With the Senate immigration bill dead and buried, political activists say their next battle will be at the ballot box, where Republicans risk losing hard-earned votes among Hispanic immigrants.
Lawmakers dealt a lethal blow to the immigration bill Thursday, making it highly unlikely Congress will enact any broad changes in immigration law until well after the presidential election in 2008. As policy analysts study the fallout, some say the defeat could prompt immigrants the nation's fastest growing group of new voters to swing toward Democratic candidates.
Democrats could gain more Hispanic voters, who make up the nation's largest and fastest growing minority. Except for Cuban-Americans, the nation's Hispanics traditionally have voted for Democrats, but many were swayed toward President Bush in 2004, when he received a landmark 40 percent of the Hispanic vote.
With the immigration bill's collapse, Republicans could lose such gains, experts said.

That means the vast majority of Democrats, 70% of these Marxists, voted to end debate on a bill that had not been fully debated, that 80% of the American people were against, and that would give Amnesty to 20 million illegals and their families back in the 3rd world.
Republicans almost had enough votes to stop this bill if not for the liberal democrats disguised as Republicans like Lott, McCain,Graham , Hagel, Specter et al.
Hispanics who were born in the U.S. don’t want a flood of 3rd world immigrants coming to the U.S. to take their jobs just as other Americans don’t want that either.
The liberal media keeps telling us we need floods of immigrants legal and illegal to help our economy . Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes maybe in 1800 when we had a whole continent to fill up we needed immigrants but someone should tell the media that we have 300 million people in the U.S. already and the continent is full.
Actually worker shortages (less people) would benefit any country. Business would have to pay workers more. Businesses would innovate and invest in technology and capital that would make businesses more productive ( that is the only way living standards rise). So more immigrants have the opposite effect lower wages decreased capital investment, lower living standards etc.
Hispanic Americans as well as other Americans don't want hundreds of millions of 3rd world immigrants coming to America to transform the U.S. into a 3rd world socialist hell hole, Mexico, or India where there is plenty of cheap labor.
The best the Bush/Rove strategy has ever done among Hispanics has been about a 60/40 split, the wrong way.
Northern Mexicans are the majority among immigrants to Texas, historically, and it was among them that Bush, while governor, got a 40% split. Mexicans in Arizona, California, Illinois, etc., are another story. Those in California in particular are from the Mexican interior and southern Mexico and lean PRD at home and very socialist/Aztlanist here in the States.
Bush gets, in Texas, about a 50/50 split among Central and South Americans by pronounced catering, sponsorship of Hispanic political candidates, and speaking Spanish while pointing to Jorge P. Bush. His split among Mexicans and Chicanos has never been better than 30% -- Tejano Democrats enjoy strong voter loyalty and discipline, and new arrivals from Mexico are expected to continue and reinforce their strength -- in fact, they expect to be able to take over the state of Texas in about four years, and exclude Republicans from statewide office permanently thereafter. The racists among them have confidently predicted they'll be able to suppress the white vote by shutting out white candidates in the primaries, and eventually exclude whites as a group from holding office. Thus Tatcho Mindiola, a Tejano Democratic consultant and University of Houston political scientist, in a piece he wrote for the now-defunct daily Houston Post back in 1994 about vote suppression.
George W. Bush might as well be trying to woo Jewish voters by pointing out his Palestinian grandparents and his fluency in Jordanian-accented Arabic, as "credentials" in dealing with Middle Eastern matters and building peace!
I don’t think the legal hispanic voters will agree; especially since the illegal hispanics cannot vote. Also, the illegals should be back in their own countries by the time the election comes around.
We shouldn’t forget that Cubans are here because of Castro and that Puerto Ricans are American citizens. They were made citizens by Congress in 1917. The United States took control of Puerto Rico in the Spanish-American War.
These groups need to understand they are not the illegal immigrants that people are angry about. I speak seriously
because some Puerto Ricans-Cubans are either confused by or could be confused by the debate going on and propaganda in favor of illegal immigration.
The largest and fastest growing UNION is SEIU and they are chock full of immigrant janitors, housekeepers and healthcare workers, and have been pouring million$ in to the DNC. Oh how nice it would be to assimilate 12-20 million dues paying members!"That is true. But you don't know how many times I've heard in the liberal media how unions were so against this Amnesty bill. Many parroted that lie on this site many times. I've debated several people on this site who bought that lie from the media. That union, La Raza, and Soros were the among the top funders of lobbyists who were pressuring Congress into passing this Amnesty bill.
I never said Puerto Ricans weren't legally allowed to vote.
As for Cubans being here because of Castro, if they're here legally, as I indicated, they're fine with me. If they're here illegally, they're breaking the law.
As I said, I do not make sweeping generalizations about "Hispanics"--I made a clear indication that those who were LEGAL IMMIGRANTS were fine, and those here illegally are the ones I have a problem with. The subject of the thread is Hispanic immigrants; if not, I'd have said "illegal immigrants of whatever ethnicity."
If the total of eligible hispanic voters in 2004 was a mere 6% of the national total, the White House and RNC supposed 'strategery' and invective hurled at the conservative base opposing the so called Comprehensive Amnesty Reform makes even less sense.
What did the White House and RNC expect to pick 2.5% to 3% max of national voters?
Stupid. stupid, stupid move.

