Device explodes at Disney World

Orlando - Authorities say a device similar to a pipe bomb has exploded in a rubbish bin at a remote Walt Disney World parking lot.

No one was injured and no serious damage was reported in what officials believe was an isolated incident.

Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said an employee heard a loud noise and saw white smoke coming from the can near the downtown Disney shopping and entertainment district.

Beary said: "We've recovered a very crude, homemade, low-level device. Because of the time and location of the event, we do not believe this incident was designed to cause significant property damage or injury. We also believe this is an isolated incident."

Beary said investigators were still trying to determine what the device was made of, but "end caps" - typical of pipe bombs - were found at the scene.

Beary said federal authorities had also looked into the incident.

He said authorities were on high alert because of the airport attack in Scotland and attempted car bombings in London, combined with the July Fourth holiday this week.

I have no doubt that the White House has had plenty of private conversations with the Saudis

Okay, now the meaning of that previous post is clear.

But, do you really think the Saudi government has the means to convince Al Qaida not to attack us again? And that, in the process, any such threat of ours wouldn't leak out?

As an aside, I went to a weeklong school there. Not just the “behind the scenes tour,” but a full 40-60 hours working with the staff, talking to the staff, etc.

It took all of the fun out of Disney. What a controlled and manipulated environment.

I can never go back there and enjoy myself.

Many a delightful game of mini-golf was played there, with parents’ eyes rolling in the background. Haven’t seen the place since ‘81 but it was annual entertainment for much of my childhood.

I tend to take bombs seriously.

It was either one of three things.

#1. Some AH
#2. A poorly executed terrorist act. (remember the AH who flew the light aircraft into the building in Tampa after he wrote a note pledging his love for OBL.
#3. A gang deal/warning. There has been a very heavy LEO presence at Pleasure Island, the night club part of WDW for about two weekends. This was in response to gangs gathering there in their “uniforms” of hoodies and jeans down around their arse and hassling the tourists. Cops are taking no nonsense from the hoods, as they know word would spread very quickly, good or bad.

"This is a common childhood prank."

I think you're right.

Between the ages of about 14 and 18 almost anything can happen.

And often does!

Oh, that conversation could certainly be held.

“We wouldn’t want to...”
“Populace would demand something....”
“Where would it end if we didn’t.....
“Your Grandfather would understand....”

Probably not Mecca, but my vote would be for Bandar Abbas. or possible Khomein.

Years ago I had a kid blow the snots out of a big above-ground pool in my back yard one Halloween. It was a steel pipe bomb, containing what appeared to be a cylindrical, extruded powder, based on a few remaining unburned grains. Fortunately no kids were in the back yard at the time. I never found a piece of shrapnel much bigger than a half-dollar. Kids do these things... despite the danger.

I don't know. If I were running things I would just tell the Saudis what would happen if there was another 9/11 and let it go at that. They know full well that we know they are funding the terrorist training camps. If they can't manage to rein in their own cultivated terrorists - then they'd pay the price when the time came.

I’ve been following the gang activity at Disney - I tend to think that’s what this was. It’s getting gang-ugly around here lately.

Chertoff says we are safe...nuffin to worry about.

Yeah, and I saw his lips saying they have worked hard to secure the borders, too. Well, THAT's a relief!
