Senior U.S. intelligence officials tell ABC News new intelligence from Afghanistan suggests a small al Qaeda cell is on its way to the United States, or may already be here.
The White House has convened an urgent multi-agency meeting for Thursday afternoon to deal with the new threat.
Top intelligence and law enforcement officials have been told to assemble in the Situation Room to report on:
--what steps can be taken to minimize or counter the threat,
--and what steps are being taken to harden security for government buildings and personnel.
"It suggests they have information that the cell or cells coming this direction want to attack a government facility," Brad Garrett, a former FBI agent and ABC News consultant, said.
Law enforcement officials say the recent failed attacks in London have provided important new clues about possible tactics.
And officials say the London attackers use of the Internet left important clues that are being used to decode other e-mails that had initially been deemed unimportant but are now taking on new significance.

Good!
Time to get this jihad on...
Shall I call the muzzies in the ‘hood and tell them to start packing...
That was the day I lost all respect for the media.
And we’ll continue to allow mosques and muslim schools to be built on our soil.....
Not really. I think a terrible attack on US soil at this point will more likely weaken the president more.
thank you for the ping
That could very well be what Al Qaida is thinking.
“They will likely do NOTHING to stir the emotions of the American people until either we withdraw from Iraq...or after the next election.”
You are exactly right. They will wait until the libs are in. Then they will tell them what to do.
It’s a distinct possibility.
Isn’t THAT the truth!!!!
Without a doubt. I believe we have not been attacked since 9-11 because the terrorists realize our President will respond with strong purpose. I truly believe Al Qaeda is scared of Bush. Al Qaeda has suffered 6 years of devastating defeats and are not willing to escalate with attacks against the United States homeland while Bush is in office.
But they will probe a new administration. I worry about 2009 and pray Al Qaeda does not have anything nuclear nor for the U.S. to be so stupid as to elect a Democrat.
I believe a Republican will be deterrence enough to keep Al Qaeda from trying anything too serious. But a Democrat, Al Qaeda will come after our throat because I believe Al Qaeda has no respect for Democrats and has already concluded they are weak and will cower in the face of a major terrorist attack.
If a Democrat is elected in '08 Al Qaeda will try a knock out blow the following year.
but i thought its only a bumper sticker
Sounds logical to me. They know the President’s and Congress’s poll numbers are down. I can see them doing a hit now.
Bingo... I'd like to believe that this news item reflects just a tiny portion of a well-planned-and-executed disinformation campaign designed to ferret out some actionable intelligence about AQ sleeper cells by rattling some cages and getting them to trip up and reveal their locations or intent, but I've seen too much government bungling to place much faith in that being the case...
You pretty much summed up my feelings on the subject.
This country is going to be hit again, and hard. As per usual, the traitorous Democrats would probably escape without blame. I often wonder about how great an attack it would take to really wake us up. Obviously, 9-11 wasn’t nearly enough. We are far too removed from the survival instinct.
Am I the only one who is shocked that this is considered news?
..and why do we still let people from the Mid East into this country at all? Are we THAT dumb or THAT suicidal ? I forgot which one it was.
and the MSM has removed all evidence of 9/11 from the airwaves. It’s just a number now ... 9/11 ..don’t REALLY mean much to most anymore.
