Three protesters interrupted a Hindu cleric today who became the first from his religion to offer the Senate's opening prayer.
Breitbart.tv has video of Rajan Zed, director of interfaith relations at a Hindu temple in Reno, Nev., preparing to pray when a clear, loud voice came from the Senate gallery.
"Lord Jesus, forgive us, Father, for allowing the prayer of the wicked, which is an abomination in your sight," said a male protester.
The Senate's sergeant at arms was instructed to restore order, but Zed was interrupted again.
"You shall have no other gods before you. … "
Zed, who was invited by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, finally offered his prepared prayer.
"We meditate on the transcendental glory of the deity supreme, who is inside the heart of the Earth, inside the life of the sky and inside the soul of the heaven," he said. "May he stimulate and illuminate our minds."
Police officers arrested the three protesters and charged them with disrupting Congress, a misdemeanor, the Associated Press reported. The male protester told an AP reporter, "we are Christians and patriots" before officers handcuffed them and led them away.
Reid, in remarks from the chamber shortly after the prayer, defended his choice, tying it to the intense debate over the Iraq war.
"If people have any misunderstanding about Indians and Hindus, all they have to do is think of Gandhi," a man "who gave his life for peace," Reid said.
"I think it speaks well of our country that someone representing the faith of about a billion people comes here and can speak in communication with our heavenly Father regarding peace," said Reid.
The AP said Capitol police identified the protesters as Ante Nedlko Pavkovic, Katherine Lynn Pavkovic and Christan Renee Sugar.
It is a shame that congress has denied the God that founded this nation and that a few activists think that they are above the law. I would have preferred an alternate prayer offered on the capitol steps.

India has a secular government. There is no prayer of any kind.
The Indian Government is strictly secular and ALL prayer is prohibitted in the Indian Parliament, includiding Hindu prayers.
If you ignore the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment, as the Left-wing does, you might find that ALL prayers might some day be banned from American public life ..... Which is exactly what the Left wants.

Nobody was persecuting Christians here. They were removing disruptive jerks from the visitors' gallery because they were being disruptive jerks. This had nothing to do with their beliefs & everything to do with their bad behavior.

Oh, stuff it! These people were creating a disruption. They weren't persecuted. They were thrown out for their boorish, sanctimonious behavior. No sympathy from me.
Hindus aren't the bad guys.
It was a generic, nondenominational prayer. The same type of prayer I hear every night at precisely 9:55pm on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Trying to make these people out to be "victims" is pathetic. They were causing a scene. And I'm not surprised that World Nut-job Daily comes to their defense.

Maybe that type behavior was part of what influenced the Pope to declare that folks like these disruptor’s aren’t true christians.
This is the worst in religious intolerence portrayed by sup[posedly Christian-Americans in a long line of such incidents. And as some poster said eleswhere, it's downright rude.
What is it about some Christians who feel abused unless the government supports their particular nrand of religion?
