CIA dissenters aided secret prisons report ("helped a European probe")

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Dissident U.S. intelligence officers angry at former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld helped a European probe uncover details of secret CIA prisons in Europe, the top investigator said on Tuesday.

Swiss Senator Dick Marty, author of a Council of Europe report on the jails, said senior CIA officials disapproved of Rumsfeld's methods in hunting down terrorist suspects, and had agreed to talk to him on condition of anonymity.

"There were huge conflicts between the CIA and Rumsfeld. Many leading figures in the CIA did not accept these methods at all," Marty told European Parliament committees, defending his work against complaints it was based on unnamed sources.

The report issued last month said the Central Intelligence Agency ran secret jails in Poland and Romania, with the complicity of those governments, and transported terrorist suspects across Europe in secret flights.

Poland and Romania have repeatedly denied hosting CIA prisons on their soil.

"People in the CIA felt these things were not consonant with the sort of intelligence work they normally do," Marty said.

He said he had based his findings largely on conversations with "high officials of the CIA (and) highly placed European office-holders, who for different reasons, often honorable reasons, were ready to explain what had happened."

Since he had no power to summon witnesses, subpoena documents or search buildings, he was forced to rely on such evidence, Marty said.

"ADMISSIONS"

"The Americans themselves admitted there were secret prisons, that they abducted people from the streets, that people were handed over to countries like Syria, Yemen, Egypt where they were tortured," he said.

U.S. President George W. Bush acknowledged last year that the CIA had held top al Qaeda suspects in secret overseas detention centers but did not say in which countries.

"The president of United States made a very important statement..., I think we can all expect ... in the near future further admissions," said Marty.

He also said he would not remove name of former Polish and Romanian government officials from the report, although they threatened on Tuesday to take legal action against the senator.

The report said former Polish national security adviser Marek Siwiec and former Romanian Defense Minister Ioan Pascu knew their countries had hosted secret CIA detention centers.

"I have no reason to withdraw his name. I would certainly not be prepared to apologies. He knew exactly what was happening as did his president," Marty told a news conference, referring to Siwiec and former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski.

"I am not shaking in my shoes," he said of the libel suit that Siwiec vowed to launch in a Polish court unless Marty removed his name from the report within seven days.

Pascu challenged Marty in the hearing to substantiate his allegations or withdraw them, but the Swiss legislator did not respond directly.

Traitors would be a better description of what they are. I worked in DC and the place is filled to the brim with top salaried America haters who have access to our most secret programs and are often times in charge of national security. One day I overheard a couple of "them" talking about how they could not believe that someone had not yet attempted to assassinate President Bush and they were clearly disappointed.

These two in particular had Top Secret clearance. Another guy cleared to the gills (NSA, CIA, CPB, DOD) was a huge apologist for every enemy of the US you might bring up. I overheard him discuss how Condi Rice's own family didn't like her and on and on. Another individual joked about how we should nuke Utah and Texas and how sympathetic he was to the plight of the illegal alien. He was working for Customs Border Protection and one would have thought he'd have been more concerned about the plight of keeping illegal aliens out of the US.

The most strange thing that happened was having Phil Landfried call everyone at the building up to the top of the Kingstowne building to chastise the well educated well paid (several million dollars in salaries were there that day) in their hygiene habits. It turns out one of the well cleared individuals was getting crap all over the place in the restroom and not flushing and many people were leaving trash and sanitary napkins in inappropriate places. It turns out with all the cameras and even after installing security swipe locks on the bathrooms they had failed to catch the offending individual in a period of over two years.

I marveled that if they couldn't catch the secret sh***r it is no wonder they couldn't catch illegal aliens. I did know many good people. My boss was a conservative and a good guy and the border guys from the field were good too but they were outnumbered. The group think in Washington is horrible. They need loyalty tests more than credit checks in DC.

First and foremost, they need to have allegiance to the United States and handle things in house. This is unreal. If this is true, the CIA employees who did this should be found at all costs, sparing no expense or effort. These traitors should be tried and suffer the punishment due to treason. It's not enough that people such as Clinton decimated our nation's intelligence abilities, but that he chose to usher in a era of diversity and political correctness which has proven to be much more insideous that could ever be imagined. For whatever reason or reasons, our nation somewhere along the line decided to place the bulk of our "on the ground" intelligence work overseas with foreign nationals.

Im not going to speculate as to why such a decision was made here, but you can be well rest assured that it has to do with political correctness. The sad truth is that we have no assets of our own on the ground, at least not here in Southeast Asia. That is unless you count our agents lounging around the swimming pools at Hiltons worldwide reading USA Today and waiting for their local translators to give them the "scoop" or the FBI and DEA guys up in Bangkok who spend their days trying to score a kilo or two of smack from the Hmong.

I was watching Fox n Friends this morning - with one eye open - and they had a well-known guy on who has written a book about the clandestine group with the CIA that is leaking all the classified stuff; whose whole goal is to make Bush look bad.

The name of the book is, “Sabotage”. I had not heard a peep about this book before, so I’m hoping he shows up on O’Reilly, Hannity and a few other places. Looks like I have another book to add to my collection of “must reads”.

What’s funny about the bathroom story you tell isn’t just the CIA’s inability to catch a dump leaver, but the psychology behind someone who would do that or do any of the other nasty things you mentioned, like leave tampons or trash around, because it shows people who have a contempt for others. People who are well-mannered (and normal) don’t trash a common area unless they are selfish misanthropes, not the type of people we need in a field where dealing with people is instrumental to doing a good job. They sound like a bunch of miserable bastards driven by infighting and turf battles who literally shit to mark their territory (like animals).

