'Munich' Screenwriter Takes on 'Lincoln' (Spielberg to Produce & Direct 2008 movie)
SpielbergFilms.com ^ | March 28, 2007

Alongside next summer's return of "Indiana Jones 4," Steven Spielberg's upcoming adaptation of "Team of Rivals" (about the political career of President Abraham Lincoln) is consistently one of the more popular projects he has in development at this time.

While Spielberg's take on one of American history's most revered figures has been pushed back to accommodate one of American pop culture's most celebrated figures (Indiana Jones, of course!), the Lincoln project is still in serious development, and we can now officially say that things have taken a brilliant turn.

Over the project's long-gestation, "Gladiator" screenwriter John Logan has had the closest public association with the property, but now, "Munich's" Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tony Kushner is officially on the job.

DreamWorks told us today that the project still doesn't have a solid timeline, as much depends on Kushner's work and Steven Spielberg's schedule post-"Indiana Jones 4." Still, if the news of Kushner's involvement on the film doesn't bring the Lincoln project to an even more exciting plateau for you, then you really need to go back and look at Kushner's brilliant work on "Munich."

Stick with us for more Lincoln news as it develops!

Will Sasha Baron Cohen be playing Andrew Johnson?

Nah... Jefferson Davis!

More likely they will try to equate today's Republicans and the war in Iraq with the Confederate leaders Lincoln had to contend with.

The Confederate leaders and the "COPPERHEADS" were for the most part democRATS.

Actually, Cohen has the better physical resemblence to Lincoln. Neeson is too bulky.

And the bit sharing a safe-house with a bunch of Pallies was just ridiculous. They just had to show us the humanity of the animals.

I have to remind people when they bring up that movie that the entire thing was make believe. That is not how the operation went down and not how Mossad operated.

The two good points were the accurate portrayal of the hostage situation in Munich at the beginning and the re-enactment of Operation Spring of Youth, which itself wasn't a shot for shot re-enactment but delivered the overall feel and technique that Sayerat Maktal used to carry it out (dressing up as women, etc.).

At least they have someone who is the right height.

I think Neeson will make a good Lincoln. He is a top-notch actor who has portrayed everyone from an IRA assassin (Prayers for the Dying) to a cold, calculating businessman (Schindler's List). For those who are worried about his Irish accent, he was the voice of Aslan in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

“I actually liked “A.I.” It played like a Kubrick film filtered through Spielberg.”

And here I thought I was the only one. That teddy bear cracked me up.

Oh goodie. A book by an admitted plagarist about a President that ignored the Constitution. I'm sure it will be as factual as the next Harry Potter movie....

I wonder. Will they have a stunt double for Liam as he portrays abe jumping out of a legislative building to avoid a vote? Or perhaps the early speech where abe stated his desire to be the next Dewitt Clinton? I know it will have to cover his first Inaugural Address where he stated he supported the original 13th Amendment on slavery...well as long as he could have his tax dollars.

I'm sure Ms. Goodwin touched on all of these important points in his life didn't she?

Neeson also played that pervert doctor, Kinsey.

And in the end the Eric Bana / Avner character is worried that the Mossad is trying to kill him. WTF??? There was just too much wrong with that flick.

Sure, but parallels can easily be drawn between their ideals and those of today's Republicans...and they will be.

For the incident itself, they’re better off watching “21 Hours At Munich.” Although the casting is a bit weird (Bill Holden as a German police chief ?), it works. A far superior film (and made for tv).

The only reason I rented “Munich” was to see Daniel Craig. He was good.

Would love to see them tackle the illicit affair between President Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest...

Oh I think he’s a great actor and he’ll make a very interesting Lincoln. But the best actor is only as good as his screenplay and I can’t for the life of me figure out how they’ll adapt “Team of Rivals” for the screen.

Mossad didn't send guys into the field for years at a time; they didn't need an on site forger, they would have had the false documents pre-made before they went into the field; there are no indications that any Mossad operatives had moral issues with taking out Black September operatives; there's no way they would have drafted a low level secret service agent (Avner) with no field experience to head a hit squad....The list of inaccuracies goes on and on.

Golda Meir even says "Mazel Tov" to Avner when he tells her his wife is pregnant, which is not something you say to a pregnant Jewish woman. You'd think Spielberg as a Jew would've noticed something as pedestrian as that, but that pales in comparison to 2 and half hours of moral equivalence between Israel and nutjob terrorists.

I despised that movie.

Let me guess, Billbears. You're shooting for a movie with all the historical accuracy of a "Gods and Generals"?

One of the dumbest parts was the toymaker turned Mossad bomb maker who didn’t make very good bombs and had to work with substandard materials at times. You are telling me that the Mossad didn’t have expert explosives people to go after those terrorists?
