Brownback Writes of 'Hatred' of Clintons Jun 29 05:08 PM US/Eastern By SAM HANANEL Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Sam Brownback says he harbored a "hatred" of Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton until he experienced a religious awakening in the mid-1990s.
Brownback, a Republican presidential hopeful, details in a new book how the change in outlook led him to make a stunning apology to Hillary Clinton a few years later during a Senate prayer breakfast.
"I was considering what I should say when I confronted all the anger that I held for the Clintons," the Kansas senator writes in the book, "From Power to Purpose: A Remarkable Journey of Faith and Compassion."
"I thought, I hate them for what they are doing to the country and I feel justified in hating them for it," he writes.
But Brownback says he realized there is never justification for hating someone regardless of what their actions.
He told the prayer breakfast audience that he used to have a "hatred for Bill and Hillary" because of their politics. He spotted Sen. Clinton in the crowd and, speaking directly to her, said he "realized that those thoughts of hatred were wrong. I apologized to her for them. I don't know what she thought, but I believe it made a difference."
Religion permeates nearly every corner of Brownback's book, written with Jim Nelson Black and officially slated for release July 3. His soul searching began in 1995, hastened by two dramatic events in his personal life. His marriage was in real troublehe was "on track" to getting divorcedas he devoted all his energy to the conservative agenda that fueled the Republican takeover of the House in 1994.

Take it up with God, if you like. But, better now, than later.
Actually, I don't hate the Clintons or anyone else. They is what they is. I wish we could find a conservative who exudes the intellectual energy that Bill Clinton does.
he should of stuck with the hatred.
"I couldn't see her in my mirrors!"
You are not alone Sam. It’s okay.
We all hate you!
Although I know it doesn’t apply to the Clintons, I hate rapists. I hate those who are married to a rapist and use their position of power to destroy the victims’ lives behind the scenes. I hate those who allow the sale of technology to an enemy that threatens us all. I hate those who hire thugs to intimidate witnesses. I hate those in the ultimate position of power who use that power to deny a lowly citizen her day in court. I hate those who send a friend to the National Archives to steal original historical documents that are now forever gone.
Given the title of this book it sounds like he’s been worshipping at the altar of Rick Warren. Power to Porpoise indeed.
What the AP writer is hinting at — the 1994 conservative resurgence was based in unrighteous anger at the Clintons.
Notice that Sam Hananel points out he started soul searching in 1995, a year after the Republican takeover of the House.
Any man how has the guts to face his enemy and tell them that he was wrong to feel towards them as he did earns respect from me. Doesn’t mean it’s going to change Hillary Clinton in the slightest. But perhaps in changed Sam Brownback.
I have disagreements with him over the border issue, but I respect the guy more after hearing this particular anecdote.
WTF???
Sucker. Throwing pearls before swine. This is akin to Bush "looking into" V Putin's soul. Wildcat magical spirituality, and it creeps me out.
On the contrary. This is not humility, it is mawkish sentimentality, and Congress is awash in it, when the mic is on.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean getting stupid and forgetting what you’re dealing with.
Brownback... what a schmuck!
That’s the problem with too many in the GOP, no backbone or stupid or RINO shills. There are not enough of the Demints, Sessions, Coburns, etal.
I don’t “hate” the clintons. They should just be put where they belong—JAIL!
I was just kidding Hemo.
