In pictures: Live Earth concerts

The series of Live Earth concerts, organised in nine cities to raise awareness of climate change issues, began in Sydney.

Among those playing in Sydney were rockers Wolfmother, with the reformed Crowded House rounding off the show.

Taking part in Live Earth was "the least we can do at this point in the planet's history", said Neil Finn of Crowded House

[snip]
Live Earth was inspired by former US Vice-President Al Gore, who appeared as a hologram as the Tokyo gig began.

In Tokyo local favourites - such as rockers Rize - shared the bill with overseas acts including Linkin Park.

Thousands of fans have also gathered in Shanghai to see artists including Anthony Wong and Sarah Brightman.

Toni Colette, star of Muriel's Wedding, played in Sydney with The Finish, a band which also features her husband.

Japanese singer Ayaka urged fans to change their daily habits as a first step to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

Organisers hope the event will have an audience of up to two billion people on television, on radio and online.

Later Madonna will appear at London's Wembley Stadium, with The Police, Kanye West and Bon Jovi due in New Jersey.

Its amazing how the people who are held up as so much more sophisticated and smarter and worldly than the rest of us always so easily fall for the latest leftwing fad.

I'd laugh if it wasn't so pathetic.

“Japanese singer Ayaka urged fans to change their daily habits as a first step to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.”

And as a result, they all walked home.

That pic of algore’s hologram reminds me of ‘1984’.

I think in couple months we’ll probably see some cooling as a result of these brave people’s efforts. I do expect it to cool down a bit come the later part of September into October and then with the onset of Winter it should be downright tolerable. These people are going to make a difference. I just hope they don’t overdo it and give us a harsh winter here in the midwest.

Its amazing how the people who are held up as so much more sophisticated and smarter and worldly than the rest of us always so easily fall for the latest leftwing fad.

What they seem to fall for is a naive desire to believe that they recognize the problem, and by feeling the pain they can somehow be part of the solution - even if they're contributing to what they believe is the problem. The "SOS" laser picture says it all.
