WASHINGTON, DC, June 15, 2007 Imitation, they say, is the sincerest form of flattery. In the two and a half years that the DC Chapter of Free Republic has been FReeping (counterprotesting) a group of CodePink-sponsored anti-war protesters at Walter Reed, their "vigil" has gradually sought to look more and more like our FReep. First, after pressure from us and exposure in the conservative media, they relinquished their bloody protest signs for patently insincere "Support the Troops" signs. Next, when most of the passersby beeped for us, they ditched their desecrated U.S. flags for the genuine Stars'n'Stripes. This week, they even copied the style of the signs we designed to make fun of them. Can it get much better than this?

Regular Passersby Know the Difference

Of the many passing cars that beep and wave, some are "regulars" whose schedules take them by every Friday. This week, a cabdriver came prepared with his own flag. He pumped his brakes and leaned on his horn, waving the flag out the window and grinning from ear to ear as we woo-hooed at the top of our lungs in response. His slender, angular appearance, dark skin and North African features gave us the impression that he may be an immigrant, enthusiastically grateful for being in America, or for America's role in the War on Terror.

DC media students interview FReepers

Two American University students, a videographer and a reporter, found out about our rally on Google while searching for the attitudes of everyday Americans about the war in Iraq. "We're working on a documentary," said the reporter, who asked to remain anonymous due to the uncertain response of her possibly left-leaning professors. "We want to get a different perspective on the war. It's so easy to hear the 'more reported' side," she noted. "We want the contrast from what you typically see on TV."
I caught the tail end of her interview with Kristinn Taylor, who, in addition to co-leading the DC Chapter, is Free Republic national spokesman, appearing frequently on television and radio about Free Republic issues and Gathering of Eagles events. "This is one place we really didn't want to come out to do any type of demonstration," Kristinn told her, casting a glance at the Walter Reed campus. "It's a place for soldiers to heal. But some anti-war people came out here [in 2005]. We resolved after 9/11 not to let the anti-war people do what they did to the troops in Vietnam. So, we are there to counter them wherever they turn up in DC.
"This [Walter Reed FReep] has become very special to us," he continued. "Now the families see a positive message -- we support the troops; we want them to win. That shouldn't be a political message, but sometimes it is."
Who was there:
This week's Honor Roll included FReepers BillF, BufordP, DaughterofTGSL, GunsAreOK, Kristinn, PrezUSA222, R. T. Delta from WR, Sensei Ern, TennesseeNana, tgslTakoma, Tolerance Sucks Rocks, Tom the Redhunter,Trooprally [Mr & Mrs] , VAFlagWaver, VictoryNY and yours truly, Albion Wilde; and lurkers Bill from MD, Bruce & Chris and George & Ethel.
Also stopping by were two young Air Force corpsmen who work at Walter Reed's Forest Glen research facility Christian from Pennsylvania and James from Korea both Air Force brats. Christian's father was shot last year while serving in Iraq and is now staying in Walter Reed's third-floor MedHold, while Christian lives on the second floor, just below his recovering Dad. "I joined the Air Force right when he was still in the hospital after he got shot," said Christian. "He was, like, 'What?' "
"His dad's a hero," added James. Although James and Christian are performing medical tech work now, there is the possibility that they may also deploy to Iraq. "We're here to fight for freedom and everyone else's freedom," James said, "and not let anyone try to take it away."
R. T. Delta, an Army troop from Walter Reed who was standing with us in civvies would agree. He was shooting both pinkos and FReepers all evening -- with an impressive camera and long lens. "This is my shoulder-fired propaganda rocket," he smirked.

BTTT
I’m going straight to tiggles house tonight. See you at WR.
The Friday Freeps are the highlight of my week.

LOL! That is one thing the pinkos will not copy. They would have to be inclusive.
I can imagine their sign now:
"May the diety of your choice, or non-choice, bless you if you believe he or she does or doesn't do that sort of thing."
Great FReep, way to go. Someone might know this — last night on John Ziegler (I think it was) someone called in and said that the guys in Iraq are asking for Beanie Babies. They give them to the kids and often get information re local bad guys. Does anyone know about this? Any idea of an address to send them to? Longshot question I know but you never know who might know .... Thx.
Thanks-to-the-good-guys bumpity.
FR’s finest support America’s finest! Great report! Thank y’all.
CODE PINKOS: I know you read this page. You say you “support the troops”, then “bring them home”. The troops want to stay in Iraq and in Afghanistan AND WIN. Then they want to come home. Why do you think the troops at Walter Reed don’t agree with you? Why do they reject your idea of “supporting” them? Or are they just ignorant, low class dupes of the evil Chimpy BushMcHitlerBurton?
Hey Buford, don’t forget to watch your 6 tonight! LOL
