BAGHDAD, July 16 (Reuters) - Around 8,000 U.S. forces launched a fresh operation on Monday targeting Islamist al Qaeda militants in farmland south of Baghdad, the military said.The operation, called Marne Avalanche, is designed to stem the flow of weapons and militant fighters into the southern part of the capital, where U.S. and Iraqi forces are already fighting hard to clear them out, the military said in a statement.
In pre-dawn raids, helicopter-borne troops swept into an area the U.S. military said was an al Qaeda safe haven around the Euphrates river valley, 35 km (22 miles) south of Baghdad.

July 16, 2007MND-C begins new offensive operations
Multi-National Division – Center PAOBAGHDAD — Task Force Marne began an offensive today in southern Baghdad to drive out extremists.
Marne Avalanche is an offensive operation aimed at stopping southern Baghdad from being used as a safe haven and preventing the movement of weapons, munitions and insurgents into Baghdad. The operation’s intent is to improve security conditions in southern Baghdad and reduce the influence of insurgents in the area.
Marne Avalanche will build on the successes of Task Force Marne’s offensive operation, Marne Torch, which began June 1 and is ongoing.
To date, Operation Marne Torch resulted in 1,152 structures cleared, 83 insurgents killed, 278 insurgents detained, 51 caches found, 51 boats destroyed and 872 citizens entered in a biometric identification system.

But this IS the WOT. This is it. This is how it's done, operations that are ongoing while Harry Freakin Reid hauls his tired dry carcas in front of TV cameras to whine about something, or Biden calls Bush names, or rich Democrats blather on about "two Americas."
While all that GARBAGE is going on, THIS is the important stuff. If AQ were a nation, our troops would have long been home and safe.
AQ is not a nation, but an idea. And squashing that idea has to be done repeatedly, so these scum get the message that it's just not worth it.
They won't get that message if we retreat from Iraq. They won't get that message if we compare our troops to Nazis.
They'll only get that message through the actions and sacrifices of these men and women who are known only to their family and friends while the rest of the country whines that they're "tired" of this war. I imagine the troops, who've been FIGHTING it, are just a leeeetle more tired of it. But they're not whining; they're fighting. For US.

Great post. I was trying to explain WOT to a 17 yr old yesterday at a cookout. Your post is what I was basically saying. The enemy is an idea not a country. Again great post do I have permission to use it?
