Threat Matrix: July 2007

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

Excellent points.

Many folks have been praying these recent weeks seriously toward trying to prevent another Israeli war.

Israel may be threatened within a hair’s breadth of it’s existence . . . IF SO

God Almighty will show HIMSELF MIGHTY in her behalf.

Could get interesting.

“US, Poland Ignore Russian Threats”

“US, Poland Ignore Russian Threats”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WARSAW, Poland, July 24—Poland and US remain undeterred by Russian opposition to Washington’s plans to build a missile defense system in eastern Europe, the chief Polish negotiator said Tuesday.

Deputy Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said Russia had shown a determination to block the project, most recently by suspending its participation in a key European arms control treaty.

In a phone interview with The Associated Press, Waszczykowski said the Polish President Lech Kaczynski and US President George W. Bush discussed their concerns over Russia’s move during their meeting in Washington last week and resolved not to be swayed by it.”

Thank you so much for the compliment, Cindy. I greatly appreciate it! [Sometimes I wish I was blissfully ignorant of it all, though. I’m sure most who frequent the Threat Matrix understand perfectly well what I mean by this! Still, I wouldn’t want to be one of the “uninformed masses” as they will eventually be in for a very rude awakening... I have to thank you and the others on this thread for the knowledge I’ve gained here at FR for the last — soon to be — 7 years! (o: My sincere gratitude goes to all of you here on the TM threads, and all the other wonderful FReepers who diligently work to inform and educate others!]

TSA: Terrorists May Be Conducting Preattack Security Probes

POSTED: 4:23 pm EDT July 24, 2007 UPDATED: 4:36 pm EDT July 24, 2007 In a new intelligence bulletin obtained by NBC News, the Transportation Security Administration is warning law-enforcement and airport officials that terrorists “may be” conducting “preattack security probes” at U.S. airports.

The unclassified bulletin, dated July 20 and marked “For Official Use Only,” is titled “Incidents at U.S. Airports May Suggest Possible Pre-Attack Probing.”

“A surge in recent suspicious incidents at U.S. airports may indicate terrorists are conducting pre-attack security probes and ‘dry runs’ similar to dress rehearsals,” the intelligence bulletin states. “Past terrorist attacks and plots show that such testing generally indicates attacks will soon follow, according to a joint FBI and Homeland Security assessment.”

The report says that TSA personnel have intercepted items at U.S. airports “resembling improvised explosive device (IED) components,” including wires, switches, pipes and “dense clay-like substances” from September 2006 to date.

The items were confiscated at airports in San Diego, Milwaukee, Houston and Baltimore. In two of the four incidents, blocks of processed cheese were connected to wires and an electrical switch, or the cheese was taped to a bag holding a cell-phone charger.

A U.S. law enforcement official cautions NBC News that the new bulletin is an analysis of possible suspicious behavior at U.S. airports and not at all a sure sign of terrorists at work. The bulletin is just one of a stream of intelligence reports constantly churned out by TSA, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and other U.S. agencies.

Suicide car bomb kills 26 at Iraq children’s hospital

Jihad against sick children in a mostly Shi’ite town. Will this attack provoke any moral outrage from Sunni Muslim states? From Agence France-Presse:

HILLA, Iraq (AFP) - A suicide car bomb exploded across the street from a children’s hospital in the Iraqi city of Hilla on Tuesday, killing at least 26 people and wounding 69, police and medical officials said.
“Most of the wounded were women and children, and the blast destroyed 15 vehicles and about 20 nearby shops,” said Lieutenant Eid al-Shammari of the local police.

Doctor Mohammed Dhia, head surgeon at the Hilla hospital confirmed the casualties, adding that 25 of those wounded had serious injuries, including severe burns.

Medical officials earlier confirmed that bodies had been evacuated to two hospitals in the area.

The bombing in a mostly Shiite town came hours before the US ambassador to Iraq and his Iranian counterpart met in a second round of face-to-face talks aimed at controlling Iraq’s spiralling violence.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the bombing, but in the past such attacks have been blamed on Sunni insurgent groups such as Al-Qaeda in Iraq, which is trying to overthrow Iraq’s US-backed government and foment unrest.

