man.

Money quote!

It's not a bad looking city from a distance but much is simply a facade.

The problem with emphasizing Detroit's and other older cities problems is that people from other areas of the world and country assume the entire State of Michigan is like Detroit. A lot of Governors came to a conference in the Traverse City area last week and were surprised at how nice and vibrant it was. Even in Detroit’s suburbs, visitors are surprised that the disastrous decay that they have heard of is not present outside the Detroit City Limits except in a few small areas.

This is very true. I've been living and working in San Francisco for the past two years, and I can honestly say I have yet to run across a neighborhood or suburb that can compare to some of the magnificent suburbs of Detroit.

I agree. Michigan is dying along with the auto industry. I can’t imagine what will happen in this state when bad times hit on a national basis.

Everywhere you go the stores are closing, the houses are for sale, the toys (dirt bikes, snowmobiles, classic cars) are down by the curb with “for sale” signs. A guy down the street from me has an elaborate custom garden shed that matches his house for sale for $1500 down by the curb.

And Hilary! wants to “Grandholm” the rest of the country.

Yep more invaders who don’t give a whit about America only the money they can get from it and how they can change it and make it in their imagine. Unfortunately there are too many “Americans” who are willing to help them do it.

One urban renewal solution : bulldoze it flat, start over. Every razed, empty building means another chunk of parkland reclaimed. If taxes aren’t paid on it, it’s GONE. Use it or lose it. Simple solution, who has the cahones to DO IT?

I'm usually a 100% supporter of property rights but Detroit is such a mess that a radical solution along those lines may be absolutely necessary.

Dear Clemenza, I stand corrected.

Families are not responsible for funding a turn around.

The affluent and tax payers fund programs enforced by police that clean up cities.

Unfortunately, some elected officials prefer perpetuating misery for personal political gain. Why not knock the burned out buildings down if not to show there is work to be done and reinforce the invisible boogie man?

Motor City is burning (Al Smith / MC-5 )

Ya know, the Motor City is burning babe,
there ain't a thing in the world that they can do.
Ya know, the Motor City is burning people,
there ain't a thing that white society can do.
Ma home town burning down to the ground,
worser than Vietnam.
Let me tell you how it started now ...
it started on 12th & Clairmount that morning.
It made the pig cops all jump & shout,
Ah said, it started on 12th & Clairmount that morning,
It made the pigs in the street freak out.
The fire wagons kept comin', baby,
but the black Panther snipers wouldn't let them put it out, wouldn't let them put it out, wouldn't let them put it out.
Guitar solo
"get it on ... "
Well, there were fire bombs bursting all around, people, Ya know there were soldiers standing everywhere.
I said there was fire bombs bursting all around me, baby, Ya know there was National Guard everywhere.
Ah can hear my people screaming.
Sirens fill the air, fill the air, fill the air.
Guitar solo

Your mama papa don't know what the trouble is . ..
you see, they don't know what it's all about.
Ah said, your mama papa don't know what the trouble is, baby, they just can't see what it's all about.
Read the news, read the newspapers, baby?
You just get out there in the street and check it out!
Guitar solo

Ah said, the Motor City is burning, people,
I ain't hanging round to fight it out.
Ah said, the Motor City is burning, people,
just not hang around to fight it out.
Well, I'm taking my wife and my people and ???
Well, just before I go, baby, ???? ,
firemans on the street, people all around,
Now, I guess it's true,
I'd just like to strike a match for freedom myself,
I may be a white boy, but I can be bad, too.
Yes, it's true now, yes, it's true now.
Guitars, end

"Let it all burn! Let it all burn!"

My brothers NEVER let go of the teams. (I guess it's a Detroit thing.) As a result, every Thanksgiving dinner of my life has had to wait to be served until the Lions game was over!

Me too, I left Michigan years ago, but I still am a diehard Lions and Tigers fan.

Blacks, when elected to political office behave like African Potentates used to. The only difference being they aren’t
carried about on a litter and send out tribesmen to raid neighboring villages for loot, slaves and of course, women for the harem.

Kirkpatrick, in all seriousness, is like the tin pot dictator of some third world country complete with thug body guards ready to rough up reporters like Steve Wilson who get out of line by reporting the truth....

No kidding. They can sweep the Red Sox but struggled with the Royals.

I’m still sick about KC sweeping them last year to give the Twinkies the pennant.