Study finds gap in Hispanic growth, voters
WASHINGTON (AP) The rapid increase of the Hispanic population in the United States is not resulting in a comparable growth in political clout, a new study found. Hispanics accounted for half the growth in the U.S. between 2000 and 2004, but only a tenth of the growth in votes, according to an analysis of Census data by the Pew Hispanic Center.
The population of Hispanics increased by 5.7 million over those four years, but only 2.1 million of those were eligible to vote. The number of Hispanic voters increased by only 1.4 million.
One reason for the gap: A high percentage of Hispanics are either too young to vote or are ineligible because they are not citizens.
The Hispanic share of the electorate was up slightly in 2004 to 6%, while the share of the population increased from 12.8% in 2000 to 14.3% in 2004.
About 18% of the Hispanic population citizens and non-citizens went to the polls in 2004, compared with 51% of all whites and 39% of all blacks, according to the Pew report.
Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry won the Hispanic vote in 2004, but President Bush got more than 40% of those votes, which had been a goal of his campaign.
Yet another “Ohh, you’ll pay at the polls” MSM article, to that sort of thing it should be said “We enforce the law, whether that is popular or not, the American People expect us to do that and we didn’t and cannot support such obvious pandering to allow the laws of the land to violated because it is politically expedient”
This sort of thing is the exact reason “why” Republicans are the party of law and order, we should not compromise principles to pander for votes...ever.

The criticism was that Bush didn’t go far enough.
“With the Senate immigration bill dead and buried, political activists say their next battle will be at the ballot box, where Republicans risk losing hard-earned bought votes among Hispanic immigrants.”
Death of the Senate Bill issues, IMO, is only temporary, will be THE most important ‘08 issue, and I believe that the winner of the primary and 2008 elections will be the Republican candidate who’s previous proven record and clearest ‘no amnesty’ message, reflect the STRONGEST PRO BORDER SECURITY, ANTI-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND ANTI-CFR/NAU position. Therefore, that candidate IMO, can NOT and must NOT be another CFRer or NAFTApusher.
CFRers:
Fred Thompson
Rudy Giuliani
John McCain
Mitt Romney
Jim Gilmore
Newt Gingrich
Hillary Clinton
Barack Obama
John Edwards
Joe Biden
Chris Dodd
Bill Richardson
If you are aware of others, please let me know.;
The GOP DID kill this legislation. 37 Republicans voted No.
The Democrat propaganda machine will not be making the distinctions you do, but will try to make everyone Hispanic think they are the target of “racism.”
Of course, I agree with you in supporting legal immigrants and opposing illegal ones.
What I am up against is the knowledge that some Hispanic voters (evangelical Puerto Rican) in my area are really confused by the immigration issue and I’m convinced its because the left is making it out as a “racism” thing against Hispanics.
I’ve had to explain to Puerto Rican people that they are American citizens and are not a part of this issue. These people are registered Republican and vote Republican. Abortion and gay marriage have moved them squarely into the GOP. I would like it to stay that way.
I think the Cubans are also susceptible to this “racism” thing. It really P.O.’ed me when the president spoke about “diversity” and illegal immigration some weeks ago. It was the liberal line all the way and that line could confuse voters and keep them home or voting for Democrats in 2008.
However many unions were pushing congress to pass this Amnesty bill and what they wanted mainly was Amnesty for 20 million illegals.
Here is what the other poster on this thread said:
The largest and fastest growing UNION is SEIU and they are chock full of immigrant janitors, housekeepers and healthcare workers, and have been pouring million$ in to the DNC. Oh how nice it would be to assimilate 12-20 million dues paying members!"
That's true.
And many other unions like the United Farm Workers were paying lobbyists to pressure congress into passing this Amnesty bill. And Democrats listened 70% of Democrats Senators voted for Amnesty (Cloture).
From Michelle Malkin's site. Look at all the unions on that list and that is not a complete list:
To push the current legislation under consideration, La Raza have joined a host of groups under one banner called the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Founded in 2003, this group has received $7 million from Atlantic Philanthropies, a multibillion dollar foundation led by Gare LaMarche, the former vice president and director of U.S. programs for George Soros' Open Society Institute.
According to insiders, the National Council of La Raza had "virtual veto power" over the most recent Senate immigration proposal. These are the folks pushing immigration policy in America.
Who is the "Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform?" An umbrella group for every major pro-open borders outfit--many of which receive generous taxpayer subsidies. From a March 2007 press release:
A coalition of local immigrant advocates, national policy groups, labor unions, faith-based groups, and ethnic organizations have come together under the umbrella of the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CCIR) to mount an unprecedented nationwide campaign to support passage of workable comprehensive immigration reform legislation in Congress this year
Just a few or these groups are: ACORN, Asian American Justice Center, Center for American Progress, Center for Community Change, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC), Denver Area Labor Federation, El Centro, Inc., El Pueblo, Hate Free Zone, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform, LA County Federation of Labor, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, LULAC, Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, MALDEF, NAACP, NAKASEC, NALACC, National Capital Immigrant Coalition, National Council of La Raza, National Immigration Forum, National Immigration Law Center, Nebraska Appleseed, New York Immigration Coalition, PCUN/CAUSA, SEIU, SEIU 32BJ, SEIU Florida Healthcare Union, Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, UNITE HERE, UNITE HERE Local 226 Las Vegas, UNITE HERE New Jersey State Council, United Farm Workers, United Methodist Church - General Board of Church and Society.
Getting here illegally is easy. Unbelieveably Secretary Chertoff, of the Ministery of the Interior (Homeland Security) has admitted what was already crystal clear: that “we cannot enforce the laws.”
This government should promptly resign. Notice that his remarks have been ignored by the MSM.
This is more of a wishful thinking editorial than even a mildly objective or truthful article. What BS.
I do not think the GOP is going to lose either State on this issue.
When those charged with enforcing the law either refuse to enforce the law or say enforcing the law can’t be done, that government is broken, and ‘agreed’ that government should resign. Get out of that chair chertoff!
