Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has told NAACP members that it is particularly important to respect the civil rights of Muslim Americans at a time when U.S. troops continue to fight terrorism in the Middle East.
Making Muslims "feel fully included in the work and spirit of America is part of making America a better country," Chertoff said Tuesday night in an address to the civil rights group's 98th annual convention.
Society has "fought too long and too hard for the rights of African Americans to turn our backs on the rights of Muslim Americans," he said

“We are fighting a war against a religion of peace”
. . . Oh I get it now.
Basque sepratists.
He still gets called a terrorist and a terrorist sympathiser, and was attacked for how many Muslims showed up to vote for him -- and that's by his own political party.
I have no idea how many people who profess the Muslim religion have joined our military, but I'm willing to bet it's more than the membership of CAIR.
I found this NY SUN article from last year, Muslims in the Military, it says the military estimates that there are 3700 Muslims.
This Web Page estimates the total number of Muslims in the United States as about 1.5 million, I've seen numbers as high as 5 million from less "objective" sources. Using 1.5 million, that puts the percent of muslims at 1.5/300, or about .5 percent. With about 1 million active duty military, we would expect 5000 muslims -- 3700 is low, but not remarkably low, given the small population to begin with.
Your reply to JMP was right on the money.
People who are actually AFRAID that the American people will rise up to eject a killing cancer from our society would do well to remember that we are children of ‘vigilantes’.
Settlers to a new country rose up against the standing government(British)to insure that they could live as they wished, free from submission to a King.
This country EXISTS because of rebels and those who loved freedom enough to fight those who wanted to rule them- to fight EACH OTHER when loyalty differed.
I believe that defiant backbone still exists.
If it does not, then we participate in our own destruction.
I guess we could just kill everybody who we think might do us harm. But when you are the only person left in America, it will be pretty lonely.
Those nice people who live next door are always so sweet and innocent until they break into your house and kill you and your family. Then your other neighbors get to appear on TV saying “But they were always so quiet and peaceful, I never would have thought”.
Maybe we could just blow them up now, just to be safe.
My point is that to alienate all Muslims because of the actions of some is not in our best interest.
I find no fault with this. I will say that absent a more forceful response from the Muslim community world wide against the terrorists. Absent this response, people in the west will decide at some point that we would be better off without Islam in our midst. And let us be honest with each other. Islam claims the Middle East as their land, their place to be in a sense, and they accept no one setting foot on it to take the land from them or assault their way of life. Well, the West is our land, our place to be. We accept people from all races, religions, and backgrounds. All we require of them in essence is to pay allegiance to their liberty and the liberty of their fellow citizens. And be responsible participants in the building and defense of their selected nation state.
Now if we could just get the Dims to live up to their responsibility we would be there! :D)
we need some gravitas for that job — Cherthof is way too limp-wristed for such a heavy responsibilty and clearly over his head despite being head of security for Brown & Root...
RIP Ladybird
Chertoff should resign from Homeland Security and go back home and become head of the hapless NJ Republican Party, where he can do no harm.
I agree with your position as stated.
Imagine your nice next door neighbors had in their home- and taught their children from- a book that said you and your children were evil and should be killed if you won’t believe as they do.
Imagine those nice next-door neighbors considered that book, and EVERY WORD in it, holy above all else.
How would you feel about them?
Can you honestly say you’d be ok with neighbors like that? Do you think it’s just fine to have neighbors who believe you should be dead- as long as they don’t have the guts to come and kill you?
Should a black family be ok with neighbors who admit to being white supremacists? Should a Jewish family be perfectly comfortable with a skinhead Nazi family as neighbors? How about people who support NAMBLA living next door to you and your children?
Wouldn’t worry you, eh? Never give them a second thought, right?
It’s human nature to reject that which threatens your life.
The Koran does that.
So why is it illogical to suspect- and reject- people who accept and revere that which threatens me?
The Bible says that if my neighbor is committing adultery, I’m supposed to stone them.
Of course, we don’t believe that part of the bible is applicable to our modern times, but believe it or not, a lot of americanized muslims also have a belief that their bible is more guidance than direction.
I’m not really going to defend the Muslim faith, frankly I don’t feel like defending anybody else’s faith. If I knew my neighbor attended a church that preached that form of evil, i’d be appropriately concerned.
But frankly a lot of people have a lot of beliefs that could harm me, directly or indirectly.
Okay, go ahead.
Oops, turned out that was YOUR house next door.
My bad. Oh well, better safe than sorry...
Remember back in 2001, when the U.S. destroyed a building occupied by over 3000 Muslims Remember those Americans, how they were dancing in the streets?
Wait; I got that one wrong! It was a building in the U.S. occupied by 3000 innocent people. Who was dancing in the street again? Oh! That's Right! Muslims; Men, Women, Children. Even some within the U.S.
Now; about vigilantism...
LOL! Luckily I am out of town this week.
Did you have a point to make or did you just think you were being cute?
Are you suggesting American’s didn’t react then, so that’s proof they wouldn’t act in the future?
Are you suggesting that there is no reason for our leaders to be worried about a vigilanty response, so that wouldn’t be their motivation for saying these things?
Are you suggesting Americans didnt react then, so thats proof they wouldnt act in the future?
After 911 there were very few cases of idiots attacking foreign party store owners (the victims tended to be from India).
Even though the MSM says U.S. citizens are the worst people in the world and can’t do anything right we seem to be very merciful.
However; if you are worried about a backlash just remember. If you don’t start nothing...there won’t be nothing.
