From New Hampshire to California, American Indian leaders are speaking out more forcefully about the danger of climate change.

Members of six tribes recently gathered near the Baker River in the White Mountains for a sacred ceremony honoring "Earth Mother." Talking Hawk, a Mohawk Indian who asked to be identified by his Indian name, pointed to the river's tea-colored water as proof that the overwhelming amount of pollution humans have produced has caused changes around the globe.

We took the back road (on the reservation) between Devil’s Tower and Custer’s Battle field. After passing homestead upon homestead of trashed out trailers, junk cars, and other assorted junk all over most of their lots I mentioned to my young kids to remember this when they hear in school how noble the Native Americans are and that the White Man is ruining nature.

I also told them that it probably has more to do with Liberalism / communism than them being Indians. When you don’t have to work hard to own your own land you’re apt not to take care of it, etc.

You are spot on. All a person has to do is read the stories of Indians burning the prairie to encourage new grass (good for the buffalo but not so nice for the bunnies and snakes that get trapped) or driving herds of buffalo over cliffs (kind of hard to use every bit of a few hundred buffalo before they rot in the summer sun) to realize that all the stuff about “respect for mother earth” is a bunch of hot air.
