Cindy Sheehan to Visit Lynchburg

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan - best known for setting up camp near President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas - will be in Lynchburg next Thursday. The Hill City is one of 18 stops on Sheehan's planned Journey for Humanity, which began Tuesday in Crawford and will end with a rally in Central Park on July 27-28.
Just last month, the 50-year-old Californian - drawn into opposition to the Iraq war after her soldier son Casey died in it - had declared that she was retiring from public activism. She cited frustration with the lack of progress of anti-war legislation in Congress.
Then, last week, she not only announced the Crawford-to-New York trip, but said she might run against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Pelosi's California district.
"The idea for this trip just came about on the Fourth of July," said Tiffany Burns, Sheehan's assistant and spokesperson. "We really had to scramble to put it together."
On Sheehan's earlier retirement, Burns said: "I think she just hit a wall. It didn't last long, especially after the commutation of Scooter Libby's sentence (by President Bush last week)."
Tara Dowuonah-Hammond, the local organizer for Sheehan's appearance, met Wednesday with representatives of the Lynchburg Police Department to work out an appropriate venue.
"She's not walking the entire route," said Burns. "We drive between cities, and then we have a symbolic march into town. We're hoping to pick up more people at every stop."
Dowuonah-Hammond said she was looking at Miller Park as a possible site on the afternoon of July 19, but was open to others.
"Cindy Sheehan is my hero," Dowuonah-Hammond said, "although I call her my 'shero.'"
According to Burns, Sheehan is hoping to interact with more diverse audiences by taking her crusade on the road. The Lynchburg stop will be sandwiched in between appearances in Greensboro and Charlottesville.
Sheehan said Tuesday that she would challenge Pelosi as an independent if the incumbent failed to introduce legislation to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney by July 23, the day of the Washington stop on Sheehan's journey.
"You can't bring the troops home if you give George Bush $100 billion to wage this war," she said. "You're not supporting them. You're keeping them in harm's way."
Casey Sheehan was killed in action in Iraq on April 4, 2004. Three months later, Sheehan and some other military families met with Bush at Fort Lewis, Wash.
"I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss," Sheehan said at the time, "and I know he's a man of faith."
By the following summer, however, Sheehan had become disenchanted with Bush's handling of the war and went to Crawford to demand a second meeting with him. When the president declined, Sheehan established Camp Casey, a small community of activists living in tents outside his ranch.
Blunt and plainspoken, Sheehan has stirred strong feelings on both sides of the Iraq debate.
"Despite that, though," said Burns, "we've never seen a lot of hostility against her, demonstrations and so on. Most people seem to understand her reasons for doing what she's doing."
We know her financing comes from the left but does anyone know exactly from whom? Soros? Move On.Org?
This no talent woman apparently has no income of her own.
FYI, moonbats (non-UVA) invading Ch’ville
Gee, cindy...that's what soldiers do, and, yes, unfortunately sometimes they have to die so moonbats like you can continue your spew.
I guess this nuisance is going to be just like jimmah and bj clinton...just won't go away no matter what.
She must need more money since the democrats booted her out.
Funny, I think of her as more of a she-hag. In fact, she's downright she-hagadelic.
get some summer liberty students to protest her in L-burg!
Lynchburg to Charlottesville is along Route 29. Perhaps Ms. Sheehan should be met by Freepers on the way in to town...
I’m guessing she’s going on pass-the-hat tours now.
She said she sold the land in Crawford because she needed money. There wasn’t much profit there.
She must really like Cheney?
I thought she was broke and had to sell her property in Crawford, TX.
So she spent about a week not being an activist? Must’ve missed those crotch inspections by the DC cops....
She has an assistant? I thought we had seen the last of the dingbat! She should be committed!
‘Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan - best known for setting up camp near President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas ‘
Actually, she’s best known for being a crackpot that uses her son’s death as a means for gainful employment.
Richmond PING!
And Hillary is coming to Richmond next week.
I don’t think I can stand it.....
