CNN: Under pressure, White House predicts 'new way' in Iraq ( President Bush Press Conf 1:45 EST)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- As President Bush faces GOP pressure to change his war strategy, the White House announced Tuesday that an upcoming progress report will result in "the beginning of a new way" in Iraq.

White House spokesman Snow: "Everybody says, 'We want to do it a new way.' We agree. It's now started."

Six months after announcing an increase of nearly 30,000 U.S. troops that became known as the "surge," Bush is scheduled to appear at a town meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday where he's expected to push for a "post-surge" phase of the four-year war, senior officials told CNN.

However, senior administration officials said that the Bush administration does not plan to make any major changes in its war strategy despite increased calls from Republican lawmakers to begin a drawdown of U.S. troops in Iraq.

Bush made a brief statement on Iraq early in his Cleveland visit.

"And finally, I'm going to spend some time talking about the war on terror and our need to succeed in Iraq. And I'm going to remind the people in the audience today that troop levels will be decided by our commanders on the ground, not by political figures in Washington, D.C., and that we've got a plan to lead to victory.

"And I fully understand that this is a difficult war, and it's hard on the American people. But I will once again explain the consequences of failure to the American people, and I'll explain the consequences of success, as well," he said.

I’m frankly tired of hearing “new way”. More shock and awe speaks a lot louder particularly if applied on the Iranians.

The president is surely on his own now.

He has alienated just about everyone group in the country.

“New Way” may well translate into “No Way.”

The White House has done a positively lousy job of building and maintaining support for the war.

I could never figure out why this WH never fights back against its opponents. It just takes it over and over again on everything.

Man oh man. I’d hate to be Tony Snow right now.

I am actually just ready for this Iraqi situation to be resolved one way or another, and I am a Bushbot! Something is not working and we are going to have to either bomb the hell out of them or just come home at this point. Even if we do bring some troops home we will always need to keep some there for reinforcements.

It's a crying shame that the biggest wound to the War in Iraq came when the President decided to piss away whatever political captital he had left on the Amnesty Bill.

Now the RINO Senate sob sisters are doing Reid's dirty work for him.

Talk about too little too late. Where were you 3 years ago? Or 2 years ago? Or a year ago? Or a few months ago when you squandered what little political capital you had left on that absurd amnesty bill?

1 Samuel 15 (New International Version)

2 This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.' "

God knew how to fight a war against a relentless enemy.

Hoo-rah.

I'm starting to think that people in this country believe that everything will go back to normal once Bush is out of office. It's just beginning folks and the liberals and weak republicans will be to blame.

I’m frankly tired of hearing “new way”.

I'm frankly tired of hearing people saying they are tired of the war on terror in Iraq.

Americans know they have to stay in Iraq.

There is no way other to deal with the present situation.

Even if you don’t like it.

You have to stay. If you don’t, Iran will be tommorow’s North Korea, with islam added.

And islam added means that they won’t only have the bomb.

They will use it.

The president earlier today:

Ernest, I’m not sure we can even handle short-term bloody conflicts. A huge portion of the country wants to fight a war without hurting anybody. Another large portion wants to punish the troops if thei DO hurt somebody.

And our President—if the rumors the media is spreading are true, he’s going to pull out of Iraq anyway. So now I have to ask, if we aren’t in it to win it, why were we there in the first place? I hope those rumors prove untrue, it will just about complete my recovery from being a BushBot.

I’ll be ready to withdraw from Iraq after about 50-60 years. Why would we want to leave now when it’s been like flypaper for the al-Qaedas of the world?

The best we can hope for now is by the end of the "Surge" we buy time, about a year, for Iraq to get it's collective ass together to prevent a jihadist 'regroup'.

The best case scenario is that Iran and their surrogates overplay their hand this summer striking out everywhere allowing us and Isreal to pulverize Iran and Syria.

But as Winston Churchill once said, "The enemy seldom does what you most want them to do."