Who is Mary McCarthy?

Well, as of this morning (Saturday) most of the big media don’t care. They’re fixated with the weather and gas prices ­ and anything else that will divert the public’s attention from the stunning revelation that a Sandy Berger crony has apparently been leaking top-secret information from her high post at the CIA. The media will continue to downplay this story as they cover-up their own role in exposing our nation’s secrets, including the supposed existence of CIA prisons in Europe. She’ll be called a “whistleblower” and praised as some kind of patriot (a patriot, in the eyes of the media, is anybody who undermines this administration and the war effort by leaking national security secrets to them). They will downplay that McCarthy was a Clintonoid who somehow managed to land a top post at the CIA, ultimately winding up in the CIA’s Inspector General’s Office, from where she could monitor CIA internal investigations of, well, leaks, among other things.

The news spin, to the extent attention is being paid to this by the big media outlets, is that McCarthy’s firing is unprecedented! Or it’s Bush’s fault! In one of the most absurd comments by any newsman anywhere, Newsbusters.org notes that Bob Schieffer of CBS Evening News asserted that “it is no secret that the current administration does not like its people hanging out with news reporters without permission” and he described the firing as “a first ­ a dubious first, to be sure.” Here. Is this guy for real?

If she leaked she must be charged. I wonder what Schieffer would say then? I suppose he would urge that she receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. After all, the Washington Post’s Dana Priest, who apparently served as McCarthy’s stenographer, was just awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

I must say, however, that the media’s sickening hypocrisy knows no bounds. They came to the defense of Joe Wilson and his wife, Valerie Plame, who worked behind-the-scenes to get her husband that “fact-finding” trip to Niger. They demanded an investigation into who “leaked” Plame’s identity to Bob Novak ­ which ensnared their own reporters. They hoped they would critically wound the president, and they failed. Clearly Plame was not undercover and the revelation of her identity was not a crime. Lewis Libby now stands accused of lying about a crime that never occurred and the media think that’s a good thing.

Now comes Mary McCarthy, who apparently leaked real classified national-security secrets and the media largely dismiss it or defend it. They have no curiosity about McCarthy, the extent of her leaks, to whom she leaked (beyond Priest, did she leak to other reporters, members of Congress, other governments?), how she secured top security posts, and her ties to the Clinton administration. Surely there is every reason the government should pursue this investigation at least as vigorously as the Plame matter has been pursued. Dana Priest, among others, should have her day before a grand jury.

And watch the congressional Democrats follow the media’s lead. Long ago they put party and power above victory in this war. McCarthy’s ties to Clinton threaten to take attention from their unrelenting attack on the Bush administration and their claims of incompetence in the management of the war, which they see as their ticket to majority status in 2006.

Putting that aside, the discovery of McCarthy does make you wonder how many more of her ilk have squirreled themselves into the bureaucracy, from where they seek to undermine the country. ~

Look at this. Back in December, Jack Wheeler thought that a CIA weasel leaked the intel to John McCain who then leaked it to the Washington Post. Hummmmmmmm. We may want to pursue this angle further.

How upset are you over the CIA “secret prison scandal”? Maybe you said, “What scandal?”, or maybe you’ve glanced at stories about it carried in the back pages of your newspaper. Here in Europe, it’s the giant screaming front page headline story on every paper you pick up from England to Germany.

The Europeans are in a state of high emotional froth over CIA “renditions” of Moslem terrorists seized in one of their countries and taken to a “secret prison” in Poland or elsewhere. The Euroweenies are far more concerned with the “human rights” of the terrorists than they are about the threat of terrorists to kill them.

If you think all of this is just an excuse to bash the CIA and indulge in anti-Americanism, you’re right ­ just as planned by the weasels.

Everyone on the right, it seems nowadays, from the editorials in the Wall Street Journal to conservative columnists like Mona Charen and bloggers like John Hinderacker, are issuing calls to “Investigate the CIA!” They have been suckered by the left.

They should instead be demanding, “Investigate the weasels, not the agency!” All of them have been accusing the CIA of conducting a covert war against the Bush Administration by leaking damaging classified information to leftwing journalists in the press. That the most damaging leak of all to date, the “secret prisons” story leaked to the Washington Post, is incredibly damaging to the CIA itself has not given them pause.

Why would the CIA conduct a covert war against itself? Because the agency is now being run by an ally of George Bush who is trying to root out left wing “rogue weasels” from its midst: Porter Goss.

You could call it, as some of the good guys at Langley are starting to, the Rogue Weasel Club. According to one member of the intel community, its members include:

Can You Trust the Washington Post’s Reporters?

Dana Priest has an article about possible CIA secret prisons today in the WaPo. Who is Dana Priest, and why should we believe her?

she is married to William Goodfellow, executive director of the “Center for International Policy”. The Center’s mission? It seems to be a very left-leaning organization founded by old peace activists. From their website:

Promoting a U.S. foreign policy based on international cooperation, demilitarization and respect for basic human rights The Center for International Policy was founded in 1975, in the wake of the Vietnam War, by former diplomats and peace activists....In the 1990s the Center attracted a number of senior diplomats to its staff and expanded its agenda to include reform of the nation’s intelligence agencies.

So Priest today reports on the CIA, while her husband heads a left-wing organization that wants to “reform the CIA”. Interesting.
