GOP comeback in Congress?
The Washington Times ^ | Jun 21, 2007 | Donald Lambro

It may be too early to make any predictions about the 2008 elections, but it's likely Republicans will win back some House seats they lost last year.

Indeed, as I noted in an earlier column, at least eight of the nine "most vulnerable" House seats are held by Democrats, according to veteran congressional elections analyst Stuart Rothenberg.

In Florida's 16th District, for example, Republicans are heavily favored to recapture the seat that Democrat Tim Mahoney narrowly won after Mark Foley resigned in disgrace in the House page scandal.

In Georgia's heavily Republican 8th District, Democrat Jim Marshall squeaked through with less than 1,800 votes. But the betting in political circles is that his seat, too, will end up in the GOP's column next year. The Republican Party is rallying behind Rick Goddard, the former commanding general at the Warner Robins Air Logistics base, who would give Mr. Marshall a very tough race.

In Texas' Republican-drawn 22nd District (formerly held by Tom DeLay), which gave President Bush 64 percent of its vote in 2004, Democrat Nick Lampson won by a thin margin, though his opponent was not on the ballot and had to run a write-in campaign. "This is probably the GOP's best opportunity to take back a district they lost last year," Mr. Rothenberg said in his latest analysis of the 2008 congressional elections.

In a volatile election cycle when Republican prospects are weakened by the unending war in Iraq and polls show a large majority of Americans believe the country is "on the wrong track," one would think the Democrats would be favored to strengthen their hold on the House.

But Republican campaign strategists now believe last year's wave that swept Democrats to power will not be replicated next year and that many seats they lost will be back...

If Bush and his RINO’s pass the Amenesty bill, Real republicans will not show up at the polls or donate time and money.

So they will not win anything.

if they can win back the party’s base

hahahahaha good luck with that! Seems to me they are working on abolishing the base with their dumba$$ comments and Bush pushing the amnesty bill.

That's a HUGE "if". If amnesty gets rammed through, game over.

As far as the how this former Republican party base voter is concerned, if I had a car that let me down as much as the GOP, I'd shoot it full of holes, set fire to it, and push it off a cliff.

Very well said! I wish it was short enough to use as a tagline.

Nobodys likes amnesty, . . .

Not true. A bunch of Senators like it. 100% of current American presidents like it a lot. A lot of businesses who have become addicted to cheap labor think it's a great idea. The head of DHS likes it. Bureaucrats longing for a new underclass to exploit ala War on Poverty think it's the best thing since sliced bread.

“Alternative Energy King” Jerry McNierny won against incumbent Richard Pombo here in our district using a LOT of outside money. A former Assemblyman and State Board of Equalization member Dean Andal has thrown his hat into the ring to take back the seat lost by Pombo. He is a conservative and said he will only stay in Congress for a set time (self-imposed term limits). There is hope, after all.

The problem is you need something to vote for...the Republicans think they will get the I hate the Democrat congress vote. I have no enthusiam for Republicans; I don’t know if I ever will again. I don’t think the Repubs will take back congress if this immigration bill goes through.

I agree. We need a solid conservative. I have to say I would rather vote third party than vote for a Rino who will govern like a Dem and then the Repubs get the blame. The Democrats get their way and the Repubs get the shaft.

A strong candidate on top of the GOP presidential ticket will help, but I still think net losses in the House & Senate are still more likely.

No sir. This is the House, not the Senate. The House is where the power is at. I think they will learn their spending lesson and be a powerful force for good.

I think it will be a stalemate for the next 5+ years regardless who wins the White House. Congress will not move either direction and no side will have 60-67 to prevent a filibuster or override a veto.

If the party doesn’t repect the wishes of the party base then it is not our party.

The leadership thinks the same way you do, who else will they vote for if not us, so we can screw them and there is nothing they can or will do.

Well guess what, they must not have learned from the last election results.
