BORDER BILL THE LAST BLOW
June 29, 2007 -- PRESIDENT Bush's disastrous second term has not been without its moments. Unfortunately for him, these moments have come primarily when members of his own party have risen up against him to defy his wishes. That's what happened yesterday. For the second time in four weeks, Republicans in the Senate put a stake through the heart of Bush's beloved but politically catastrophic immigration bill.
It's also what happened in the early months of the second term, when Bush chose to nominate his unqualified aide, Harriet Miers, to the Supreme Court - and finally backed down and had her withdraw her name after three weeks of lobbying and complaining.

He would not and could not back down on immigration reform, an issue far too close to his heart. But after the Senate first rejected the bill at the end of May, Bush could have left it alone and accepted defeat. He could have seen reason, as he did in January 2004 when he first proposed a piece of legislation and was met with an uprising from his conservative base - whereupon he prudently dropped the subject because he was running for re-election and needed a united and enthusiastic Republican electorate behind him.

And perhaps most interesting, Bush chose to believe it was more important to court potential future Republican voters - those illegals who would have gained a "path to citizenship" under the terms of the bill in 13 years' time - rather than listen to the concerns of present-day Republican voters.

Funny, if you start arresting those you know about, the others will quit hiring illegals. And the illegals that are here will self-deport. These are not difficult concepts. This logic is used to crack down lawbreaking, from drug dealiong to speeding. All it takes is will, which Bush is lacking.
You lost the debate. The American people have spoken out overwhelmingly against this. And they are just getting started.
Bush only got serious about workplace enforcement when he wanted this bill. Since he can't get a bill any longer, he will go back to his old ways.
This is a defining moment for his Presidency. The question is...how intelligent is he?
This was never about intelligence. This was about the corporatist/globalist wing of the GOP thinking they could run counter to 80 percent of the party with their president who no longer had to worry about re-election.
But they got greedy. And now they will pay a price for years to come. The sleeping giant has been re-awakened. The grassroots can no longer be vetoed with campaign cash and slick TV ads. And this issue resonates across party lines. No additional H1-B visas. No guest worker program. The laws of supply and demand will no longer work only in one direction. And if the feds don't want to deal with the problem, state and local governments will. In fact, that is one reason Bush and his backers wanted this legislation - the corporatists live in fear of the people now, working through federalist principles to deal with the issue in their own neighborhoods.

Oh, the feds will quit prosecuting. But local governments will act. And the local people OVERWHELMINGLY support such actions.
That is why Bush and the corporatists wanted this bill so badly. We the People are doing what our president and representatives will not.
I disagree. I see nothing in the Constitution that limits pardons to American citizens. The president can pardon any federal offense. There is debate whether Marc Rich had renounced his US citizenship but he was pardoned anyway.
My wife is Latina. She wants illegals deported. Wanna call her a bigot? It is about illegal immigration. I personally want the front door of legal immigration expanded and streamlined. However, that is not a viable step until we can secure the back door. That is common sense. Which is why you don't get it.

I don’t think that Bush will build the wall either, looking back, I think that was just a ruse to get people to back him on the immigration bill, now that the bill has gone down in flames, don’t expect to see any wall being built, how da ya like that one? Gives a real cozy feeling, don’t it?

I totally agree. TALK RADIO was instrumental in defeating this bill. The Capital Hill phones were ringing off the hook. I could NOT get through to NH Senator DUDD GREGG’S office for two days. I thought I heard Harry Reid may even had the phones shut down.
TALK RADIO helped motivate the common man (like me) and that is why the govt. wants to control Talk Radio.
