Darwin’s House: A Religious Shrine? 06/28/2007
Britain withdrew Darwin’s home, Downe House (outside London), from consideration as a UN World Heritage Site, and Nature seemed downright disappointed.1 An article quoted Darwin scholar James Moore saying, “Muslims go to Mecca, Christians go to Jerusalem, Darwinians go to Downe.” This seems to equate Darwinians with believers in a religion, but Nature quoted this proudly.
What would be the statement of faith of a Darwinian religion? The article quoted Randal Keynes, great-great-grandson of Darwin and the one who originally submitted the nomination of Downe House to UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee for consideration. Keynes felt that the house symbolized the following values: “the understanding of the natural world by observation, hypothesis, experiment, free and wide exchange of information and ideas, theory-building and communication.”
The British government, worried that the UN would reject the nomination on grounds that the site was neither naturally or architecturally unique, decided to withdraw it before the vote. Nature called this a “setback” but said the nomination will be back in two years, in 2009 – the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and 150th anniversary of The Origin of Species...

Methinks the creationists are making way too much of this (of course). Britain celebrates and commemorates the lives of many of their greatest scientists and artists. Does the fact that tens of thousands of people visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace every year, mean that Shakespeare is a deity fit to be worshiped? Sir Isaac Newton’s birthplace is a National Trust property that is open to the public.
The quote from the Nature article is nothing more than a cute turn of phrase (and not a particularly good one at that). Trust Creation Safaris to make a mountain out of a molehill.
He got all but the last part of that right. The darwinists go to hell. At least if they don't, it's despite darwinism and not because of it.

I used to point out Darwinism was faith based on the Crevo threads until the Darwinites got mad and went home to their own site.
If they are true to form, they'll cut and paste from this thread and discuss it among themselves where the logic of their arguments won't be tested.
Id say there’s a big difference between the Darwinist claim that “Muslims go to Mecca, Christians go to Jerusalem, Darwinians go to Downe” and preserving a presidential ranch.

When I start seeing “Darwinists” (whatever they are) on their knees praying to some evolutionary deity then perhaps I will begin to take things seriously. Until then, as I said, it was just a cute turn of phrase—a quotable sound bite, if you will—from a fan of Darwin.
It suits creationists to claim that support for evolution is a religion, even when it is plainly nothing of the sort. If being a supporter or a fan means you belong to a religion, then what does that mean for all those Cubs and Yankees fans out there?
