McCain clashes with Voinovich [McCain in "serious fight," "brawl" with Voinovich over Iraq]
Politico ^ | 7/10/07

Fresh off a trip to Iraq, a visibly tired McCain lit into the "liberal left" for advocating retreat in Iraq and then went behind closed doors to brawl with a fellow GOP senator over the war.

In what one senator called "the most serious fight that I have seen in my time in the Senate," McCain clashed with Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) over the Arizona senator's assertion that the most dangerous threat facing U.S. troops in Iraq was Al Qaeda members.

Voinovich, who recently urged President Bush to change his war policy now, shot back that Al Qaeda "wouldn't be in Iraq" if American forces weren't there, according to people who witnessed the exchange.

...

"I've seen this movie before from the liberal left in America, who share no responsibility for what happened in Cambodia when we said no while that mission was still in its early stages," McCain said of the secret U.S. invasion of Cambodia in 1970. Congress later blocked President Richard Nixon from further conducting military actions against Cambodia.

"Voinovich is such a dumb $hit cry baby - one wonders how the fool ever fooled the voters in his state..."

When you vote straight "R" ticket, you get both the Elephant and the zoodoo.

Has anyone discussed this with Jim? When I first came here most FReepers were against Bush. They were awful. I left for a number of months...I couldn't stand it. To my surprise when I came back it had changed. It's just awful again...they're all goin' to have to eat there words...hide and watch...

I finally found where all the old FReepers went. Very positive atmosphere...if you'd like to ck it out I'll Freepmail you...the link...

“They will likely do the same with Voinovich unless he stops his highly vocal opposition of the President on his Iraq policy.”

Forget the “if not this,” “if not that” stuff. Voinovich must go. What a complete loser, just imagine the angst we all feel that he has an “R” following his name!!! I moved from Ohio to Florida because of issues like Voinovich.

I learned about it on a old Giuliani thread that got out of hand and ended up pulled.

I wrote a post yesterday to Jim Robinson asking him to post a thread in the breaking news section proclaming once again that Free Republic support the war, the troops, and the Commander in Chief. I did not ask him to ban the defeatists but a post like this one coming from him will go a long way to put down the tide of defeatism that is sweeping Free Republic. I hope he will do it soon.

Maybe he needs to call Hannity’s show again for another tongue lashing.

Well, he had to clean up FR before. That’s why the tone changed drastically. A whole lot of FReepers were banned to do that. Boy, I hope Jim does it. Otherwise...many great FReepers are history...and FR will become a republican DU...

Uh, I think Voinovich is up for reelection next year. I believe he is reading the latest polling that show, IIRC, a 30 % approval of the Iraq war in Ohio. He is either looking to his reelection or voting the wishes of his constituents. I expect to see a lot more of this by Republicans in Congress at the beginning of next year.

"And Hitler never would have taken over Europe if not for the Treaty of Versailles, so we should have given up due to that stupid mistake. Voinovich should change parties and run with Cindy Sheehan."

I just got a fund raising letter today from Rinovich. It said he needed the money because Democrats will attempt to get his Senate seat.

I threw it away, and then emailed him to say that he should get out of the way so a real Conservative can run and maybe keep that seat.

And now I have the most distasteful duty of backing someone I despise because he's right about something that is as deadly serious as the amnesty battle we fought.

Voinovich, who recently urged President Bush to change his war policy now, shot back that Al Qaeda "wouldn't be in Iraq" if American forces weren't there

Weepy Voinovich you MORON!!

you admitted to not prepping yourself for a vote on Bolton even though you had ample time. You cried on the floor that he would endanger your family's future. You later reneged on that when it was too late because you had been shown for the clown you were.

You go on hannity's show, state amendments that had failed were passed, you didn't know what was in the bill, then you turn around and vote amnesty down because again you were embarrassed publicly.

Now, once again, jumping into the moronic fray you cite gibberish Al Quida was never in Iraq. Sure, right. Al Quida was and still is HERE, they were in Afghanistan right next door, but they never were in Iraq.

I used to think my state had the dumbest Senator by far. There was quite heavy competition for the title, especially with Boxer in the running. But I still would have chosen the dimwit that praised Osama for building schools. Now I'm starting to wonder neither of those women can hold the title when you exist.

McCain is right. Listen closely Senator because I don't say that often about McCain. McCain is RIGHT that we need to win this war and maybe if you were educated in anything other then the NYT's editorial page and your poll numbers you'd understand why.

I blame a lot of this "Maverick-itis" on McCain, they saw the love he got and wanted to be a part of it. He helped weaken this party because of his selfishness, so it is only right he be part of the solution and help fix some of the damage he caused by stripping them of the white flags they are so eager to toss. if he can do that, I still wouldn't vote for him, but at least maybe one time on one issue I could understand why so many people once respected this man. And maybe, just maybe, I might finally believe something animates Mccain outside himself that is of benefit to America.

Yes, I'm calling the Senator to urge him to continue to battle these poll jumping soulless glory hounds because he's doing the right thing. First time, and probably won't happen beyond this, Mccain has or will get a call from me that isn't hostile toward him.

And McConnell? Alexander? Don't think I didn't read your names in there. Let me remind you Alexander the base cares about three things. Judges. Amnesty. The WOT. You won't be forgoven for crossing any of the three. McConnell, you screwed us on amnesty. I have been fully prepared to let you lose next year and take delight when it happens. Just as i did Chafee and deWine. I'm not sure the people in your state have been of the same mind, but i suspct more will be if you screw the troops by supporting that timetable. One thing to screw the American people, you will just be amplifying the reasons why we should jettison you if you go against the men and women with more guts and honor then you've ever possessed.
