Fred Thompson Now Leads Rudy Giuliani While Hillary Clinton Maintains Lead Over Barack Obama

Other Candidates Still A Long Way Behind These Four Leaders.

In the Republican nomination race, former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson, while still not a declared candidate, has edged marginally ahead of Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Three in ten (29%) of those who expect to vote in a Republican primary or caucus would vote for Thompson while 28 percent would vote for Giuliani (and a one percent difference is not statistically significant). On the Democratic side, the top contenders have not changed. Senator Hillary Clinton is still in the lead, as over one-third (35%) of those who would vote in a Democratic primary or caucus would vote for her, while 28 percent would vote for Senator Barack Obama.

Looking at the next tier of candidates on the Republican side, Senator John McCain leads the group with 17 percent saying they would vote for him followed by Mitt Romney (9%) and Newt Gingrich (6%). On the Democratic side, 14 percent would vote for John Edwards, 13 percent for Al Gore and 5 percent for Governor Bill Richardson. All other candidates on both the Republican and Democratic side are supported by less than five percent. One thing to remember is that this is a view from a national perspective. Many of these candidates are spending a great deal of money on advertisements in certain states such as New Hampshire and Iowa, and this is not reflected in national level data.

These are some of the results of a Harris Poll of 2,225 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive® between July 6 and 13, 2007. This survey included 822 adults who expect to vote in a Democratic primary or caucus and 560 adults who expect to vote in a Republican primary or caucus. Like all polls conducted well before an election, this should not be read as a prediction. Rather, it is a snap shot of the presidential "horse race", at an early stage in the race.

Before being asked to pick their first choice in the primary elections, all adults surveyed were also shown a list of all the main candidates in both parties and some other well-known Republicans and Democrats, and asked which of them they would consider voting for. They could name as many people, in both parties, as they wished.

Among Democrats, more people say they would consider voting for Hillary Clinton (70%) than for Barack Obama (59%). However, Obama leads Clinton among Independents (by 39% to 31%). Among Republicans, just over half say they would consider voting for Rudy Giuliani (54%) while 43 percent would consider Fred Thompson. Giuliani also leads Thompson among Independents (26% to 19%).

When the replies of all adults are taken together, 67 percent would consider voting for one of the Democrats and 59 percent would consider voting for one of the Republican leaders. While almost all Democrats (93%) and Republicans (91%) would consider one of the leaders from their own party, the Independents are pretty equally divided. Two thirds (67%) of Independents would consider one of the Democratic leaders while 61 percent would consider one of the Republican leaders.

The Bloomberg Factor

With New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's recent party switch from Republican to Independent and the emerging undertones of a possible independent presidential bid on his part, Harris Interactive chose to add the Mayor to the list of people for whom voters would consider voting. At this point, 13 percent say they would consider voting for Michael Bloomberg, Independent. In looking at the partisan breaks, 11 percent of each party say they would consider him compared to one in five (19%) of Independents.

There is also a question of which candidates he might take votes away from. One in five Giuliani voters (19%) say they would consider voting for Michael Bloomberg, as would 18 percent of both John Edwards and Al Gore voters. Looking at the other New Yorker in the race, one in ten of Hillary Clinton's voters say they would consider Michael Bloomberg.

The Harris Poll is the first major poll to reflect what Rasmussen has been showing for about 3 weeks now, giving more credibility to both polls.

But note the split of the Bloomberg voters (given that it is a small sample, and early in the season etc etc): one in five of Guillani’s potential voters would consider Bloomberg but only one in ten of the HRC’s.

Am I totally off the planet if I assume that this was the Clintonides plan all along? (Remember Perot....)

Are you being sarcastic or serious? I can’t tell, because you have made a good case either way, so I would really like to know.

Rasmussen, Zogby and now Harris.

Anybody want to bet why the DBM paid for polls seem to be lagging?

I would hope it wouldn’t need a /sarcasm tag...

If you think it’s serious you need to read Fred.

Anti abortion, accomplished wife, etc. etc. etc...

I'm just checking, I really don't know much about Fred other then I saw him talking once on TV during an interview clip. He seems like a solid person, but I'm a little suspicious of someone who left politics to go back into acting, no matter how solid of a person that he comes across, can you blame me?

If Mason Dixon were to come out the same, and Harris and rass hold steady, I’d state it’s fair to state he’s officially the front runner.

FOX, CBS, ABC, GallOP, FOX, AP...eh....less reliable.

I don’t know if I’d expect much better then this though, not until an actual declaration. Not that this isn’t a good result, but I don’t think this s going to be put away until he’s “officially” a candidate hammering them in debates. Long as he stays slightly above, or slightly below, he’s in good position until he does enter.

Well, I wouldn’t doubt the clinton’s are looking for a third party. Hillary will not do better then bill, and he never got 50%.

Presuably Rudy has been the front runner for a year. Bloomberg oviusly, though Rudy supporters deny it, hurts Rudy more then he would any other Republican or dEMOCRAT. wHETHER BY LUCK OR DESIGN BY THE cLINTON’S i DON’T KNOW.

Sorry for caps...

I do suspect there are some liberal’s inflating Paul’s numbers because of the anti-war position he holds, which could be dangerous to the GOP if libertarians jump onboard. Could also backfire if Sheehan types abandon Dems for real and support him.

No, not at all. Does sound strange, but you will find it’s something he did that demonstrates his character. He left both due to the death of his daughter and because he was tired of the crap in DC. He joked about wanting to get to the “real world” of Hollywood.

He is a man of many accomplishments, not really flashy which is a good thing. He has matured politically over the years into a solid conservative/federalist and also has an eye to capitalism and free enterprise. There are perhaps some more conservative players on the extreme right, but Fred has a solid mix of qualities and positions and he has the ability to reach past all that and make conservatism palatable to the uninitiated.

Fred said he left Washington D.C. because he missed the sincerity and realism of Hollywood.

You are suspicious of someone who “leaves politics”; i.e. leaves political office, to work for a living?

That attitude is so typically modern and so diametrically opposed to that of the Founding Fathers. This country so desperately needs term limits!
