? Hindu cleric Rajan Zed turns toward protester as he prepares to open Senate with prayer (CNN)

Three protesters interrupted a Hindu cleric today who became the first from his religion to offer the Senate's opening prayer.

Breitbart.tv has video of Rajan Zed, director of interfaith relations at a Hindu temple in Reno, Nev., preparing to pray when a clear, loud voice came from the Senate gallery.

"Lord Jesus, forgive us, Father, for allowing the prayer of the wicked, which is an abomination in your sight," said a male protester.

The Senate's sergeant at arms was instructed to restore order, but Zed was interrupted again.

"You shall have no other gods before you. … "

Zed, who was invited by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, finally offered his prepared prayer.

"We meditate on the transcendental glory of the deity supreme, who is inside the heart of the Earth, inside the life of the sky and inside the soul of the heaven," he said. "May he stimulate and illuminate our minds."

Police officers arrested the three protesters and charged them with disrupting Congress, a misdemeanor, the Associated Press reported. The male protester told an AP reporter, "we are Christians and patriots" before officers handcuffed them and led them away.

Reid, in remarks from the chamber shortly after the prayer, defended his choice, tying it to the intense debate over the Iraq war.

"If people have any misunderstanding about Indians and Hindus, all they have to do is think of Gandhi," a man "who gave his life for peace," Reid said.

"I think it speaks well of our country that someone representing the faith of about a billion people comes here and can speak in communication with our heavenly Father regarding peace," said Reid.

The AP said Capitol police identified the protesters as Ante Nedlko Pavkovic, Katherine Lynn Pavkovic and Christan Renee Sugar.

how far we have fallen from the founding fathers. From a Christian Nation to persecuting Christians for their beliefs.

Oh, damn, I was so hoping that these were just liberal plants who disrupted the Senate, some trick of the Donks to show their superiority.

“..Gandhi,” a man “who gave his life for peace,..”

I have worked with many Indian engineers, and I found most of them to have a deep dislike of Ghandi.

I know I must accept that there will be other religions represented by prayer in the senate or risk being intolerant. But I think I’d rather there be NO prayer than have to listen to a hindu or muslim prayer. If I were a Senator I would have to wear ear plugs or say a Christian prayer to myself.

Don’t worry. The senators aren’t listening. The immigration debate kinda proved that.

Pot...kettle black. The man’s prayer was less idolatrous than the protest, IMO.

Zechariah 14:9

Malachi 3:6

Our First Amendment shouldn’t be violated by the new Marcionists or anyone else. And I don’t want to see religious edicts in a nation that was built on an escape from those.

I wonder if the Indian parliament opens with a Christian prayer.

All in the name of “diversity”. Today that means that Christians should be shunned and all other religions should be honored.

That’s the Democrat view.

... how far we have fallen from the founding fathers. From a Christian Nation to persecuting Christians for their beliefs.

The First Amendment specifically prohibits the United States of America from having an established religion, be it Christian or Jewish or Muslim or Hindu or Druid.

If you want to live in a nation that is legally "Christian", then you need to move to Great Britain where the Church of England is still the established religion.

These people were not arrested "for their beliefs". They were arrested for creating a public nuisance in the Senate just as they would have been arrested if they had started chanting "No blood for oil!", "Clinton was a rapist!", "Go New York Yankees!' or "Save the gay whales!".

Once you applaud the Left-wing tactic of shouting down what you do not like, including the prayers of other religions protected under the First Amendment, then don't be surprised when others who do not follow your religion decide that they have a right to start shouting down your prayers.

Unless, you are an Islamofascist in which case your neighbor becomes an infidel and by religious decree you are required to lop his head off.

I agree. If Christians are to be allowed free expression of religion by the state, then other religions must be allowed free expression. This was not a case of persecution for Christian beliefs; this was a case of Christians persecuting others for their beliefs.

Furthermore, the idea of shouting out from the Visitor’s Galley is odious. We don’t want Cindy Sheehan to make a fuss? We must follow the same rules.
