Proposed OSHA Regulation Threatens Firearm and Ammunition Industry
Website ^ | 7/1/2007 | National Shooting Sports Foundation

Posted on 07/02/2007 11:11:44 PM PDT by Revtwo

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), is proposing a regulatory rule affecting the manufacturing, transportation and storage of small arms ammunition, primers and smokeless propellants.

As written, the proposed rule would force the closure of nearly all ammunition manufacturers and force the cost of small arms ammunition to skyrocket beyond what the market could bear—essentially collapsing our industry.

This is not an exaggeration. The cost to comply with the proposed rule for the ammunition industry, including manufacturer, wholesale distributors and retailers, will be massive and easily exceed $100 million. For example, ammunition and smokeless propellant manufacturers would have to shut down and evacuate a factory when a thunderstorm approached and customers would not be allowed within 50 feet of any ammunition (displayed or otherwise stored) without first being searched for matches or lighters.

MORE fall-out from the “War on Terror”.

Instead of going after the REAL problem - MUSLIMS, they CONTINUE to drone on and on about unaffiliated, mysterious “terrorists, although Icelanders or Buddhist monks were doing this. Rarely they allow themselves to use “Islamofascist or Radical Islamists.

In reality its MUSLIMS - clear and simple. ALL of them and their VICIOUS cock-a-mamie cult. If they weren’t here, brainless nitwits like these in government agencies would be wasting their time and our money on other projects less harmful to the common good.

But once again, like frisking old Norweigan-American ladies from Minnesota, instead of ALL Muslims, they subject ALL of us to senselss indignities while overlooking the real problem.

Even FDR would be amazed. TR and Washington would never have tolerated it - AND NEITHER SHOULD WE!!!

The Left wants to pass “Sweeping gun control” which amounts to a gun ban.

Please take the time to read the OSHA proposal.

It isn’t at all what this article says it is.

Or at least take the time to read some of the remarks by sig and and a couple others.

In reality this seems to be a good thing overall.

“This is not an exaggeration.”

Yes. It is.

You claim “For example, ammunition and smokeless propellant manufacturers would have to shut down and evacuate a factory when a thunderstorm approached...”

When I downloaded the pdf of the proposed rule, I searched for the word thunderstorm. It doesn’t appear in the proposed rule.

When I searched for lightning, what came up was a requirement to install lightning protection systems to manage stray currents produced by lightning. Seems reasonable to me.

And further, OSHA is specifically requesting input on its requirement about 50 feet of separation. It recognizes that it may not be feasible. From the preamble to the proposed rule itself:

“Issue #4: OSHA seeks specific
comments on the impact proposed
paragraph (c)(3)(iii) would have on the
storage and retail sale of small arms
ammunition, small arms primers, and
smokeless propellants. Do open flames,
matches, or spark producing devices
create a hazard when located within 50
feet of small arms ammunition, small
arms primers, or smokeless propellants,
or facilities containing these products?
Can employers involved in the storage
or retail sale of small arms ammunition,
small arms primers, or smokeless
propellants prevent all open flames,
matches, or spark producing devices
from coming within 50 feet of these
products or facilities containing these
products? If not, why not? Should
proposed paragraph (c)(3)(iii) use a
protective distance other than 50 feet
and, if so, what distance should it be
and why? Should OSHA exclude small
arms ammunition, small arms primers,
and smokeless propellants from the
requirements of proposed paragraph
(c)(3)(iii)?”

As far as the cost impact, when I read the preliminary economic analysis in 71 FR 18828 to 18833, it seems reasonable when spread over the entire industry.

I’ll get worried when the workers at these companies that have to put up with risks daily complain.

But if you have concerns, please do comment. It’s what this process is all about. Instructions on how to comment and the deadline (July 12, 2007) are presented on 71 FR 18792. But please read the proposed rule carefully and make sure your comment is based in fact (not hyperbole) and is logical and persuasive.

I’m not talking about storage or transport, I am talking about the carrying of the ammo during manuvers/combat. Just like cops on patrol.

Sometimes exaggerations are really lies.

The article is full of baseless assertions and has all the credibility of Rosie regarding gun control issues.

OSHA doesn’t regulate military unique operations.

And I’ve never seen the OSHA standard that applies to how cops conduct patrols.

Since ATF has all the authority why is OSHA doing anything?

I realize that OSHA doesn’t regulate the military, but the military does adhere to OSHA standards by choice.

I am sure that there are OSHA standards that do apply to cops even when they are on patrol. I bet that there are OSHA standards that apply during firearms training, yearly evals, etc. I bet that cops are not exempt from OSHA.

NOPE. it's just MORE of the "nanny-state mentality". those !@#$%^&* just want to control everything/everybody.

that's ONE reason that i favor political/intellectual/social/financial separation from the north. i just want the "fat bureaucrats" to GO AWAY, get out of our church/schools/affairs/business/bedrooms/LIVES & leave us ALONE.

i want the central government to do nothing either FOR me or TO me. instead i just want it to GO AWAY. period. end of story.

I prefer to say America is the land of the sheep and home of the slaves.
