Brownback Writes of 'Hatred' of Clintons Jun 29 05:08 PM US/Eastern By SAM HANANEL Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Sam Brownback says he harbored a "hatred" of Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton until he experienced a religious awakening in the mid-1990s.
Brownback, a Republican presidential hopeful, details in a new book how the change in outlook led him to make a stunning apology to Hillary Clinton a few years later during a Senate prayer breakfast.
"I was considering what I should say when I confronted all the anger that I held for the Clintons," the Kansas senator writes in the book, "From Power to Purpose: A Remarkable Journey of Faith and Compassion."
"I thought, I hate them for what they are doing to the country and I feel justified in hating them for it," he writes.
But Brownback says he realized there is never justification for hating someone regardless of what their actions.
He told the prayer breakfast audience that he used to have a "hatred for Bill and Hillary" because of their politics. He spotted Sen. Clinton in the crowd and, speaking directly to her, said he "realized that those thoughts of hatred were wrong. I apologized to her for them. I don't know what she thought, but I believe it made a difference."
Religion permeates nearly every corner of Brownback's book, written with Jim Nelson Black and officially slated for release July 3. His soul searching began in 1995, hastened by two dramatic events in his personal life. His marriage was in real troublehe was "on track" to getting divorcedas he devoted all his energy to the conservative agenda that fueled the Republican takeover of the House in 1994.

I don’t even know what to type
Pointing out the fact that someone is just plain wrong is not attacking them. You are as misguided and naive as Brownback is. You can happily dance with rattlesnakes all you like but at some point you will get bit. That's the nature of the snake and if you don't understand that you deserve to get bit.
No. It was Brownback harboring hatred for a person.
Have you ever accomplished something positive for yourself or others because you hated?
Hatred is not required to be on the right side of any issue, and it is not required to achieve any goal. It only obstructs, usually yourself more so than the target of your hate.
I’m willing to be you know this.
Brownback is a ne’er do well hack. He has about as much credibility as the Breck Girl.
But I do think there is no more hated couple in this country than the Klintoons.
“self righteous prig” “fool” etc.
Is that attacking or pointing out the fact that someone is wrong?
And are you saying that it is right to hate? Or that it is wrong to apologize for hating?
Think carefully now, you could paint yourself into a corner real fast.
You’re right—only them. The only possible explanation is politics as usual for liberal dems. If they were Republicans or anyting else, neither could be elected president of any very small high school band boosters.
Brownback also boasts a higher ACU lifetime rating than Fred Thompson. Quite a bit higher.
Huh. Go figure.
Wrong. YOU think it was 'positive' for Hillary to steal FBI files.
YOU think it was 'positive' for Brownback to sell out America,
even though the loser changed his vote after he lost.
Hatred is an emotion. Who cares in the light of such evil?
Oh, pleeeeezzzzzzzzz.....
I hate spinach. Am I going to Hell?
I’m sorry you misunderstood me. I’ll try to post with greater clarity.
The stealing of the files was wrong. The immigration bill was wrong.
Hating someone is wrong. Apologizing for hating someone is right...and very hard to do (I speak from experience).
Can you give me equal clarity?
Do you think it is right and positive to hate?
Do you think it is wrong and negative to apologize for hating?
She'll have a reflection?
Solid comparison.
Really. You just compared hating a human to hating a vegetable.
Do you think it is right and good to hate other people?
What would be your role in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising?
I'm saying that there is absolute evil in the world and if you don't have the ability to recognize that evil and have some healthy hatred for it you are in for a rude awakening.
I don’t see why he felt he had to apologize to them...it’s one thing to realize that hating someone destroys that hater....but the hateee doesn’t care.
I imagine Billary had a good laugh over this. Remember that when Chelsea was little they screamed at her at the dinner table to teach her how to withstand people who hated her and her parents? They wanted her to be able to ignore other people’s opinions just the way they do. So sick.
Christianity is not a faith to be taken in moderation - you either believe it, or you don’t. Forgiveness is as difficult as any doctrine in Christianity ... that it is difficult to enact does not mean that it has “gotten out of hand”.
Hatred seems to me a very intense emotion to feel for a political rival. Social conservatism is as much about returning decorum to both society at large and politics generally as it is about any other issue particularly.
I would hesitate to vote for ANYONE who lacked the emotional stability to separate political disagreement from personal hatred.
