Woman, 70, Bloody nose for having a dry lawn

'He really abused me,' resident says after arrest by Orem police officer

OREM - Two days after Independence Day, 70-year-old Betty Perry experienced an ordeal she said shouldn't be happening in America.

The retired military and U.S. government employee answered the door at her home Friday morning to talk with a police officer about her bone-dry lawn and ended up getting arrested and suffering a bloody nose. "What have I done?" she asked. "I'm old now. I can't believe this."

The Orem police officer, as yet unnamed by city officials, cited Perry for violating a city ordinance with her "sadly neglected and dying landscape," which resembles dry hay.

When Perry refused to give her name and tried to walk inside to call her son, the officer tried to arrest her, police say. According to a police news release, while she was struggling, she tripped and fell on her doorstop, cutting open the bridge of her nose. But Perry maintains the officer split her nose when he hit her with the set of handcuffs he was trying to restrain her with.

"As far as I'm concerned, he really abused me - he brutally abused me," Perry said. "For what?" The officer called for backup, because he was driving a truck, and the now-handcuffed Perry was taken to a holding facility in Orem. She was not given water or allowed to wash her hands or call her son, she said.

"After being booked, supervisors became aware of the circumstances and immediately released the woman and returned her to her home on the basis that there were other options available to handle this situation besides making an arrest and holding the woman in jail," Orem police Lt. Doug Edwards wrote in the news release.

Whether the woman here had an attitude is irrelevant to the situation as she can't arrest or handcuff the officer. The woman has no authority here, the LEO has all the authority here and he abused it. He arrested a woman merely because, in his opinion, she wasn't compliant enough. The fact that you don't seem to understand the difference here is disturbing.

Agreed. That this could happen in this country is troubling at best.

Uncle Guys! I’m sorry. I don’t think most cops are out of control. I guess it’s a life experience thing. Now if we were talking about judges..:’)

If my grass is over 6 “ tall they mow it for me and send me a bill. $100 for a teeny tiny front lawn... I also am not allowed to have an A/C unit unless I take it out in the winter. Same thing for an outside cover (like a tarp over the back porch). My cats must be on a leash. I must get permission to change the layout of my fence or put up new numbers on the front my house. I cannot stain my fence any darker than its “natural color” (gray). I cannot have more than one of the same plant in a row or it is a “natural fence”. My trash cans cannot be seen from the street except on trash day. I cannot cut down the cherry tree in my front yard. The rules go on and on and on... I am, however, allowed to let my lawn “die back to it’s natural state” in the summer.... LOL!

...I guess what it really comes down to is that I'm surprised to find anyone who thinks that is acceptable for the state to be this involved in a citizen's landscaping to be found here on Free Republic.

I was going to say "Welcome to FreeRepublic", but it  seems you've been here for a while. ;-)

I have to ask you, though: How consistent are you on this issue? You pointed out that the cop was black and the man he shot was white. Are you just as outraged when it’s vice-versa? Just curious.

I don't like it when it's either way.
Recent events have made me more sensitive to the MSM's covering up of crimes committed by blacks against whites - such as the difference in the coverage between the boys from Duke and say the rape/torture/double-murder in Tennessee.

Imagine if the races were reversed in this case.
You would see this on every single channel.
South LA would explode.
Jesse and Al would be on every channel, etc.

Thank you for giving me that information. Papers never give you the ‘other side of the story,’ and now you have. I appreciate it so much.

Thanks for the warning. It's always good to know who's carrying pruning shears!

When we moved in, the City Fathers told us to plant trees and lawn. We did so. Now, after approving unrestricted growth and hundreds of new houses, they have changed their tune: plant desert plants, use very little water on them and change the lawn into a rock garden. Lawmakers are are mentally defective!

Perhaps I should expand my profile. Now that you mention the gardening/shears connection, I probably should try to soften my image a bit. A photo of my favourite revolver, for example, might make me seem more human. :)

I cannot argue against that. The double standard enrages me to no end. Of course, I'm also irked when conservatives show a double standard because I think we're better than that. But, you were consistent. Thank you.

“What hath bad cops wrought?”

Yes, Orem is a nice place. Bad cops are bad cops. Sometimes, though, they continue to be bad because the people (we the people) let them get away with it. If this cop is not fired the good people of Orem need to start replacing those who can effect that kind of justice.

Gotcha.
I don’t worry about PC, myself.
I respect people of every race.
I have dated people of every race, so it’s not just BS.

I see that European (white) Christians are legitimate targets around the world, for criticism, discrimination, outright theft and worst of all, violence.

Which demonstrates that age-old saying: An armed internet forum is a polite internet forum.
