Fred Thompson called out on his profession of faith Evangelical prof: not active in church

Doubts continue to swirl over Fred Thompson's faith ... Thompson shot back that he's not only a Christian, but a member of the fundamentalist Churches of Christ.

...Professor Mark Elrod of Harding University said he doubts Thompson is "filling out an attendance card at a Church of Christ on Sundays." ...he hasn't been able to find any information regarding the former senator's actual membership... "In our tradition," Elrod said, "that's called 'being out of fellowship' or a 'lapsed member.'"

... WND has learned Thompson was baptized into Christ in the early 1950s at the First Street Church of Christ in Lawrenceburg, Tenn.

His mother, Ruth Thompson, regularly attends the Brentwood Church of Christ near Nashville... Fred Thompson is known to worship there when he visits his mother.

In 1997, Thompson spoke at a fund-raising event at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn. – another college affiliated with the Churches of Christ – where he was presented with a Bible. He and his parents have set up academic scholarships in their names there.

...

According to a spokesman for Focus on the Family, Dobson had not not meant to disparage Thompson and was simply "attempting to highlight that to the best of his knowledge, Sen. Thompson hadn't clearly communicated his religious faith, and many evangelical Christians might find this a barrier to supporting him."

Dobson told reporter Dan Gilgoff he had never met Thompson ...

Thompson and his first wife, Sara Lindsey, divorced in 1985. The Church of Christ frowns on divorce, and believes only "fornication," or sexual infidelity, can be grounds for divorce and remarriage.

In 2002, Thompson and second wife, Jeri Kehn, were married in the liberal United Church of Christ, not the ultra-conservative Churches of Christ to which Thompson claims to belong.

Just to be clear, I would never, in a million years, consider Hillary a godly person, not matter what religion she professes! I was not alluding to Hillary in my post, just that I am willing to consider people of any religion or gender who are devoted to truth, justice and the values of the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Holy mackeral. Perhaps Fred should consider the Catholic Church. Perfection is not required. Thank God.

Never heard of that one.

This is nothing more than the Left trying to say to Evangelicals, "See, Fred isn't a bible-thumper like you!"

No it is not. Read the article. It is a faculty member of Harding College, and World Net Daily (predictably) has pounced on it. Sometimes WND just embarrasses the crap out of me.

Yeah, really. Attendance cards? Am I in homeroom again?

I never even fill out those Visitor cards in the hymnals. And I’ve been visiting a lot.

Your point? Will they fulfill A & B? Because at this point a wart on a frog’s ass looks better than the ‘popular’ candidates (which includes Thompson) when it comes to limited government

I never even fill out those Visitor cards in the hymnals. And I’ve been visiting a lot.

I once visited a church in my non-churched days and smiled and passed the visitor's logbook, without signing it. I did not want a visit or call, or anything. Just to check out what was being said. A deacon tapped me on the shoulder and handed me the register with a pen! God love these people! I grinned and signed some bogus name and telephone number. I think they had a real active visitation program and wanted to be sure they could get in contact with me. I know now that they wanted to be sure I had a clear understanding of who Christ is and how to know him, and I love them for that.

It was sure strange to me at the time, though.

From the days of the first frontiers onward, a significant percentage of American Protestants have not been formally affiliated with any particular denomination. Some of these non-affiliated have been very clearly committed men and women of strong Faith. I really doubt that this is going to be a problem for Thompson with any voters, who would otherwise embrace him.

Personally, I am in favor of Ron Paul, and failing Paul, Tom Tancredo. But I do not like to see anyone putting down other legitimate candidates, and Thompson--assuming he declares--would be a legitimate candidate.

Right now, I believe that all Conservative Republicans need to concentrate on waking up every intelligent American they can reach; helping them to see that we have been headed in the wrong direction. The immigration debate, only really just getting started in America, is the best opportunity in years, to accomplish this. We can then fight over whom the candidate should be. But right now, let's wake up our neighbors as to the threat that the Teddy Kennedy policy, of trying to change America via incongruous immigration, poses for our future. The fat is in the fire, as the saying goes, and we cannot afford to be fighting among ourselves, unnecessarily. (Of course, Giuliani and McCain are fair game, as they carry water for Teddy.)

Thousands of varieties with their own rules -- or without rules -- all (well, most) claiming to be Scripturally sound. That's how they read it, who's to say differently?

There are differences between major doctrines, minor doctrines and preference.

The Church of Christ requires you to fill out an attendance card every Sunday? Weird.

No. Most of Elrod's comments were tongue-in-cheek.

"Your point?"

The point is that people who worship trees or rocks really exist or have existed.

Good point. I am an evangelical and I believe Fred will make a great president. I believe it was Providence that lead to establishing of this nation and I believe that Providence is still at work. I am certain that some of our Founding Fathers would not have met the standards of “Evangelicals.” However, they understood Providence. Maybe Fred was “called for such a time as this”. Aren’t we all? Don’t we all have a responsibility to serve our country in the capacity we can. I believe that Fred is sincere when he says he doesn’t crave the White House. I believe he will serve this country with his entire being if asked to do so, even as President of the United States. Go Fred!
