I do not understand. I had a colonoscopy last year and they did not give me any sedation. I was awake the whole time.

It is uncomfortable, but not painful.

Did you have polyps removed? I kinda think they already knew he had polyps...so the docs elected to put him under...to remove the polyps.

Me too. I had one a couple of months ago. It was a breeze but the preparation the day and night before was the pits...aaargh!

When I had mine all they gave me was a little fenergan (sp?) about an hour before the procedure to sort of relax me. Once in there the doc asked me if I wanted something like demorol and I said no. I wanted to be awake and watch the procedure on the screen. It was a fricking piece of cake (except for the moment when they pumped my colon up a little too much...that kinda hurt). Everybody over the age of 35 should have a colonoscopy. It's a very simply lifesaving procedure.

PS - The doc found no polyps or anything else worrisome in me. However, he DID say he was able to tell I ate alot of spicy food. He was right!

Unless there is some medical contraindication, the usual manner of performing a colonoscopy includes sedation and someone to drive you home. They frequently use midazolam (Versed) which has some amnestic properties and most people don’t remember much about the procedure. The DO however tend to remember the bowel prep.

I had a colonoscopy last year and they did not give me any sedation. I was awake the whole time.

The nurse supposedly sedated me, but during the whole procedure I was awake also, watching on the monitor, and talking to the nurses and doctors. It was kinda cool, except for the discomfort.

Actually, the worst part of the procedure is the preparation. Yuk.

After the procedure I felt fine, although some of the patients were out or barely coherent.

Then I asked the doctor, I bet you meet many a$$holes in this type of work. He said, "I do, especially the ones who talk through the whole procedure."

it’s different when they know they have to cut out polyps. I had to have sedation for those also. many people can undergo no sedation in an office visit for a routine colonoscopy, but not when a blade is in involved.

Doctors always sedate you here for a colonoscopy. There is another procedure where they don’t but they do for the colonoscopy. They’ve been after me to have mine for two years. :-(

It could be that your insurance wouldn’t pay for the sedation if you have insurance. Some don’t.

“I do not understand. I had a colonoscopy last year and they did not give me any sedation. I was awake the whole time.”

That is very unusual. They will not let you leave until you use the bathroom [pee]. Something about waking your kidney’s up. And that takes a while.

How much does the average colonoscopy cost? Just wonderin’. Around $4000 here in Maine.

I had sedation both times although the first time, when they removed seven polyps, I was awake through the whole thing. The only pain I had was like a gas pain when they inflate you a little to remove the polyp. The second time, I was out like a light the second they gave it to me and didn’t wake up until I was in the recovery room.
