WASHINGTON - The Senate passed an energy bill late Thursday that includes an increase in automobile fuel economy, new laws against energy price-gouging and a requirement for huge increases in the production of ethanol.

...

The White House said the president would be urged to veto an energy bill that includes the price-gouging measure, arguing it amounts of price controls. The president also repeatedly has said he opposes Congress mandating a specific mileage number for auto fuel economy. Bush believes the Transportation Department should be given increased flexibility to set a standard.

...

Republicans blocked a $32 billion tax package to boost energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, refusing to go along with $29 billion in taxes on the oil industry to pay for it. Republicans also refused to allow a vote on a measure that would have required electric utilities to produce at least 15 percent of their power from wind, biomass or other renewable energy sources.

This bill mandates SUVs and trucks to get better mileage than the smallest cars on the road today. 2400lb, 100hp clown cars will barely crack 30mpg on the EPA test and they want trucks to get 35?

What this is really saying is that the only car you will be able to buy is a compact hybrid. If you want a truck, you can have a compact hybrid with a 3 foot bed on the back. If you want to actually carry bulky items, or go offroad, or carry children, or more than 2 adults, or survive a crash, buy used.

The only salvation is the teeth in this bill take effect far enough in the future that there will be time for future congresses to push it back before it bites. Kind of like Bush’s imaginary balanced budget that counts on no new spending for the next administration.

According to the Mark Levin show every 1 mile per gallon increase in the CAFE standards = 7700 new highway deaths because of the need to lighten vehicle weight.

And they are talking way more than 1 mile per gallon.

It is going to be a bloodbath.

Hey, you're welcome! BTW, I still went out and held my nose for the Republican candidate even though Christ himself would have lost to Herb Kohl here in WI. I'm pretty sure other conseratives still went out and voted. But I guess it's better to just continue crying in your beer and repeating this canard ad nauseum.

I heard Dennis Miller say today that a recent poll has the president's approval rating at 29%, but the Congress rating is much lower, at 14%.

Bunch of morons over there, and sadly, many of them are Republicans. Trent Lott, McCain, and assorted others come to mind.

I was listening for a few minutes this week to the guy sitting in for Rush who was spelling out what it would mean to milk, meat, etc. prices due to the diversion of resources to produce ethanol. That includes water, by the way, in addition to corn. The amount of water it takes sounded like an awful lot for an awful little.

Face it, the guys in Washington are brain dead.

A Presidential veto will probably be coming on this legislation. I don’t see the House side getting enough votes to override a probable Presidential veto on this.

"That includes water, by the way, in addition to corn."

Can anyone find "yellow" corn in the produce section anymore?

It's all high fructose "white" corn" used for corn syrup (sugar substitute) and ethanol.

Its even hard to find "yellow" corn tortillas.

And there goes the price of eggs.

Not many of them are Republicans. 20% of Republicans are liberal RINOS the rest vote for less government ,against Amnesty , against CFR, for medicaid cuts, against tax increases as THIS article shows.

GOP blocked theses huge tax increases. Democrats who actually control Congress wanted many more insane socialist, big government controls in just this bill and Republicans stopped most of them.

Look at the votes on these bills. don’t blame all of the GOP

If you want a truck, you can have a compact hybrid with a 3 foot bed on the back.

That's why I'm taking real good care of my baby...our '98 Dodge Durango that we nicknamed "Canyonero" after the SUV Marge had on "The Simpsons."

It may not have a bed but we can always hook up a trailer, plus we love the room, the 4x4 and the V8 power that can light up the tires.

We'll put as much money into Canyonero as needed to keep it in like new condition.

Here's a pic from back around St Patrick's Day when my youngest son and I were out playing in the snow...

Don;t forget the 15% penalty for EtOH. 30 MPG gasoline is 25.5
ETOH.This will make the cars even smaller. Look on the bright side, after we outlaw SUV’s and take them off the road the drunk Illegals wont be as dangerous.
