HOUSTON (Reuters) - Construction on a border wall in southern Texas is expected to begin by this autumn, despite strong local opposition, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in an interview published on Thursday.
Chertoff told the Houston Chronicle the federal government "can't rule out" using powers of eminent domain to seize land for the wall that is intended to stem the flow of illegal immigrants entering the United States from Mexico.
In heavily Hispanic southern Texas, where cultural and economic ties to Mexico run deep, local officials, business groups and environmentalists have spoken out against the wall as unnecessary and unwanted.
But Chertoff said national security was at stake, so the project will move ahead shortly.
"I expect we'll be doing some construction in Texas this fiscal year," he said, referring to the government fiscal year ending September 30.

Exactly. They are not concerned about taking thousands of acres of land for the Mexico to Canada super highway but pitch a fit about something that actually will help to protect the country. Selective complaining for sure.

Why should Tejanos leave the country their ancestors fought for and which their families have lived in for hundreds of years? Why should they stay or be allowed to stay if they have more ties to Mexico than to the greater USA? They need to get over themselves and their "Mexicaness". I could care less about how many friends, relatives and business they have in Mexico. American security and sovereignty is more important
Advice:
Don't romanticize these Tejano clowns. I could care less about their heritage and they could care less about mine. They are either on board for a fence or not.

The term “soon” is very imprecise - particularly when it comes from an administration that has dilly-dallied on border protection for nearly 6 years.

"I expect we'll be doing some construction in Texas this fiscal year," . . . . . .
The words "some" and "soon" are weasal words that lack strong commitment or definition. Chertof is playing the appeasement card while not planning on doing any actual building on the wall. He, like Bush, opposes any action that will limit the ability of either terrorists or illegals to sneak into the US.
Anything that Chertof says should be taken with an entire salt mine as opposed to a grain of salt. The man is a professional liar.

Im in favor of a wall all along the entire border, but why start it here, where theres local opposition? Someone had the tag line for a long time, commenting on everything without reading anything, was that you?

If they don’t want the wall built south of them then build it about 50 or so miles north of them.

They don't want to build a fence so they are going to be petulant children about it.
remember McCain's "Alrigtht! Alright! I'll build their G*damn fence! "

The local opposition is businesses profiting off of the cheap labor, and the illegals themselves.
Oh, and the drug runners and ‘coyotes’ too!

Forget the Israeli wall. Think American urban Interstate Hiways. We have thousands of miles of interstate hiway walls fencing off noise and acess from the hiway to residential or commercial peoperty.
The technology is well known, easy to erect and cheap.
Essentially, prestressed concrete posts having a groove on two sides are erected at 25 or 30 feet on centers. Any of several different and even attractive prestressed panels slide down through the groove. They can be of considerable height, certainly high enought for the border. They can also be put in place quickly once an access grade is developed.

“Why not start it in Arizona, where the ranchers are crying out from relief from armed-gangs migrating north over their land?”
Because:
1) Chertoff is a DAM LIAR, AND WILL FIND ANOTHER EXCUSE WHY HE COULDN’T BEGIN BUILDING IN TEXAS.
2) Chertoff has NO INTENTION of EVER builing a wall in Arizona.

Oh, it's deliberate. This is a tactic to try to defeat it. Expect heavy media coverage daily, endless crying, wailing and gnashing of teeth, families on both sides of the border separated by an Evil Fence that no one wants, etc.
I don't think you realize how much Bush hates ordinary American citizens who want a border. He's a true globalist and absolutely ruthless. And despite his interminable lectures to us about the sacred rule of law, he isn't much interested in obeying the law that dictates the construction of the entire fence in Duncan's bill.
I begin to think Bush will destroy our party entirely rather than just obey the law and build our fence and close the border. He's done an awfully good job of wrecking us for '08 already.
Apres moi, le deluge.

remember a law has ALREADY been passed which exempts border fences from the environmental delay tactics.
Of course I will believe the wall when I see the wall.
The only objectors are the coyotes, illegal aliens on the way, and open border leftists.
