Car Bomb Scare In London

An explosive device found in a car in central London has been defused.

Police were called to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in The Haymarket area shortly before 02:00 this morning.

The area was cordoned off by police who examined the car.

They discovered what appeared to be a potentially explosive device, which was then made safe.

An investigation has been launched by the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command.

I just heard a report on the radio that this was the same type of bomb used by insurgents in Iraq. Then they said something about the gas cans and nails in another car.

Are there TWO separate devices and cars? I am getting confused.

So far there have been 3 cars mentioned. However only one has been announced to have explosives in it. That one by the bar. It had propane, nails and gas in it.

One care nearby they think may have been a get away vehicle (I don’t know how they know this)

So we have the car bomb and the “escape vehicle”

The device, which contained 60 litres of petrol, a large amount of nails and several gas canisters, was found in the Mercedes early this morning.

Park Lane has also been closed to traffic due to a suspect vehicle in an underground car park that police believe is connected to the attempted bombing in Haymarket.

Sky News crime correspondent said: “It might be the escape vehicle of the Mercedes driver, or it might be the vehicle of an accomplice, but it is turning into something very significant.”

As a city that has twice been attacked by Islamic extremists — a truck bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 and the attacks of September 11, 2001, — New York has police representatives in hot spots around the world, including London.

Bloomberg said the city was awaiting a report from its London-based officer.

British police said the bomb in London’s busy theater district could have caused huge loss of life. The bomb was found in a green Mercedes car parked outside a night club shortly after 1 a.m. (midnight GMT) when several hundred people were still in the area, about half-a-mile from the prime minister’s Downing Street residence.

As I jusr said in another thread - the correspondent on the ITV evening news just minutes ago reported that he believed an explosive device has been made safe in the second car.

It is believed that the quick-thinking cop recognised that the car was wired to blow up, jumped in and disconnected the trigger device, thought to be a mobile phone.
