Kurds: Iraq Must Be Divided
NewsMax ^ | Monday, July 16, 2007 | Ronald Kessler

The only way to prevent Iraq from disintegrating is to divide it up and create a federation, Qubad Talabani, the U.S. representative of the Kurdistan government, tells NewsMax.

"It's impossible for us to have a strong, centralized Iraq, ever again," says Talabani, the son of Iraq President Jalal Talabani. "Those days are over. The mistrust is too great for there to be a centralized authority ruling the country."

The problem is that our fellow NATO member, Turkey, would never allow it.

The problem was groveling to Turkey which is also muslim and therefore not on the side of the west by definition.

He’s welcome to petition for it but according to their constitution that the Kurds signed there is a waiting period.

The option to split the country into three is written into their constitution. Sort of like a prenuptial agreement.

If it happens, the oil revenue split will sort itself out along geographical lines and the Sunnis will get zilch. And an oil-owning Kurdistan would have to arm itself for defence against Turkey.

There really should be three Iraqs; Shia, Sunni and Kurd. The three will never be able to co-exist without a Stalinist dictator like Hussein keeping them in line.

Iraq is much the same as the former Yugoslavia. An artificial country put together after WWI, consisting of people who couldn’t live with each other.

As The Offspring put it, “You gotta keep ‘em separated.”

An Independent Kurdistan could be a reliable US ally, but it would be LANDLOCKED, making it dependent on Syria, Iran, or Turkey to get the oil out.

And given the short-term memory of a looming Democrat Administration if they win 2008, the Kurds will likely be left alone to fend off the wolves when the time comes.

I think it should be split into 4. with a Vatican state for the Shia “holy” cities. The Kurds are really the only ones we owe in the whole Mid East. I never believed for a minute that taking this bitter, brutal divided Arab country and trying to turn it into a democracy was a very bright or practical idea.

You should be taking the big decisions of this era, not the clueless one getting paid for that.

I most wholeheartedly agree, Iraq has been a “made up” country since the fall of the Ottoman Empire
It has natural cultural, religious and economic boundaries.
Let’em be with who they want to be with..
then smack ‘em down if the get out of line

I think it is a consensus of this site that Iraq should be divided up. why don’t you call up Baghdad and I will call up Washington and we will tell them what we have decided.
