Amendment Keeps Taxpayers from Funding Mandatory HPV Vaccines
The U.S. House passed an amendment Wednesday that will keep the government from funding mandatory vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Republican Reps. Phil Gingrey of Georgia and Jim Jordan of Ohio introduced the amendment following efforts across the country to require young girls to receive the vaccine to attend school.
Merck & Co.s Gardasil vaccine protects against the four most common strains of HPV, a sexually transmitted infection. Focus on the Family Action supports widespread availability of the vaccine, but holds that parents should make the decision of whether their daughters are vaccinated.
Linda Klepacki, sexual health analyst for Focus Action, said: We applaud the passing of this amendment preserving parental choice.
The only gripe I would have with enforcing vaccination is that the disease--chlamidia--is not as dangerous as say, AIDS, is. But there are enough infected women out there to cause a big spike in cervical cancer rates in years to come. Not to mention the other results of carrying the virus around for years.
Almost no one who has the virus is aware of it. In ERs, it is the default assumption that most of the adults who appear with any kind of STD-sounding complaint already have it.
It still doesn’t make it any more YOUR business.
Having served my country faithfully for most of my adult life, I would have to assume you have no clue what a serviceman has to be innoculated against.
Your assumptions are incorrect.
Let me reiterate once and for all.
My families health choices are not yours nor the government’s business.
Hillary may think it takes a village, but I prefer to trust independant individuals rather than the overseeing overintrusive all empowered guvmint that seems to think it knows better than the rest of us.
I never said it was. A vaccine for Cancer leaves me “mixed” if you care to read the entire post.
I guess libertarianism is all very well until one's daughter gets infected by some infected boy somewhere, and can't be cured of the virus.
They should have started the campaign to vaccinate with testing and informing all those who are already infected and should be aware of their hugely increased chances of cervical cancer (very few cases of cervical cancer are unrelated to HPV).
Maybe you ought to pop on over to the FR homepage and give the Mission Statement a read.
Just a thought.

Well, that's taking it to the extreme but I'll play.
My oldest, 27 yo Daughter, Virgin, till she thought she HAD a husband, lost hope of that when she deployed to Iraq (she listened to her peers instead of mom/dad. Stuff happens like that in the Military). Next oldest, 22 yo Daughter, Virgin till married. My next oldest, 17 yo Daughter, swears to remain Virgin till married. My next oldest 15, Autistic Son, (Likely) until I buy him his first piece, Virgin till whenever.
We're not particuralry religious folk, just smarter than the average bear, but you seem to have a bit less faith in yours, not questioning their upbringing mind you. If this is such a concern for you and yours, head off to the clinic. Come near mine, like I said earlier, bring your Army.
My kids were raised to know and respect their FReedom, so you guys who think you know better than them are going to have some pains for decades to come. That was intentional BTW. I saw this nanny state crap coming decades ago and raised them to be a pain in the ya'lls butt long after I leave. Enjoy that brief glimpse into your chaotic future. Blackbird.
I wish we could get similar ammendments for:
Medicare
Medicaid
Social Security
etc.
But since you want to talk about what SHOULD be read... I just read a fabulous book "Ghost Map" about a cholera outbreak in London before the Germ Theory.
I don't know how important this HPV vaccine is to public health, but I'm not gonna cry that you were forced by the vicious Nanny State to avoid infantile paralysis.
Can you raise a daughter to never marry a liar?
Libertarian's fault that the daughter had unprotected sex somewhere?
Where were the parents at?
Most men who carry it are absolutely oblivious that they carry it. I wonder if all the fathers of virgin daughters here were themselves virgins on their wedding nights?
People do forget that this disease causes more than cancer. There are other symptoms of STDs that cannot be treated with antibiotics. Everyone exposed to HIV does not contract it--but this HPV increases risk of contracting HIV as any STD will.
Funny! ;-D
Welcome to life, no one gets out alive. Blackbird.
Would it make a difference to you to know that the gov’t is trying to impose a non-effective vaccine on the populace?
It’s not to be compared with smallpox or other diseases you can get through casual contact.
The gov’t has no right to impose it’s will on the people.
I agree with MT. We’ve become so like sheep in our society that we no longer recognize when our wills have been broken and our lives sucked into bondage.
We ain't talking about parsinps, sweetheart. We're talking about my inalienable rights and the limits which are imposed upon the Federal government by the US Constitution.
And by the way, I wasn't discussing libertarianism, I was discussing a dusty old principle called "Federalism". You might want to look it up.
Now you may be willing to toss your rights on the trash heap of history, and that is your privilege. But you have no right to force your will on me by using a government stooge who may happen to be willing to do your bidding.
You have no right to force me to be an unwilling participant in some mass medical experiment.
It's largely the fault of boneheaded do-gooders who are willing to take little slices off the Constitution that we're in the mess we are today.
Now if you take the Constitution as lightly as you seem to I'd politely suggest you find another forum to post it in. Especially considering that your views are plainly diametrically opposed to the purposes of this one.

No, I guess we're really talking about condescending sexist jerks. Or at least I'm talking to one. Snookums.
So, don't pay your taxes, if you think a pompous pronouncement will keep the Man away. Don't vaccinate your kids for polio. See what that gets ya. And keep your kids out of school, and college, etc.
And when some illegal alien infects you or yours with some disease, at least his inalien rights haven't been violated. He didn't want to get his innoculations. He didn't. (Have you heard of the Kissing Bug?)
As for HPV--I don't know if it's worth the hassle of dealing with those tinfoil types terrified of flouridated water to attempt to eradicate an STD in the general population. It's just women with cancer, after all.
Nobody you'd care about. Snookiepie.
This is true, and I have alluded to that more than once. It doesn't have the stature of other vaccines at saving a large number of people and requiring the public health enforcement. But that begs the question and the assertion that the government has no legitimate interest in vaccinating the public.
It's far from ineffective, however. The public is not aware of how widespread this virus is and how easily transmitted. Most haven't a clue that they have it. It is also relatively new (not like smallpox or polio). This means we will see a sharp uptick in new cases of cervical cancer several years from now.
The virus has no treatment. Once your daughter contracts it, she's got it for life. It doesn't go away by expressing disappointment in her morals.
It’s not an effective vaccine! I’m trying to tell you, this is not some magical treatment. It’s not even very effective and is unsafe.
