(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.
Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyones faiththose comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling, Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.
Romneys remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCains campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.
Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign workers e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romneys religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: Thought youd find this interesting.
Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.
In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I dont have any issue with that at all, Romney said.
He said McCain can do whatever he feels is the right thing. Theres no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.
Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.
Its a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign, he said.
Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.
Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.
The bill ought to be repealed, he said. Its been the wrong course for American campaigns.
Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.
Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.
Yeah, the Joseph Smith death wasn’t as clear cut as it seems. There certainly was a mob, but that mob was preceded by the Mormon mob that destroyed the Nauvoo Expositor press. And it was Joseph Smith who was called General, because he commanded a Mormon militia (which he expected shortly to break him from jail).
So, I’d be inclined to say rough justice was a part of the times.
“Ampu, I must say I am shocked by your support of cold blooded murder.
A cheap pistol that was smuggled into prison to try to make the mob think twice about cold blooded murder does not in any way mitigate the circumstances in which Joseph Smith was indeed murdered.”
Actually, it was a 6 barrel revolver smuggled to him, no doubt in hope that the Mormon militia General Joseph Smith commanded would come to his rescue. So, it is quite possible the gentile mob merely short circuited the Mormon militia mob from killing the jailers and setting off a seccessionary mini-war.
FC,
I missed the part in the account of the stoning
of Stephen where he was armed with a Saturday
Night Special and managed to get off a couple
shots at the Saul before succumbing to the
stoning...

AM, take a lesson from the RM. He/She has much more class.
Yeah, really devastating. Like any good comic book.
“Endless Celestial Sex???” What an intriguing concept for a single guy in his 20’s... I can’t wait!
I love how the demons suddenly get their hair mussed up. How creative!
LOL! So THAT’s how we got “the negro race!” I must have missed that seminar in the temple...
“The Starbase Kolob!!!” Oh, stop! I can’t take it! You’ve really got us pegged, kids!
...
No, really, I can’t stop laughing, gimme a minute...
...
Oh! And he came all this way to have sex with the virgin Mary!!! ROTFLOL! I hope it was worth the gasoline...
Oooh, great action scenes! I really like the wooden-spoon-on-brass-pot sound effects...
About 50% of the statements in this cartoon are based on the truth; the other half are twisted or outright lies. I hear even Satan uses 90% truth.
“Banned by the Mormon Church?” Who thought that up? Can someone here explain to me exactly -how- the Mormons are gonna -ban- anything? “You can’t watch that cartoon, mister evangelist! Our prophet banned it!” Good grief!
The fact that you ladies and gents lap this sort of stuff up speaks tremendous volumes about your state of mind regarding the LDS Church. In fact, I think I’m going to take a short sabbatical from engaging with any of you. You sit there and solemnly nod at this sort of tripe. I just can’t take you seriously right now.
Best regards.
And we’re in our fund drive! That thread lasted too long ...
All you did was giggle. Care to refute anything in the cartoon?
Come on, it was a cartoon! We’ve covered all the stuff and more. Given him a rest.
And I got a momentary Zot!
Still not one fish though, dangit...
Nope. It’s all been refuted time and time again by me and many others. Go to LDS.org if you want a review.
But I do kind of wish we’d actually adopt the doctrine of “Endless Celestial Sex.”
Maybe I’ll change my mind when I’m married?
Now, as to Joseph firing his weapon during his murder at Carthage...
Do you equally condemn Peter, the one whom the Savior made his “rock” and built His church upon. He nearly split the head of a Roman in twain with his sword while defending Jesus, but only took off an ear instead. Remember that Joseph had 3 others in the Jail with him. Is he not allowed the same human compassion and love toward his brethren in defending them?
After Hyrum was hit in the head and fell to the floor, crying "I am a dead man", and seeing the immediate demise of the others as well, Joseph then tried to jump into the crowded mob below so that the others would be left alone upstairs. It worked. Joseph was dead from fire below and from the door behind, before he hit the stones below the jail. The others were left behind.
The mob had achieved their aim, or at least thought so. The Church did not disintegrate as hoped, but strengthened in their resolve and efforts. Similarly, the same thing seems to happen on this list day in and day out. You cannot shake the faith when it is given by the Holy Ghost and not Man. All you tend to accomplish is a greater determination to defend and bear testimony of the Truth of Jesus Christ and His restored Gospel.... Something which I guess feeds the FR beast... for lack of a better term.
It would seem the Illinois mob should have hearkened to the words of Gamaliel in Acts 5: Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
My FRiend, you’ve addressed it all, but I wouldn’t go so far as to agree you’ve refuted it all. But expecting you to refute a cartoon is beyond the scope.
I just saw it that was made by someone who is fast and loose!
Gosh many of you know how to tie your own shoe lace, but can not discern that was not close to the Doctrine of Jesus Christ!
Read the standard works and let the spirit of Jesus Christ witness to you, and not some workings of a warp mind!
I'm sorry to say that it is probable your lust will decrease thereafter, yes.
This will piss your wife off to no end for a while, and then she won't care.
Have a cookie.
Remember back about the time Howard W. Hunter was the President of the Church? About that time, we lost several of the Twelve. There’s was a pretty high turnover rate for a couple of years.
I remember that there was an editorial in the local paper that essentially said that the LDS Church would collapse from all this; it could never survive the loss of so many of its leaders in such a short time.
Such people as the author of that article, and the members of the mob, just do not understand the fundamental nature of the LDS Church. It is Christ’s -own- Church, -the- organization that He has set up to accomplish His will in preparation for His Second Coming. It will not fall. And a lot of people continue to be disappointed at this fact.
Someone did not give you the updated memo brilliant man
Gal. is about current events in 33-34 AD not the 1800’s
If you continue spreading this manure than you knowingly lie!
Your prophet will never measure up to The Lord, too much is known about him and his tricks, his long list of wives, many of whom were already married to other men. And we need not go again into Smith's bold and demonically inspired effort to rewrite the Bible inorder to include false prophecies of his advent 'in these latter days'.
Thanks!
Have some green jello, with shredded carrots!
(Mormons tend to have big families, maybe it’ll help?)
Does anyone know where of when this saying comes from?
“meeting St. Peter at the Pearly Gates”?
It has to have it’s origin based in some kind of truth or tradition, most things do. I hear it all the time anyway.
Why is Peter guarding the gates of heaven if he is not a gatekeeper of some kind? Is that not a Judge?
The 12 apostles will Judge with Christ, that’s straight out of the NT:
Matthew 19:28
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Luke 22:30
That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Similarly, the 12 disciples that Christ chose when he ministered to the ancient inhabitants of the Americas were given a similar promise, but a little different:
1 Nephi 12:
6 And I saw the heavens open, and the Lamb of God descending out of heaven; and he came down and showed himself unto them.
7 And I also saw and bear record that the Holy Ghost fell upon twelve others; and they were ordained of God, and chosen.
8 And the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold the Twelve Disciples of the Lamb, who are chosen to minister unto thy seed.
9 And he said unto me: Thou rememberest the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb? Behold they are they who shall judge the twelve tribes of Israel; wherefore, the twelve ministers of thy seed shall be judged of them; for ye are of the house of Israel.
10 And these twelve ministers whom thou beholdest shall judge thy seed. And, behold, they are righteous forever; for because of their faith in the Lamb of God their garments are made white in his blood.
Cheers, I hope I’m not being redundant if this has already been addressed.
