Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is 33 times more likely to occur in a Native American baby than a Caucasian baby, 37 times more than Hispanics, and 5 times more likely than a Black baby. The cost of care for each individual affected is estimated at $2.4 million over a lifetime. Yet most tribal nations have cut funding for education and prevention. Few have FAS Coordinators any longer. Read more about it and what you can do.
I don't want to sound cruel, but come on, you can't take care of people who don't want to take care of themselves. Turn on a TV, listen to the radio, or for Pete's sake, read the label on a beer bottle.
Precisely what does one say to a group whose main schtick is lying about drunk? Put down the bottle, get off your butt, get a real job....
Well, I’m with lovecraft. There has been a cut in FAS Coordinators? This is actually NOT the main problem here. People know not to smoke or drink, and they CHOOSE to do otherwise.
You ARE taking “care of people who don’t want to take care of themselves”. Your tax dollars are paying the $2.4 million/person afflicted with FAS.
Not so much that as “If you drink that your baby’s brain will look like ... and he will be retarded, and you will have lots of problems raising him.” You have to spell it out for these people. A warning label on a can of beer is about as effective as a warning label on a pack of cigarettes. And we taxpayers get to pay for the care, about $2.4 million each.
This is shocking! But they live by their own tribal laws, right? The feds or state gov’ts are powerless, right? So what can you do?
Lovecraft Biofuels? What does lovecraft have to do with it?
“This is shocking! But they live by their own tribal laws, right? The feds or state govts are powerless, right? So what can you do?”
Tribal Law is confusing and constantly contested. They are nations but the USA is sovereign. They have their own laws but they cannot violate federal laws.
Actually we are not powerless. The feds are funding many Native American projects. They have been a hot item for grant funding for several years. They are also not limited to Tribal Nation benefits. They can access federal & state benefits. That’s why WE have a problem as taxpayers, even if you might not care about the people.
Whew!!! Well then, looks like the problem's solved...if 2.4 mil/person ain't enough, than I'm just plain tapped out. LOL
I'm confused by this statement as well...Unless it has something to do with Chthulu sucking the souls out people into a bottomless hell spawned pit. Hey!!! Could there be a connection to that and taxes??!!
I don't know much about FAS/FAE in that segment of society - I do have some knowledge of this concern in adopted children from Russia.

Yeah, that’s one way of looking at it. I am about saving some of that $2.4 million through education & prevention.
There is an abundance of information available, but the problem is getting it from the sources to the people at risk in a way that is meaningful for them.
And? the various tribes seem to be making a lot of money, off casinos, etc.
What do they need my help?
Thanks.
I don't know. What does one say to once proud people who were stripped of everything, and herded onto reservations like livestock?
It is common knowlege that Whites found the Indian's Achilles heel, and exploited it for their own gain. Just like those who target certain people with meth, crack, etc...
Lovecraft had just posted/ I was responding.
I am the mom of six children born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder adopted from foster care. Visit nofas.org for information.

I think you say (’to once proud people’) — do not live in the past. Life is tough. The future is yours, should you take it.
