Perspective on Her Side, Mrs. Edwards Enters Fray (Barf Alert!)
The New York Times ^ | June 30, 2007 | Adam Nagourney and Patrick Healy

Posted on 06/30/2007 8:54:15 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Three months after Elizabeth Edwards said that her cancer had returned in inoperable form, her role and influence in John Edwards’s presidential campaign is undiminished. She has made a flurry of charged public appearances, become a regular presence advising Mr. Edwards on the campaign trail, and wields behind-the-scenes influence in many internal campaign decisions, aides said.

Mrs. Edwards has also become a free operator on behalf of her husband of 29 years, a development that her friends suggest reflects the clarity and perspective that come from her cancer diagnosis, and her increasingly confident political instincts as she advises Mr. Edwards, a North Carolina Democrat, in his second White House bid.

When Mrs. Edwards called in to a television talk show this week to confront the conservative commentator Ann Coulter who had attacked Mr. Edwards this year, it was a decision that Mrs. Edwards said she made impulsively and on her own. The resulting dramatic four minutes of television created a surge of attention that at least momentarily electrified her husband’s campaign, winning applause from the left and apparently spiking contributions in the critical final days of this second-quarter fund-raising period.

It also made Mrs. Edwards the sympathetic face of the Edwards campaign, for a few days overshadowing the candidate himself.

Similarly, Mrs. Edwards told gay leaders at a kick-off event for the San Francisco gay pride parade last week that she supported same-sex marriage, a position at variance with Mr. Edwards’s. He learned of her remarks from reading a newspaper, an aide said. Mrs. Edwards said that she was just offering her opinion, as well as an explanation for her husband’s more conservative views on the issue, in response to a question.

Who wears the pants in that family? I sympathize with the Edwards family; My mother has had breast cancer twice. On the other hand, I don't agree with using her illness to garner votes, and what kind of man campaigns while his wife is dying?

I am sorry that Mrs. Edwards is facing a terminal disease. She and her husband still shouldn’t use their tragedies to garner votes. It’s so tacky.

As someone who is around cancer I feel for Mrs. Edwards.

However, I do believe she is using her sickness to garner votes for her husband.

I don’t think John Edwards has a chance of Flatulence creating much of a stink in an Oklahoma tornado of becoming president.

It made me go check on my Coulter book orders. And I looked for more to prepurchase :)

If she’s such a political genius, why isn’t she the one running for the white house? I hate puff piece journalism (especially from Adam Nagourney).

Their tactic is pretty clear. She’ll be the attack dog (like she did with Ann Coulter), and she’ll be the one to bring in the far left voters (like her support for gay marriage), while Silky Pony will play the centrist.

No other candidate will dare to debate her, because she’s a “victim of cancer”.

Edwards has done more damage to American health care than anybody else in the public view.

Complete scum.

One has to ask

Who is running for president .. Lizzy or John

Because people are reacting to her .. not him

I counted seven times in this article where her cancer or illness was mentioned. I can’t blame this on Edwards, but clearly this is emotional pandering by the newspaper, or as it used to be called , yellow journalism. The New York Times is an empty vessel.

The whole incident may have played well with the left, but there’s always a risk when women do battle on behalf of their husbands. A man can be hurt as well as helped from such a thing.

But whatever you think of Elizabeth Edwards doing battle for her husband, ambushing Ann Coulter like that was definitely a “no class” maneuver.

Sounds like another instance of what Ann Coulter called the liberals' doctrine of infallibility.

On 6/25 or 26th both Edwards were on Jay Leno. The interview went as well as it could. Jay mentioned the large house they live in and John E. shot back that Jay also lived in one. JAy countered he wasn’t hiding the fact. Jay asked him to explain the “2 worlds”. They tried to keep the interview more or less civil and funny but it was lacking. Then at the end Jay stated (paraphrasing) he knew they were busy people and had to leave. They both popped up at the same time and shouted out “Can we stay? We are not busy “ Jay then smiled and said he was sure they had other things to do and got up and escorted then off the show. I have never seen that happed before.

Hi Mo! Liz seems more interested in creating a legacy than Jon at this point. I understand her having to confront mortality, but she is being more phony than her husband as of late.