Muslim in US Navy discussed sniper attacks on military personnel

Why was this man in the Navy in the first place? Did anyone ever think to investigate what kind of views this “Father of Jihad” (that is what his surname means) had about...jihad? Or if he had any connections to jihad groups?

“New Haven: New Claims Against Terror Suspect,” from AP (thanks to Seymour Paine):

A former Navy sailor charged with supporting terrorism by disclosing secret information about the location of Navy ships and the best ways to attack them also discussed attacking military personnel and recruiting stations, federal prosecutors said yesterday. The sailor, Hassan Abujihaad, discussed sniper attacks on military personnel and attacks on recruitment sites, prosecutors said in Federal District Court, although they said it was unclear if he would face additional charges....

Spain Arrests Suspected Russian Double Agent
Reuters ^ | July 24, 2007

Posted on 07/24/2007 4:30:36 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

Spanish intelligence has arrested a suspected double agent who had been sending state secrets to Russia, the head of the National Intelligence Agency (CNI) said on Tuesday, according to local radio.

The double agent had been working for Russia until 2004, CNI head Alberto Saiz said, according to Cadena Ser radio.

The suspected spy, who was arrested in Tenerife, the Canary Islands, on Monday, revealed dozens of identities as well as other information about Spain’s spy service beginning in 2001, Saiz said, according to news agency Europa Press.

But no information about Spain’s counter-terrorism fight was revealed, Saiz was quoted by the Europa Press as saying.

“National security has not been at risk,” he said, adding that European Union and NATO security information had not been revealed either.

Former KGB agent warns he is on Russia’s hit list
scotsman.com ^ | 22 Jul 2007 | BRIAN BRADY

Posted on 07/24/2007 4:38:39 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

A FORMER KGB agent fears he will be the next victim of the escalating diplomatic row between Britain and Russia.

Victor Makarov, who risked his life to pass secrets to Britain before he defected 15 years ago, last night warned he remained on a ‘hit-list’ of fugitives targeted for assassination by President Vladimir Putin.

He claimed the increasingly bitter row over the poisoning of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko increased the danger of an attempt on his life.

“I expect the KGB to try and kill me,” said Makarov, who is demanding greater support and protection from the British authorities. “They will try to shoot me in the back of the head, but they might use poison.

“They never forget. They are already monitoring my calls. When I was at the KGB in the 1970s they were still chasing people who had betrayed them 30 years before.”

Meanwhile, a warm welcome is set to be rolled out for a Russian military delegation due to arrive in Scotland this week to publicise their appearance at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that there would be an official visit.

Deadly boat crash leads to arrest

Police have laid charges in connection with a crash on the St. Lawrence River on Monday night that resulted in the death of a passenger in one of the boats involved.

The Canadian Coast Guard had been helping police look for a crash site in the area of Pilon’s Point and Hamilton’s Island in South Glengarry since residents reported sounds of an accident on the water on Monday night.

Authorities responded to the area, east of Cornwall, after residents heard two boats collide. No evidence of a crash was immediately found, however, and police returned to the area yesterday, when the body of Scott Maynard, 24, of Cornwall was discovered.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, a man was driving a boat west through a channel around 10 p.m. when it collided with an eastbound vessel. The crash caused Maynard, a passenger in the boat, to fall overboard.

The channel where the crash happened is known as a throughway for cigarette smugglers who operate boats at high speeds to bring the illegal, duty-free smokes into Canada.

Last night, police arrested Ryan Lalonde, 23, of South Glengarry and charged him with criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at a scene of a collision. He is expected to appear in a Cornwall court today. More suspects could be identified in the investigation, police said.

Police are trying to identify the occupants of the eastbound vessel. Anyone with information is asked to call

Thank you fanfan.

Updates appreciated.

Maybe the suspect will be able to recall who his fellow smugglers are and what else (if anything and/or anyone) he/they are smuggling.
