Duke University, Three Lacrosse Players Announce Settlement
Duke U. ^ | 06/18/07

Posted on 06/18/2007 12:19:13 PM PDT by Sleeping Freeper

Durham, NC -- On Monday, Duke University leaders announced they have reached a settlement with David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann. Below are statements about the settlement.

STATEMENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE PRESIDENT OF DUKE UNIVERSITY:

This has been an extraordinary year for Duke students David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann, who were accused of serious crimes they did not commit. In April, after a thorough review, the North Carolina Attorney General declared that they were innocent of all charges and that the charges never should have been brought. We welcomed their exoneration and deeply regret the difficult year they and their families have had to endure. They conducted themselves with great dignity during their long ordeal.

These young men and their families have been the subject of intense scrutiny that has taken a heavy toll. The Board of Trustees and the President have also determined that it is in the best interests of the Duke community to eliminate the possibility of future litigation and move forward. For these reasons, and after considerable deliberation, the trustees have agreed to a settlement with each student. Beyond this statement, the resolution is a private matter among the students, their families and Duke.

This past year has been hard for many people who care about Duke -– for students, faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends –- and for the three students and their families most of all. We resolve to bring the Duke family together again, and to work to protect others from similar injustices in the criminal justice system in the future.

Really sorry to see this settlement.

The "gang of 88", the Duke professors who took out full page ads condemning these young men should have had their socks sued off. This left wing nut academics have been getting away with this sort of tactics for too many years.

Man, the curiosity is killing me. Think they got enough to cover legal fees and taxes?

Now that the university has reached a settlement, Nifong has been getting the downpayment of his acts, the 88 must be feeling distinctly alone.

I don’t think they’ll go after the tramp. That way they’ll maintain the highroad.

The statement appears to me to put the 88 out of reach for litigation. Just a guess, but I wouldn't doubt that this was THE major worry of Duke University in settling this out of court. I hope the three LaCrosse players got a healthy pound of flesh.

Sad that the 88 elitist leftists in the faculty will never be held accountable....but it looks that way.

“...rogue prosecutor concerned only with winning an election...”

Sounds like a description of each member of the US Congress.

I don’t know if this settlement covers the 88 faculty, but I don’t blame the three players if, after having Nifong disbarred and receiving a large settlement from Duke, they just want to move on from their lives. None of them live in North Carolina and a lawsuit can take years for little gain- I doubt that any of these professors are worth any real money.

I assume they can still sue the faculty members individually.

“It is good news for the players but bad news in that the university id paying the damages done by the 88. “

The university admin did its share of damage. I thought that some admin actions, such as suspending the lax season and firing Pressler, made MUCH stronger impressions on the general public than the rambling rantings of the 88. And of course Nifong is really the one who did by far the most damage.

We all want to see elitist leftists held accountable for their behaviors,

but that is the CORE of “liberalism” - that they will NEVER be held accountable.

I don’t see anything in here about the Duke professors. All this seems to be is a settlement to head off any litigation against the university itself. Sure, the players could agree that this settlement also covers the 88 professors, but the university does not have the authority to settle personal suits against the professors.

are we positive the other one was in fact a female? she/he had kind of a “she/he” quality about him/her.

Dick Brodhead should now resign, along with the faculty group of 88.

That quote was from one of the students, not the university.

The accusations were public, the humiliation was public why is the settlement private?

I would like to see the humiliation of the Duke 88, the Prez of Duke, the race baiting press and NiFong publicly. Anything less seems to underplay how public the accusation were.

“I assume they can still sue the faculty members individually.”

If I were in their shoes, I’d hope I’d just be able to take my bundle from Duke and move on with life. Suing the faculty members individually could eat up years of your life, much more time than the original travesty.

To the parents of all our other students who are not on scholarships, there will be a slight increase in tuition next year :)

Collin Finnerty Dad was just on Glenn Beck (before this announcement) and stated they would not go after the 88. He brushed off their behavior by stating they were reacting to Nifong. I thought he was too forgiving, well I think they got the 88 via this settlement. Somehow Duke will take care of the 88.....
