? Hindu cleric Rajan Zed turns toward protester as he prepares to open Senate with prayer (CNN)

Three protesters interrupted a Hindu cleric today who became the first from his religion to offer the Senate's opening prayer.

Breitbart.tv has video of Rajan Zed, director of interfaith relations at a Hindu temple in Reno, Nev., preparing to pray when a clear, loud voice came from the Senate gallery.

"Lord Jesus, forgive us, Father, for allowing the prayer of the wicked, which is an abomination in your sight," said a male protester.

The Senate's sergeant at arms was instructed to restore order, but Zed was interrupted again.

"You shall have no other gods before you. … "

Zed, who was invited by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, finally offered his prepared prayer.

"We meditate on the transcendental glory of the deity supreme, who is inside the heart of the Earth, inside the life of the sky and inside the soul of the heaven," he said. "May he stimulate and illuminate our minds."

Police officers arrested the three protesters and charged them with disrupting Congress, a misdemeanor, the Associated Press reported. The male protester told an AP reporter, "we are Christians and patriots" before officers handcuffed them and led them away.

Reid, in remarks from the chamber shortly after the prayer, defended his choice, tying it to the intense debate over the Iraq war.

"If people have any misunderstanding about Indians and Hindus, all they have to do is think of Gandhi," a man "who gave his life for peace," Reid said.

"I think it speaks well of our country that someone representing the faith of about a billion people comes here and can speak in communication with our heavenly Father regarding peace," said Reid.

The AP said Capitol police identified the protesters as Ante Nedlko Pavkovic, Katherine Lynn Pavkovic and Christan Renee Sugar.

Enyart and Colorado Right to life are no longer in the good standing with the national right to life, because of stunts like full page ads against a fellow brother in the fight for righteousness. Dobson is not the enemy, but rogue Christians who have no submission to ecclesiastical authority and deny the sovereignty of God might just turn out to be. It is sad that zeal to abolish abortion has not been accompanied with brotherly love. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins." - 1 Peter 4:8

It is a shame that congress has denied the God that founded this nation and that a few activists think that they are above the law. I would have preferred an alternate prayer offered on the capitol steps.

*SAYS*
Anyone who can be offended by what someone else *SAYS* WRT their religious beliefs is a nincompoop. If someone is going to get their panties in a bunch over what someone does, or does not believe, then they really can’t be considered a rational human being, regardless of the beliefs in question. Now if you get in my face, or pocketbook or workplace and start to tell me what I should (or must) believe then it’s time for whatever level of violence will dissuade the next person form trying same:-)

Wahhh wahh wahh, there’s somebody with a different religion than yours. Deal with it. Move on.

India has a secular government. There is no prayer of any kind.

"Unless, you are an Islamofascist in which case your neighbor becomes an infidel and by religious decree you are required to lop his head off."

Our Constitution stands against Islamist edicts, too. If efforts to establish any religion in government go too far and get into power, that sort of thing can be legally taken care of as it was by our Puritan ancestors in England.

I wonder if the Indian parliament opens with a Christian prayer.

The Indian Government is strictly secular and ALL prayer is prohibitted in the Indian Parliament, includiding Hindu prayers.

If you ignore the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment, as the Left-wing does, you might find that ALL prayers might some day be banned from American public life ..... Which is exactly what the Left wants.

I know I must accept that there will be other religions represented by prayer in the senate or risk being intolerant. But I think I’d rather there be NO prayer than have to listen to a hindu or muslim prayer. If I were a Senator I would have to wear ear plugs or say a Christian prayer to myself.

A CINO (Christian in Name Only.)

I was speaking from an Islamofascist’s point of view. If they don’t worship the same (phony) God that he does, then he is required to lop their heads off.

to persecuting Christians for their beliefs.

Nobody was persecuting Christians here. They were removing disruptive jerks from the visitors' gallery because they were being disruptive jerks. This had nothing to do with their beliefs & everything to do with their bad behavior.

“..you might find that ALL prayers might some day be banned..”

Perhaps all Christian and Jewish prayers, but not Muslim and Hindu prayers.

You should not even put Hindus in the same sentence as Muslims. Christians have more in common with Muslims than do Hindus. Hinduism is the polar opposite of Islam.

Amen. Part of sustaining our religious freedom comes from sustaining the religious freedom of others.

“...Furthermore, the idea of shouting out from the Visitor’s Galley is odious...”

Yeah, the nerve of them, disrupting the world’s greatest deliberative body of thieves and traitors.

What would we come to, if the people’s voices were heard in the Senate chamber?

how far we have fallen from the founding fathers. From a Christian Nation to persecuting Christians for their beliefs.

Oh, stuff it! These people were creating a disruption. They weren't persecuted. They were thrown out for their boorish, sanctimonious behavior. No sympathy from me.

Hindus aren't the bad guys.

It was a generic, nondenominational prayer. The same type of prayer I hear every night at precisely 9:55pm on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Trying to make these people out to be "victims" is pathetic. They were causing a scene. And I'm not surprised that World Nut-job Daily comes to their defense.

Public school education is responsible for ignorance. If we do not learn these things on our own, then truth will never be known. Our Nation is in a sad state in so many ways... and we can start the healing with the 2008 elections.

Maybe that type behavior was part of what influenced the Pope to declare that folks like these disruptor’s aren’t true christians.

Patriots? You must be kidding.

This is the worst in religious intolerence portrayed by sup[posedly Christian-Americans in a long line of such incidents. And as some poster said eleswhere, it's downright rude.

What is it about some Christians who feel abused unless the government supports their particular nrand of religion?
