WASHINGTON – Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, misunderstood the results of a vote on an amendment to the "comprehensive immigration reform" bill being debated in the upper house today.
He also is apparently unfamiliar with efforts to re-impose the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters operating on the public airwaves.
But it was nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Sean Hannity's persistent grilling about the senator's intentions on key cloture votes leading to a showdown on what is characterized as an "amnesty" bill that caused Voinovich to melt down before millions of listeners today.
The normally low-profile Republican hung up on the No. 2 talk host in the country.
The key sticking point in the conversation was Hannity's question as to whether the senator had done a cost analysis on the bill. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, estimates the bill would cost the American taxpayers $2.5 trillion.
Voinovich said he didn't believe the cost would be that high because a third of those eligible for a path to citizenship would never take it.
"How do you know that?" Hannity asked. "Where does that figure come from?"
Voinovich did not provide any supporting evidence for his contention and admitted he had read neither the bill itself or the Heritage Foundation analysis.
The senator complained that some of his constituents have attempted to "intimidate" him by saying they would oppose his re-election if he voted for the bill.
"You do not intimidate George Voinovich," he said. "During my 40 years in this business, I have always looked at the pros and cons of each piece of legislation and made a determination. If people don't like my decision, they can express their will during the next election."

Thank you. I just looked it up and he isn’t from one of the 18 states where you can recall a senator. Damn. I saw a Freeper get his post pulled this morning because he asked about recalling the senator from Nevada, it was interesting.
No. United States Senator is a Federal office and is not subject to recall. Senator McCain and, I believe, Kyl have signed a pledge that, should a recall initiative be successful, they would voluntarily step down or submit to a special election.
I’m no Constitutional scholar but I don’t think Federal constitutional office holders like Senators and Congressmen can be recalled by their states. I think a US Senator would have to be expelled by the US Senate and likewise a Congressman by the US House of Representatives. Now, don’t quote me on that.
He was like the office party drunk at the beginning when he seemingly didn't know what the FD was and was just talking and laughing at his own lame attempt at a joke. He couldn't give any substantial numbers for the cost of this bill, he stumbled over so many easy questions, and he almost choked when he had to admit he only read summaries of the bill.
The best part was when he accused Sean of stifling the conversation, which completely didn't happen. He ranted like a lunatic supposedly telling Sean off. He's toast.
I virtually never listen to Hannity. I’m usually listening to Savage at that time. But Savage’s screaming unnerved me, so I switched. I happened to hear quite a bit of the Hannity/Voinovich conversation. I was impressed with Hannity’s questioning. He was asking pertinent questions. Voinovich just couldn’t handle it.
Damnbetcha.
The creepy thing about this is how they keep sidestepping what the majority of their constituents really want. They arrogantly say they’re gonna fix talk radio, (because it effectively did the Paul Revere on this amnesty bill and rallied the base against it) - I can smell the sulfur coming from each office of those Senators who vote in favor of this bill. The real agenda is a North American union and the dissolving of our sovereignty, and the softening of the borders is a absolute step towards this end. Those Republicans, like Lott, Voinivich, etc. perhaps have a more powerful agent pulling their strings. Sulfur, indeed!
Hannity replayed it at the end of his show. Voiny was horrendous. Complete and utter incompetence with a tinge of governmental do-you-know-who-I-am hubris.
Its hard to believe. but there is a Senator dumber than Barbara box of rocks Boxer!
DeWine was just as big a weenie. We term-limited him in Ohio and replaced him with a member of the DSA (Communists), Brown. Voinivich is also toast. Unfortunately the way that works is the same way; he'll be replaced with a 'Rat.
We're paying this guy to be a puffed-up ego maniac? If Voinovich doesn't have the time to read the bill, he needs a less stressful job... and one that's not on our dime.
It might be time for everyday citizens to run for office. Maybe even past time. Think about it.

Well, I agree with you there but I’m sure the rest aren’t going to follow his lead so his replacement will probably be a bad one.

Senator you will not live long enough to see the destructive results of this shamnasty bill.
However, my children and grandchildren will have to live with your foolishness.
My respect for Sean grew significantly. I was listening live and he asked the questions that needed to be asked, had facts to back up his assertions, and stuck to his guns when Voinovich tried to intimidate Sean.
The Senator showed up expecting a 'mutual back slapping' session,and got nothing of the kind. Sean was effective, I wish other interviewers on both sides could be that good and objective.
