Duke University, Three Lacrosse Players Announce Settlement
Duke U. ^ | 06/18/07

Posted on 06/18/2007 12:19:13 PM PDT by Sleeping Freeper

Durham, NC -- On Monday, Duke University leaders announced they have reached a settlement with David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann. Below are statements about the settlement.

STATEMENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE PRESIDENT OF DUKE UNIVERSITY:

This has been an extraordinary year for Duke students David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann, who were accused of serious crimes they did not commit. In April, after a thorough review, the North Carolina Attorney General declared that they were innocent of all charges and that the charges never should have been brought. We welcomed their exoneration and deeply regret the difficult year they and their families have had to endure. They conducted themselves with great dignity during their long ordeal.

These young men and their families have been the subject of intense scrutiny that has taken a heavy toll. The Board of Trustees and the President have also determined that it is in the best interests of the Duke community to eliminate the possibility of future litigation and move forward. For these reasons, and after considerable deliberation, the trustees have agreed to a settlement with each student. Beyond this statement, the resolution is a private matter among the students, their families and Duke.

This past year has been hard for many people who care about Duke -– for students, faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends –- and for the three students and their families most of all. We resolve to bring the Duke family together again, and to work to protect others from similar injustices in the criminal justice system in the future.

Understood - However, the crime was public; brought with public dollars.

But the settlement is with a private entity.

But the accusations were meant to indite [sic] all white middle-class young men. Therefore society is also a victim of this outrage

I hear what you're saying but it's free speech - I can take out an ad that says "I hate black midgets". If I libel somebody who's damaged, then that person can sue me.

Do you realize that your "society is a victim" reasoning is precisely the tool liberals use for most of their policies, which drives us conservatives up a wall? I don't think we want to adopt this argument for ourselves.

Puke on Duke. Their lawyer(s) should get no more than 33%, leaving enough to go back to college at a better school...if they want...

So, what's it called when you score a big goal in Lacrosse?

You’re right. With the people who raped these players’ good names, the only thing that matters is paying them off. I, too, don’t see a true apology, and they deserve that in spades. I hope the families got a BUNDLE from the university. Too bad they can’t get back the time that has been wasted.

“I certainly wouldn’t expect an apology from the Gang of 88...”

I would have demanded it in writing for the whole world to see.

How true....these young men showed more dignity than the gang of 88...I think these young men will do quite well in life.

The most memorible remark made was after the DNA results came in exonerating the players, the families were at their wits end, and they finally formulated a plan, one reporter put a microphone in the face of the mother of one of the players and asked if she had anything to say to Mr.Nifong. She said, and I quote, "Mr.Nifong, you messed with the wrong family." It was not a threat, but a declaration of her determination to protect her child, like a mother grizzley. And, sure enough, she is being proved right.

Too bad part of the settlement wasn’t the firing of that pinhead Brodhead.

Maybe not. While the three appear to be happy with the settlement, they cannot divulge the terms of the settlement which very likely will allow the 88 Duke Dummies and Dick Broadhead to escape any personal liability for their statements. In short, the university and the alumni are taking the hit for the know-it-all snobs who proved not to be as clairvoyant as they professed.

How about "Mr. Nifong, you messed with a rich family"

What about the other players? They were damaged too. Maybe one of them can sue Duke and the Gang of 88.

I'm betting this is all insurance money.

I think they (Duke University) did it to save the Gang of 88. I’m not a lawyer but I can’t see this totally getting them out of this fire. Lawyers please kick in your opinion. I’m a doctor and a scientist, I see the world in a different way. So, tell us, can they be raked over the civil lawsuit coals?

So, what's it called when you score a big goal in Lacrosse?

Never mind...it's just called scoring a "goal"...

Nevertheless, it was a brilliant Fast Break by the 3 Mid-fielders, after losing the Face-Off in the Defensive Clearing Area, they deftly pulled off a Wrap Check, using their Crosse to Stick Duke & regain the offense, pass to their Attackmen, Breach Duke's Crease & score a GOAL...1st of several to come, hopefully!!

Congratulations, men...

So, it seems we must be content with a settlement, and compensation, since Justice appears to be no longer available in America, at any price...

...I can take out an ad that says "I hate black midgets"...

That is an opinion and not an accusation. If, however, you say black midgets are rapists you have engaged in not just a form of libel but of a false accusation.

...Do you realize that your "society is a victim" reasoning is precisely the tool liberals use for most of their policies...

Don't throw away the baby with the bath water - just because liberals abuse something doesn't make it bad. We used to put to death the murder and rapist - that certainly didn't benefit the victim much, but it was a deterrent to others and kept murders and rapist from doing it again. Murder and rape destroy a society!

The Old Testament legal remedy for male homosexual perversions was stoning. It kept them from recruiting others to their perversions and infecting the morals of society. In short it was because it was a crime against society, nature and nature's law (as given by nature's creator).

Further, what happened at Duke was a liberal lynching. It was a public abuse by public institutions against the students and the public. If the punishment for such a public crime is not public - no real deterrent will be applied, surely the result will be greater frequency of such abuses in the future.

Yes, crimes ham society which is why we have public prosecutors. The authorities are perfectly free to prosecute ciminally Nifong and the "88" and Crystal Magnum for crimes, and perhaps this will happen

However, your complaint about the privacy of the students' deal with Duke on their civil matter is understandable but it's a different animal.

America doesn’t need confirmation. We have “unnamed sources”:’)

I have it on authority from an unnamed source that each of the players will receive a $100 gift certificate from the Duke University Book Store and a 20% discount on their graduate program tuition.
